Lovie Smith won it, and deservedly so.

Dungy was next with 20½.

Also receiving votes were New England's Bill Belichick (2), and one each for Seattle's Mike Holmgren, Cincinnati's Lewis and the New York Giants' Tom Coughlin.

Oh well. Saban will be coach of the year in 2006! :D

who cares about this useless awards?

only award i want on our team is someone being name super bowl MVP.

thats it

Who cares about any awards really? Its just something to talk about.. And it probably feels nice to get some recognition.

Good point and I don't see how someone can vote BB and not Saban!

You know, if you truly don't care about the awards, then what is the point of responding to the thread and merely saying "Who cares?"

Message boards are about discussion, not going "bah who gives a crap". Posts like that derail threads.

Even just saying "so and so sucks" without quantification, while not a great post, at least advances the thread somewhat and gives you something to respond to.

Belichek? They went from 14-2 to 10-6. Oh, please don't start with the injury B.S. They had an average number of injuries and lost very few "real players" for the season. There big losses were a safety and LT. Big deal. This is just more Pats crap. I can't wait til they get their butts kicked in the playoffs.

Besides, we know that Saban rules so screw these stupid rewards.

Saban didn't get votes unfortunately because it seems to get Coach of the Year, often times your team has to make the playoffs. Saban should have at least received a few votes, I think, because he did something remarkable with the Dolphins.

Let's put it this way--at least Mike Tice didn't get any votes, like Phil Simms (or Boomer Esiason, I forget who) kept saying he should!

How Belichick got any votes over Saban is completely beyond me....but Nick failed to make the playoffs and i guess thats why you dont get the votes. Still though turning a 4-12 team into a 9-7 team who beat some darn good football teams is pretty impressive.

I thought non-playoff coaches who turned their team around drastically sometimes won the award. I didnt expect Saban to win it, but I thought he would get at least a vote or two.

Let's look at some past winners:

2004--Marty Schottenheimer (12-4, lost in opening round)
2003--Bill Belichick (14-2, Super Bowl win)
2002--Andy Reid (12-4, lost in Conference Championship game)
2001--Dick Jauron (13-3, lost in divisional playoffs)
2000--Jim Haslett (10-6, lost in divisional playoffs)
1999--Dick Vermeil (13-3, Super Bowl win)
1998--Dan Reeves (14-2, Super Bowl loss)
1997--Jim Fassel (10-5-1, lost in wild card round)
1996--Dom Capers (12-4, lost in conference championship)
1995--Ray Rhodes (10-6, lost in divisional playoffs)
1994--Bill Parcells (10-6, lost in wild card round)
1993--Dan Reeves (11-5, lost in divisional playoffs)
1992--Bill Cowher (11-5, lost in divisional playoffs)
1991--Wayne Fontes (12-4, lost in conference championship)
1990--Jimmy Johnson (7-9, no playoffs)

So 1990 was the last time a non-playoff coach got the award.

Wow, I guess I was wrong.. That is understandable then.

Should it be that way? Probably not. But such is the way of life with awards.

Jimmy Johnson, how he managed to win it in 90 with a losing record is beyond me. But I think the real reason was because of how truly dreadful the 1-15 Cowboys were in 1989.

coach of the year is nothing but a popularity contest. Haslett got it a like four years ago and now look. whatever.......Saban will get there one day and might not even get recognized because no one loves Miami. Thats who we are. The dirty bunch nobody likes. People are going to hate playing us.

Dick Jauron got one too :)

Funny thing is on that list I posted, 5 of those people have been fired within the past 5 years.
