On a positive note there have been some nice surprises with a few players so far.
I like the LB Glenn alot - he looks like he has a high motor and makes plays. I really hope he makes the team. I heard alot of talk about Spragan being avg when he was signed - he looks great - he covers alot of ground. I could see Zach, Seau, Spragan, Glenn, and Pope at LB with maybe 1 more for ST as well.

Boston looks scary. If you line up 3 wide with Chambers, Booker, and Boston that is dangerous. I hope we keep some young hungry guys other than the undependable Thompson.

I like Morris at RB - he runs hard. Gordon looks terrible. He is so hesitant all the time. I'd say Ronnie, Ricky, and Morris are a tough 3. Ricky looked good - very quick.

I liked Shaw at DT - he looks tough. I know it's early but I'm sorry - Wright looks terrible. He looks like a boy among men. I saw a couple plays where he actually turned his back once he made contact with the Oline - are you kidding me? It was not a spin move either. It was a - ok you got me now stop blocking me turn. He can't be more than a practice squad option. I cant see the risk of another team picking him up - based on what?

Even though he hasn't done much yet I still like the motor of Roth and think once he gets adjusted to the speed of the game he will be fine. D Bowens looks like he is ready to break out - I really hope he can stay healthy.

Lastly, I disagree with an earlier post - I thought Tillman played well against Jax. He made some good plays. I just think the secondary is going to need time. I do agree we need another DB but they will improve together as a unit.

Oops one more - watching Feeley makes me want to get sick. At some point you just have to cut your loss. Sage has earned the backup job and no way can you have Feely 3rd can you? Thanks Rick for the 2nd and 3rd rd picks you gave up for Feely and Gordon (both 3rd stringers with their former teams at the time) - great trades! Hope the door didn't hit you in the a@# on the way out.

Nice post but I have to disagree with a few things.
You didnt mention Crowder as one of the LB's you want to keep (im assuming it was a mistake though).
Also, you're being too hard on AJ still. Its a brand new offense for him to learn. Frerotte, has been better but not much. Now dont call me an aj lover or anything like that. I agree that right now he has played like the 4th best qb on the roster but there are still a few more games left in preseason.
Ive been saying for a while now that they should start Sage next preseason game and see how he does vs the first team defense and with our first team offense. It cant hurt....and he has earned the chance IMO

It is called potential, that is why he is going to make the team.

I dont believe on being easy on any player at any position. Their professionals. Feeley had the support of every member of this message board practically. All he has to do is start performing and the talk will settle down. But if he gets outplayed by Sage.. then so be it!

Good catch - Sorry I forgot to include Crowder - he has been really good so far. Great draft pick. He's definitely the #4 LB IF Seau is healthy. It's nice to finally have some legit depth at LB.

As for Feeley I tried to stay somewhat positive until this week but he just doesn't have it to be a starter. He stares his receivers down and dumps off so quick. When Gus is in he takes his shots downfield. AJ dumps off so quick he doesn't give the D a chance to have to make a decision where to go and maybe leave a guy open. I like Sage's confidence - IMO there is more upside to giving him a shot then keeping Feeley #2 and having him sulk on the bench if and when the team struggles.

Our tight ends have looked good.....will give us depth behind McMike. :)

Potential has gotten alot of coaches fired and teams nowhere. I'm not at practice and in meetings so I don't claim to see how this kid is doing all the time - I have only seen the 2 games so maybe that's not fair to him but from what he has shown when put on a big stage I don't see potential. I see a kid getting manhandled. Now when I watch Shaw I see potential. He not only hustles but puts up a fight and at times makes plays. I'm hoping this organization is different that in the past and keeps players not potential. I don't think BB has gotten NE to where they are now with just potential. He has kept alot of low rd picks because they have played their butts off.

I put together a list of newcomers yesterday who've impressed me - a couple weren't really surprises.

Josh Shaw
Jason Glenn
Lorenzo Diamond
Maurice Mann
Travis Daniels (not really surprised)
Donnie Spragins (not really surprised)
Channing Crowder (not really surprised)
Brock Berlin

Potential has also made a lot of coaches into big names and helped win a bunch of superbowls.

He has pretty much been exactly what you should be expected from the kid. He was the 5th round in the supplimental draft for a reason

The defense is going to be fine. It is the offense particulary QB play that I am worried about. I hope Fereotte (sp) takes the reigns or Feeley decides to play to his ability at some point THIS preseason. Brock Berlin is a pleasant surprise, but I will not call him a darkhorse just yet. I would like to see him against some 1st and 2nd string competition though.

My bet would be on performance and not potential. How many all world stars do the Patsies have? They have good hard working players that perform.

I disagree with this - a 5th rd pick is a 5th rd pick and there have been alot of good 5th rd picks. In fact I think if I recall we have one on our team that made a pretty good impact early and is still going strong. Wright was rumored as high as a 2nd rd pick before the supplemental. I'm not saying he is a bust BUT the kid had no brains to just maintain the bare minimum academically in a cake walk system so I'm sure so we know his smarts aren't going to carry him. They say he was lazy and by his weight and his shape that would be accurate. He looks like a puppy dog out there while there are guys like Shaw busting their butt and making plays. That's my point. I'd take the hard workers that can get the job done now with upsie because they are young rather than the wild card could strike it rich maybe some day if all the stars aligned guy.
