According to an unofficial list of pre-draft activity in Miami, NFLDraftScout.com learned the Dolphins have been busy, with at least 37 player visits, including eight wide receivers.
Teams are allowed a total of 30 visits, not including local prospects, and there's the rub.
Thanks to all the talent-laden colleges in Florida, the Dolphins had at least a dozen players visit who went to college in-state, as it were.
And, based on input from several teams, the definition and accounting for who is "local" apparently is pliable. Wait until commissioner Roger Goodell hears about this. Another investigation will surely follow and a mandate will go out to deflate such an anti-competitive practice.
Our list also includes workouts, when the team sends coaches and scouts to the player's campus. But the Dolphins apparently had, or reported, only one, with Tyeler Davison, a defensive tackle from Fresno State, which is California, on the other side of the country. And, with no team in Los Angeles yet, it is probably not local to any NFL team.
Along with the eight wide receivers, who are targeted to fill a need, the Dolphins visited with seven pass-rush prospects, seven defensive backs and five offensive linemen, that last group being the team's primary area of need.
Watching who accepts a request for a visit or workout might hint what player or players the team is inclined to draft. Or not. But it is an interesting part of the whole draft evaluation process.
These ongoing get-togethers are not the only time that coaches and scouts get face time with prospects. Teams also visit players at all-star games, the combine, and during pro days.
But we are not counting those.
Take a closer look this unofficial list of meetings and perhaps there is a clue to which player or players they may draft.

In list of visits below, PV=Private visit; LOC=local prospect; WO=Workout.
DOLPHINS NEEDS IN DRAFT
1. Guard: Right now, Dallas Thomas and Billy Turner are being counted on as starters. Mike Pouncey is moving back to center, and Shelley Smith was released. The Dolphins have big problems on this front. It'll almost certainly be addressed in the draft and free agency. Realistically, Miami has to assume it is looking for starters and reserves. Thomas and Turner aren't reliable, returnee Sam Brenner is so-so, and there's question as to whether center J.D. Walton, signed from the New York Giants, will try to play guard.
Offensive lineman visits: 5, no workouts
--Ali Marpet, G/OT, Hobart (PV)
--Tre' Jackson, G, Florida State (PV)
--La'el Collins, OT, LSU (PV)
--Jake Fisher, OT, Oregon (PV) --Ereck Flowers, OT, Miami (PV)
