NFLPA looking into handling of Tua Tagovailoa after QB’s second stint in concussion protocol: Source

The NFL Players Association is looking into the handling of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa after the team placed him in concussion protocol for the second time this season, according to a person who has been briefed on the situation but is not authorized to speak publicly about it. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Coach Mike McDaniel announced the move on Monday, one day after the quarterback played the entirety of a 26-20 home loss to the Packers. McDaniel said Monday it wasn’t clear when Tagovailoa would have suffered a concussion.
  • The union has not yet requested a full-on investigation into the matter, according to the same person who has been briefed on the situation. Officials are waiting to see the details of an incident report, expected later Tuesday, to determine how to proceed.

Tua basically voluntarily got himself into the protocol... If either the NFLPA or NFL start making it a big deal every time something like that happens, players are going to think twice before doing it... Very counter productive imo...

NBP do you think there is any chance the team knew he wasn’t right at halftime and let him go back out? Hard to imagine it but we have to ask. It certainly explains how his game went from all world in the first half to what we saw in the second half. I’d like to think someone on the staff noticed the hit and checked him out?

I agree. Unless they know something we don't nothing shady happened.

Can never say never but the odds on that are very very small imo... And Tua would've had to be in on it, which would've made it highly unlikely that he'd check in the protocol a day later... Wouldnt make sense to me...

My only concern w this kid is the concussion stuff. He’s a franchise QB. I’m not entertaining other options. But, if he has had 3 of these this year that’s a lot and may put his career at risk whether we like it or not. I can’t help though but think Sydney Crosby (I know you’re a hockey guy) when he had all of those concussions in a row but he figured it out and hasn’t really missed time in forever it seems. So there’s always other side of the coin examples too.

I’m upset w McCoach though. I know we don’t agree on the run game - but I feel coach has to provide more balance for Tua be it runs, short passes etc so he’s not exposed so much

Agreed.......although the NFLPA probably feel a "need" to take a look at this, from everything I read the system worked as it should
But yet aj dillion was in protocol after Monday night game and cleared on Wednesday- any need to look into that? Other examples also.

It’s just cause the Cinci scene was so bad but the pick an choose is interesting.

Hey PA why do you not tell your Players they MUST wear the Helmet that is best rated against concussions.

Why do you advocate for players not wearing shells, Q-collars and mouthpieces you know appropriate safety gear.

Why are you not telling your Union to not play through injuries specifically head ones?

YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM NFLPA

Comparing a qb to a hockey player or say a linebacker like Kuechly isn’t a fair comparison. Those guys are taking multiple licks every single game and the amount of undiagnosed concussions those guys have had is most likely not in the same realm as Tua. With that said Tua needs to learn how to fall, change his helmet and possibly borrow Brian cox’s old neck brace to stop that whiplash effect

I leave it up to the players to decide whether they're ok with the risk or not. Football is not good for your health, period. Its up to them to educate themselves on the risk involved and figure if the paycheck is correct compensation. So Im of the mindset that if they're cleared to play, they get to decide if they want to go or not. I dont really care beyond that.
