9) Dolphins: Dan Marino, Bob Griese, Ryan Tannehill

A lot of us who watched pro football in the 1980s don't buy the revisionist historians who place John Elway over Marino. Outside of Montana, Marino was the guy to watch -- Isotoner gloves and all. Griese was generally considered a "game manager," but when asked, he could throw the deep ball and put his team in the best position to win. It's a barren wasteland after those two -- but hey, Tannehill has potential, and put together a fine overall campaign in 2014. He easily bests everyone for the three-spot on our list. Even Jay Fiedler.

Pretty good list of QBs. Some franchises have really sucked. I absolutely agree with their #1 overall trio as well.

I'd rank higher than #9 on Marino alone. And yes, Marino over Elway ALWAYS.

Not a bad list, have some disagreements here and there, but that is just opinion, and for the most part, it's a very fair list.

definitely revisionist history putting Elway over Marino and obviously by people who didn't pay much attention to either while they played.

Elways highest td season was 27. Elway had almost twice the number of seasons that he threw for under 20 tds than over 20 tds. He had only 2 seasons in his whole career he posted a qb rating over 90 and finished with a career qb rating of under 80. He threw for 4000 yards once in his career. I know it was a different time back than for qbs and Elway is a HOFer but Terell Davis and the schemes that coaching staff implemented hold a lot of responsibility how revisionists view Elway

Bob Griese never gets enough respect.

Wait are the Chargers seriously ranked higher? What?

Marino/Fouts and Rivers/Griese and you give that to the Chargers????

Agreed.

For me though the Colts should have been #1. Unitas was better than either Favre or Starr. I mean, one year Vince Lombardi was the coach of an NFL All-Star game and he had Starr and Unitas as his quarterbacks and even he choose Unitas to start. Likewise give me Peyton over Favre and Starr. Rodgers will go down as a great one but it seems clear that Andrew Luck is the next great NFL quarterback and it bears repeating how good Bert Jones was for a while. As the blurb mentions, he was NFL MVP in 1976. Injuries and the Bob Irsay's incompetent ownership killed his legacy but he was probably the best QB in the NFL for a while.

For all of Peyton's accomplishments I don't think I've ever seen a QB who chokes more in the post season than he does. I'm pretty sure he has more "one-and-done" appearances in the playoffs than any other QB. Great in the regular season, awful in the post season. He's brother Eli is the opposite.

I don't buy that sort of analysis and never have. I mean, if you look at the quarterbacks in NFL history with at least 15 playoff starts, the two lowest winning percentages in the group are Dan Marino (.444) followed by Peyton Manning (.458). And to me it's for the same reason -- in the regular season those guys make/made their teams look better than they were, but in the playoffs the more complete teams can expose you if you're one dimensional.

The two highest winning percentages on that same list? Terry Bradshaw. Followed by Troy Aikman. With all due respect to those guys -- especially Aikman -- if you look at the talent they had around them you can see why that is.

ehh i'll take rodgers over andrew luck...for all the love luck gets that guy can miss some throws and throw the ball into coverage...more than the way he's thought of in the media circles especially you'd expect...it's like the guys a god or something

not yet...no one has better ball placement with top level arm than aaron rodgers

I can see the talent argument with Marino but Peyton had Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark for most of his career in Indy. He also had Edgerrin James for a good portion of that. Marino had Clayton and Duper but didn't have a TE as good as Clark and never had a running back as good as James....ever.

Well I'm not sure if that was meant to be a rebuttal to what I was saying because I didn't say Luck was better than Rodgers, only that it looks like he's destined to become the next great one if for no other reason than Rodgers will be 32 by the time the regular season is over.

no i get that...i just think the media hype with luck doesnt quite match the player in some games...he's been really bad in the last 2 postseason losses for indy...games they never had a chance in but the qb played poorly for all the love he gets...it's not like the team let the qb down in those losses

That's fair, and probably accounts for why Peyton had a lot more top level W/L seasons than Marino. But it bears noting that the Colts went 10-6 with Manning and 1-15 without him, whereas the '93 Dolphins went 5-6 without Marino after starting out the season 4-1 before he got hurt.
