I know I saw this on the board a few weeks ago, but Saban as a GM is costing this team games. I like him as a coach, but him as a GM has us bottom 3 teams in the league. There are a handful of mistakes that he's made that if he went in the other direction, we would be a lot further along. There were other mistakes mixed in there, but these ones, I believe, have costed us the most in the win column.
1st mistake: Drafting Ronnie Brown #2 in 2005. I know Ronnie is popular as can be, but he wasn't the right guy for this team.
2nd Mistake: Passing on Braylon Edwards in that same draft. Braylon is the only blue-chip, star player from the top 10 in that draft class.
3rd Mistake: Culpepper over Brees: Hindsight is 20/20, but this choice should've been easier than it was made out to be. Brees is 3 years younger and was playing lights out going into his injury. Culpepper was missing Moss en route to a 6td 12int performance in 2005 before his injury.
4th Mistake: Drafting Jason Allen #16 2006. The guy isn't on the field, and there's a reason.
Here's how I would've done on those same decisions.
1) Drafted Braylon Edwards (or explored the option that was presented to us before our pick by Washington #9, and 2nd and 5th round picks I believe it was)
2) Selected Brees over Culpepper. Brees is a winner and a Class Act. Culpepper has the loveboat and the implosion that lead to him getting traded to Miami for a 2nd round pick.
3) Drafted Moroney or DeAngelo Williams. Moroney is a starting back, not sure about Williams yet. There were also some OL worth trading up for or trading future picks for (Winston Justice, Jean-Giles).
With my scenario we have Drew Brees throwing to a group of WR of Chambers, Edwards, (Welker, Booker, Hagan) That is just crazy. Chambers and Edwards would easily be one of the most exciting duos in football. Moroney then would be our starting RB this year. I garauntee we would be at least 3-3 at this point and still in this race. Again, hindsight is 20/20, but this is how I've thought since Saban came on board.
