According to an unofficial list of pre-draft activity in Miami, NFLDraftScout.com learned the Dolphins have been busy, with at least 37 player visits, including eight wide receivers.
Teams are allowed a total of 30 visits, not including local prospects, and there's the rub.
Thanks to all the talent-laden colleges in Florida, the Dolphins had at least a dozen players visit who went to college in-state, as it were.
And, based on input from several teams, the definition and accounting for who is "local" apparently is pliable. Wait until commissioner Roger Goodell hears about this. Another investigation will surely follow and a mandate will go out to deflate such an anti-competitive practice.
Our list also includes workouts, when the team sends coaches and scouts to the player's campus. But the Dolphins apparently had, or reported, only one, with Tyeler Davison, a defensive tackle from Fresno State, which is California, on the other side of the country. And, with no team in Los Angeles yet, it is probably not local to any NFL team.
Along with the eight wide receivers, who are targeted to fill a need, the Dolphins visited with seven pass-rush prospects, seven defensive backs and five offensive linemen, that last group being the team's primary area of need.
Watching who accepts a request for a visit or workout might hint what player or players the team is inclined to draft. Or not. But it is an interesting part of the whole draft evaluation process.
These ongoing get-togethers are not the only time that coaches and scouts get face time with prospects. Teams also visit players at all-star games, the combine, and during pro days.
But we are not counting those.
Take a closer look this unofficial list of meetings and perhaps there is a clue to which player or players they may draft.

In list of visits below, PV=Private visit; LOC=local prospect; WO=Workout.
DOLPHINS NEEDS IN DRAFT
1. Guard: Right now, Dallas Thomas and Billy Turner are being counted on as starters. Mike Pouncey is moving back to center, and Shelley Smith was released. The Dolphins have big problems on this front. It'll almost certainly be addressed in the draft and free agency. Realistically, Miami has to assume it is looking for starters and reserves. Thomas and Turner aren't reliable, returnee Sam Brenner is so-so, and there's question as to whether center J.D. Walton, signed from the New York Giants, will try to play guard.
Offensive lineman visits: 5, no workouts
--Ali Marpet, G/OT, Hobart (PV)
--Tre' Jackson, G, Florida State (PV)
--La'el Collins, OT, LSU (PV)
--Jake Fisher, OT, Oregon (PV) --Ereck Flowers, OT, Miami (PV)

Interesting that we didn't visit everyone's favorite Mike LB, Kendricks. Also alot of TEs on there. Wouldn't mind O'Leary late. Seems like a good red zone guy

Hoops feels like Kendricks is a shoe in 4-3 MIKE . . . and I can buy that . . . I mean the guy was a tackle machine at UCLA and shows good instincts and coverage ability. However, he is smaller and many, if not most teams feel he is better suited in that Jelani Jenkins role as the WILL in a 4-3.

I'd love him at 47, and I'd put him right in the middle and let him go to work behind Suh. 14 is rich though, too rich for me . . . and I like the MLB prospects that could potentially available at 47. Some real thumpers which would help bring some attitude along with Suh to this defense. It can't be measured in stats . . . but I think attitude was clearly missing on this defense last year and when Delmas went down, we just fell apart.

On one hand it could mean nothing. We had little to no contact with Landry last year (though we did spend a lot of time with Beckam). At the same time, it is my belief that Kendricks is not THAT much higher than the other lbs and again based on our defense, other LBs make sense

And not to take away from Kendricks who is a solid prospect, but if you watch his tape you see a lot of him not being touched. That UCLA defense has a lot of talent on it. Kendricks was a big part of it, don't get me wrong, but how much was him being awesome and how much was him just needing to make an easy play?

Also see that the list is missing a few players but based on LB and CBs visiting it's pretty obvious what type of player we are looking for at those positions

an awful lot of i hope not on that list

I thought that too...it's a bit confusing that they're interviewing guys that just don't fit. I'm getting worried that Tannenbaum is making the selections and it won't take him long to destroy what little this franchise has.

i'd have to look at last years list to see what was on there when hickey did very well the first 2 days...but yeah there's some mistakes in the making there for sure...of course we only have 2 first 2 day picks right now

you may be right on this tannebaum thing...clown shoes calling the draft shots...don't blame you for being worried

you got any thoughts on jarvis harrison at guard??? i havent looked

the one thing i see on that list is the oline guys minus fisher and marpet aren't pure zone scheme guys...they brought in guys with some pop in their hands and pile movers...tre jackson flowers laell collins...even if they sacrificed some athleticism and lateral athlete...i'd have to think if thats the case laken tomlinson would be very high on their board

some of these guys though may just be so clean don't need to meet with them....thats my hope anyways...checked all the boxes off and so no need

Haven't gotten around to it. Trying to get my matrix updated so I can post it this week for others to download.

Most of the O-lineman from Texas A&M are pretty athletic but they're more finesse than power historically. Cedric Ogbuehi comes to mind and he's making a climb on the boards from early in the draft season. Was in the 100's and now he's in the mid 50's.

There aren't many pure zone scheme fits in this draft. If we're lucky we'll land a guy like Marshall Yanda who maybe wasn't the most athletic guy, had a little pop despite being called a finesse player and has taken (at least last year) well to the ZBS.

FH would hate this but I wouldn't be upset at all if they took Brandon Scherff and Laken Tomlinson in the first two rounds.

LT Albert
LG Scherff
C Pouncey
RG Tomlinson
RT James

This is an extremely unpopular move, but Miami has to block Marcel Darreus, Kyle Williams, Muhmmad Wilkerson, and Sheldon Richardson if they want to finish higher than 4th place. If they trot out Billy Turner and Dallas Thomas at guard they will get swept by the Bills and Jets. Might as well build the OL and let them play and grow together.

Billy Turner isn't getting manhandled by anyone. Dude has a great work ethic and is a nasty run blocker.
