For years, we have hired coaches that come with the tag line "may be a good NFL HC". Enough! For once, lets spend the money and get someone who's already proven that they can win in the NFL. Whether it be Cowher, Gruden, Billick....etc. Get someone who's "proven", don't hire yet another person who's learning on the job.

Cowher & Gruden are not taking this job. A proven coach will not work under Tannenbaum. Let's just hope that Coach Campbell walks the walk and the players follow

Seriously...why would cowher or gruden leave their current gigs? They make alot of money for doing practically nothing

Yes, because "retreads" have been so successful...

Also Billick cost Ross millions by losing to dolphins in 2007. I hear Ross still holds a grudge about that.

and the successful established HC's were never unproven? I would give my left nut for Dan Quinn right now.

Ross' experiments suck, that is on him

Is it selective amnesia that makes people forget coaches like Jimmy Johnson and Dave Wannstedt? Retread head coaches are a dead end in the NFL. Last year, there were an especially high number of "successful retreads" with 4 in the playoffs. The 8 other HC's in the playoffs were first-time hires. This breakdown was identical the year before. The year before that it was 3 retreads and 9 first-time coaches in the playoffs, the year before that it was 2 retreads and 10 first-time head coaches and keep in mind 1 of those retreads year to year is Bill Belichick, so if you look at the sample minus Belichick it's even less impressive. You could do this regression for decades and find a similar pattern.

Look around the league at the quarter mark of the NFL season: Teams coached by retreads like Lovie Smith, Ken Whisenhunt, John Fox, Jeff Fisher, Andy Reid and Jim Caldwell are just awful. Of the undefeated teams in the league the Bengals, Falcons, Packers, Panthers are all coached by first-time head coaches. The 3-1 teams are coached by first-time hires. Hiring Cowher or Gruden would be a bloody disaster, you're just inviting this organization to put a kick me sign on their backs. Billick hasn't been given another opportunity since he was sent packing in Baltimore largely because everyone knew the Raven's front office, Billick's assistants and his historically good defenses were responsible for their success far more than Billick was. Six of Billick's assistants in Baltimore are or were head coaches in the NFL: Marv Lewis, Jack Del Rio, Rex Ryan, Mike Pettine, Mike Smith and Mike Singletary. He was hired with the reputation as an offensive genius, but could never muster even a decent passing offense in his years in Baltimore, relying upon ferocious defenses, a dominant run game and great offensive lines to win. No thanks.

I seriously don't get the infatuation some have with getting a guy with head coaching experience. Most of them are available for a reason that has nothing to do with their personal choice, and the odds of them being successful is not any better than anyone else.

If you are an owner, just surround yourself with good, knowledgeable people to sit in on the interviews and listen to what they have to say. I hope Ross understands after the Philbin fiasco that this isn't like hiring someone to run a regional office and sit behind a desk ... it's not a typical business interview where the guy that appears the most organized is automatically the best person for the position. You are looking for that, but not someone so caught up in it that they are unemotional. You want someone who has connections and will fill his staff with quality assistants, too; not like Philbin who generally seemed to hire guys he was friends with, but someone who might have worked a few places and became acquainted with a number of guys, hopefully up-and-comers, who can accentuate what his vision is.

I tend to believe this now. They see the turmoil with Ross ownership, and they area fat cats. Easy jobs for the money. I think they are off the table for any coaching jobs.

You guys focus too much on the coaches.

If you want to win football games, get great players.

Ross couldn't go outside, not enough time and too distracting.....plus the Roony rule. He was forced to utilize someone inside the organization and evaluate from there. He needs to keep his eyes open, esp in New Orleans and Dallas. Phibin thought it was genius to not have good asst coaches, for job security, however, it led to his demise as he was under-qualified for the job, and needed help

We have to be careful of these hot OC's and DC's and what real impact they have. Rodgers didn't miss a beat with Philbin gone. Philbin over sold his skill set and impact on Rodgers, thus got the job. I want someone, if Campbell doesn't work out, that has his hands in everything. And his impact is tangible and obvious.
