Dolphins rookie WR Jakeem Grant performed well under spotlight

The early reviews were mixed in training camp.
Undersized rookie Jakeem Grant, who is 5-foot-7, was up and down in practices. The sixth-round pick dropped passes and muffed punts during training camp, and Grant entered Friday’s preseason opener against the New York Giants as somewhat of a wild card.
However, Grant might have produced his first “turning the corner” moment of his NFL career in Miami’s 27-10 victory. When the lights came on, Grant played under the spotlight and led Miami with four receptions for 68 yards and 113 return yards.
Grant played a clean game with no drops and had two plays of 20 yards or longer. It’s the kind of effort that could have the rookie well on his way to earning a role with the Dolphins in the regular season.

Dolphins’ tiny Jakeem Grant looks like he belongs

Jakeem Grant is the all-time leader in receiving yards at Texas Tech, an impressive feat at a school that has produced NFL receivers including Wes Welker and Michael Crabtree. But in this year’s NFL draft, Grant lasted until the sixth round. The reason for that is his size: Grant measured in at just 5-foot-6 and 165 pounds.

But in his preseason debut Friday night against the Giants, Grant looked like he belongs on an NFL field. Grant had four catches for 68 yards and added 60 yards on four punt returns and 53 yards on two kickoff returns before leaving the game with a rib injury.

Dolphins coach Adam Gase said after the game that he’s been excited to see what the speedy Grant can do in live game action.

“I’ve been waiting for this since we drafted him,” Gase said.

Injuries will always be a concern with a player Grant’s size, and there’s no immediate word on how long that rib injury might sideline him. But if he can stay healthy, he can be a big-time player in the NFL.

It's been so long since Miami had a skill player with real explosion and speed that most people aren't sure how to handle it.

It's so shocking to see in a Miami uniform, lol. And apparently he's only on the team because ROSS -- of all people -- saw talent that the others in the organization didn't see. SMH.

Landry. Parker. Grant. Caroo.

Potential great wide out Corp.

Stills is mad lol.

Can't believe how many underrate and under appreciate OUR #1 DEEP THREAT. I don't care if he had a few drops last year, he is 24 and has unlimited potential. Being around guys like Landry and Parker and even Whalen's caliber only makes him better.

What I saw of Stills last year... nah. Easily single covered and a shrinking violet in contested catches. Not a legit threat. Single covered way to many times downfield.

People are hoping that he'll be a different player this year. And that's the only way he is decent -- if he becomes a different player.

Grant is an excellent piece, a type of player that every team needs. He is not necessarily and every down player, but he can be that player that can spark the team with a big play. No doubt he will make the final 53...I remember going and really looking at him when he was drafted and besides is speed and quickness, it was his attitude I loved. Big ass chip on his shouder and seems fueled by the idea that people doubt him (has already taken this up with Omar). Kind of player you like seeing in the NFL and enjoy rooting for.

He's gonna warrant a lot of attention on screens. He's very dangerous there. He's the Darren sproles type that can just turn a 5 yard catch into a 75 yard TD. We've missed that for so long.

A lot of guys have dominant quickness or speed. Grant is that rear breed- dominant speed and quickness both.

Concur. I was thinking (last season) that the phins could use someone similar to Sproles.

Also, its interesting how the phins O sputtered last yr w/o Clay. I hope Duarte can fill that role.
