I'm an eternal optimist, and I am very excited about the direction the Dolphins are taking this season. I know that there are a lot of problems to address and all that, and there are plenty of other threads where that is being addressed.

However, to me it looks like the foundation that is being laid right now will be a solid one. I wanted to put down a few comments on some of the people that Nick has brought to town so far, and how glad I am that he's the coach of this team.

Hudson Houck: What a miracle worker. Our O-Line has gone from being a miserable embarrassment to being the strongest and most consistent part of the whole team (not counting Wes Welker). I hope that Wayne will continue to pay him a lot of money, and that he stays with the dolphins until he decides to retire. Based on performance, he should be the 2nd highest paid person on the staff.

Ronnie Brown: He's a rookie, and he's making some rookie mistakes and all that, but I really believe that we are just seeing the tip of the iceburg right now. When you look at what he brings overall to the team: running skills, blocking and blitz pickup, and receiving skills...I am very glad we took him #2 overall, and I believe he is worth it. One of my favorite things about him are those times like yesterday when the play looks busted, the ball is put in a awkward place, but he has the focus to bring the ball in, and still make a play. As long has he can avoid injury, I think he's going to be huge for us for a long time. Plus, I really like his attitude. A stark difference from someone like PacMan, or even Braylon Edwards.

Channing Crowder: To come in as a rookie into a defense so complicated that many veterans are still having trouble with it, and learn it well enough to start at two different positions....I believe that really says a lot about this guy. He has also made a few mistakes, but he is definitely a player that I am really glad to have on the team. Plus, I really like his attitude also. He's a smart guy, and he seems to have a lot of respect for the veterans, and he's always talking about just wanted to hang around them, and learn, and take advantage of having people like Jr. and Zach to learn form their work ethic. Imagine having another player with the work ethic and attention to detail that Zach has, but who is bigger and faster. That's what I'm looking forward to with Crowder.

Travis Daniels: I don't see people talking about him alot....and to me that is a good thing for a rookie corner. That means that he's not getting thrown at very often, which means he's doing his job. When there's a breakdown in the secondary, or the opponent makes a play in the passing game, you very rarely see Travis as a part of the problem. Instead, you are more likely going to find him keeping his guy out of the play, which is what you want (unless you are baiting people like Deion). Again, a few rookie mistakes...but very few. I think he's the probably best corner we have right now (I know that's not a huge accomplishment considering our other DB's, but still, he's far from being the weak link).

I have really liked Daniels play thus far. He has yet to be really "picked on" during a game. He has his lapses, but he is generally consistent.

A real crime is that everyone is forgetting about Matt Roth. Matt is playing rather well in his limited role. He has been dominant against the run, and is starting to show more of an upfield push. And when you consider the players ahead of him, it's no wonder that he's not starting. With all our other rookies those positions do not have entrenched veterans. For roth to start he would have had to literally rip some ones head off. All the other guys just had to play to their abilities and beat out some scrubs. Think about it

Ronnie- Beat out Travis Mionor, and Sammie morris
Crowder- Beat out Donnie spragan, and Derrick pope
Daniels- Beat out Reggie Howard, Mario Edwards, and Kris richard

Then think about our other guys.

Vickerson- Stuck behind Holliday
Wright- Stuck behind Traylor
Roth- Stuck behind Carter
Alabi- Stuck behind D-mac, and Carey

i'll leave it at that.

Thats optimism for the future.

im satisfied with brown, but he's not the homerun threat i was hoping he would be.

what about the long run aginst kc? the similar one in another game, where he could have gone like 90 yards had he not tweaked his hammy. all this while splitting carries in an offense with no threat to pass.

i think he deserves more credit than that.

Brown has broken some big runs. And he also gets alot of 15 yard carries also. Be patient. He is splitting snaps, and he's a rook. He just needs to learn to go down sometimes to protect the ball.

Good post cookiehead. Good to hear that about Crowder wanting to spend as much time around the vets as possible.

Brown is going to be a great power runner... Bigtime runs are great highlight reel stuff.... but As long as he keeps pounding the balll... making the chains move... and his uncanny ability of making something out of nothing.. I'd be really happy with him.

I just hope this talent evaluation continues this offseason, when a real difference can be made both in FA and the draft! So far, mostly good!

Good post.

To the poster above...how is RB not a home run threat? Perhaps you missed a couple games. He'd probably have double TD's if he wasn't splitting carries with Ricky.

I've stated this many times, but Saban's only had one draft and we allready have four very promising rookies on our team. If he repeats this next April, we will really have something.

Great post. Finally, some coherent analysis on this forum. I've been reading a bunch of cr*p on this board about how terrible Saban is as a coach, how awful Gus is, and how Brown was a bust. Please, stop the insanity.

Saban has done miracles. Compare this team to the one under Wanny and Spielman. The difference is night and day. With the exception of the Cleveland game, Miami has been competitive in every game. Given the talent they have, I would say that is impressive.
How can people say Brown is a bust? The guy has had an immediate impact, and don't forget he is splitting carries. Brown is living up to his billing. Is there any other rookie Rb that is performing better?
Crowder is a gamer. Smart, athletic and intense-perfect qualities for a linebacker.
I too agree with your assessment of Daniels. He doesn't have the greatest athletic abilities, but he plays smart, and he doesn't give up. He's going to help this team for a long time.

Brown is a monster. He is kinda of hitting that rookie wall but that is why Saban kept and wanted Ricky. Ricky will pick up the slack for the rest of the season. Brown is going to be a "great" running back for the dolphins for years to come. This guy breaks so many tackles he is very hard to bring down. He has fumbled a few times. 3-4 times. But I believe each week he is getting better. Pretty soon he will be breaking tackles and running for 30-40 yards at a time. He has had a few runs that after 5 or 6 guys try to tackle him he still almost breaks away from them and just misses huge runs by inches.

Yes, I agree. If you can get at least 4 players out of each draft that are in the league for more than 5-6 years, you've probably had a successful draft.

I'm excited about the future of this club under Saban. Also, remember he's still got a lot of ties to the college football world probably has some idea of who he would like to get next year in the draft considering he's coached against some of them.
