I would have expected Coach Saban to sign someone at the corner position, but he apparently is comfortable with two converted safties and a player coming back from injury. Eiland and Parker, listed as safties initially, have apparently converted to corners, and Parker has been mentioned recently as improving. Roundtree looked good last year prior to his injury. If he returns to form as Coach Saban recently suggested he was moving to, then he must be ok with these guys. I alway pull for underdogs, and in this case maybe Parker will pan out.

Pfffft!

Be real. Expect Miami to give up the long ball until the defensive backs learn from their mistakes. Saban will interchange these guys all year hoping to camouflage our obvious deficiencies.

I was hoping the Fins would pursue someone like Ty Law, Bobby Taylor, etc. But maybe Saban's just waiting to see how these people do before committing.

I dont know if anyone else did... but I was one that reported that Parker looked very impressive. It might have been just because I didnt expect anything from him... but he was playing well out there and showed good speed and ball skills. Dont get me wrong... he aint gunna start and isnt competing for a starting spot, but his play is making me feel better about the depth of our CBs...

I don't want to see anymore vets added. I'd rather give the rooks a shot to make plays. We are building for the future here and rather than a retread like Taylor or an injured Law who wants obscene amounts of money when he isn't even healthy for one and two is IMO past his prime is a waste. Let's trust in Saban's scheme first. I think once guys get comfortable with it then the guys will fill in nicely. It's not like NE has had all world talent at DB. Troy Brown did play there all the way to the SB. The scheme makes the difference - it will just take time to learn. We are not lining up man to man like in the past and saying cover.

We also might get Will Poole back in about 8 weeks.Next year Poole and Daniels would be like Madison/Surtain.

I tend to agree with your assessment..

I would rather get young guys. I was hoping they might give the kid Ealy from UNLV a shot. Maybe he just wasn't that good.

As I said in an earlier thread, Nick Saban is one of the best secondary coaches in the game. What guys like Eiland, Parker, and Roundtree lack in physical skills at the cornerback position, they will make up for in mental preparation and technique. If New England can win with Earthwind Moreland, Randall Gay, and Troy Brown playing cornerback, then Miami will be fine with Sam Madison, Travis Daniels, Reggie Howard, and any combination of two of thee above.

I wonder if this is also a sign that the days of our nickel corner playing more than our 3rd LB are over.

Nick saban would disagree that we are "rebuilding".

He has some youngster in the wing Shirdonya/Poole so I dont think he is worried about depth so much.... He might ad a vet after cuts or something but its not worth pursueing imo.

How so you know? Did you ask him? I haven't seen him outright deny that we are rebuilding.

That's absolutely right. If Shirdonya is what people says he is, and if Poole can recover, then we should have a number of young CBs that could start. I wouldn't mind letting the young guys get their work in this preseason. If the position is still an obvious weakness after that, we'll nab someone for a year contract just for depth. If there's any part of a team I trust Saban with, it's the secondary.
