I was born and raised in ft lauderdale and i have been a huge dolphins fan my whole life! but i do have alot of family up in the philly area (big eagle fans), who i was up visiting just this past weekend. I asked them about lito sheperd (since the jets just got him) to see if they thought he was washed up or not, and i loved what i heard! Every single one of them told me how much they couldnt stand him, saying he was soft and was nothing close to a cover corner......sounds like this wasnt as big as a move as the jets are making it out to be.

Next---Today on NFL network they replayed the wildcard game of us vs. the Ravens.....:boohoo:not my fav but i couldnt help but watch. But as i was watching i decided to pay close attention to Bart scott and jim leonard or whatever his name is...in watching their linebacker play i saw 2 guys flying around the field laying the wood and crackin guys over the head, and they were ray lewis and tarrell suggs...Scott was in a play every once and a while but he never created BIG plays on his own (not a game changer)...basically we can call him the 3rd wheel...in the secondary i dont even need to say much about leonard. he is AVERAGE at best...on a good day!

Basically what im getting at is all these offseason moves that the jets made to bolster a "top 5 defense" are nowhere near as intimidating as i had originally thought. At first i couldnt help but be a little concerned being how baltimores D shut us down last year but seeing these guys play makes me realize the J-E-T-S SUCK SUCK SUCK are missing 3 very very important things........ray lewis, ed reed, and haloti ngata! This defense will be the same as lastyear and nothing to worry about. And with their WR getting worse and them taking a step back at the QB position is there really any need for concern? not in my eyes anymore! LETS GO FINS!!!! CANT WAIT FOR '09!!

The jets are the jets and seemingly dont need talent to beat us every year it seems like. But with that being said I have to agree with you in that I am not scared of Lito or Bart. I am much more concerned with who they already had, Kris Jenkins and Pace, Kerry Rhodes, and Revis.

I don't think their problem this year is gonna come from the defensive side of the ball. They are gonna have rookie QB problems, that is gonna be their downfall. And their WRs aren't gonna scare anyone either.

Bart Scott is overrated imo. No idea why people here were wishing he'd sign with us. I haven't watched that Balt game since the day it happened, but I remember Scott missing a few big tackles in the open field.

Well I don't know if the Jets will have a top 5 defense or not but I have a couple of things to say about your post.

Bart Scott gives us an ILB that can actually cover TE's. That was something we were sorely lacking last season. I think that part of his game alone makes him a big upgrade over Barton. I won't speak to the rest of his ability as an ILB other than to say he's clearly a better overall LB than the guy he is replacing. He doesn't need to be a huge playmaker for us, just fill the void that was there when Barton was playing for us.

Leonhard gives us a similar upgrade at safety. We had Elam and Smith platooning out there last season and the both SUCKED in coverage. Leonhard is absolutely better than either of them in coverage which will free up Kerry Rhodes to be a playmaker again. That's my hope anyway, and I think it's a reasonable thing to hope for. Leonhard also takes the burden off of Rhodes having to line other people up in the secondary. He's a pretty good punt returner as well. So again, no Leonhard isn't some great safety, but his skillset should allow Rhodes to be a great playmaking safety.

Sheppard? This guy is a big question mark. He was a very good (all-pro) CB a few years back but clearly hasn't been that guy the last 2 years. He had injuries to deal with and was in the dog house for a contract dispute. He's basically playing for that contract he wanted this year, so he'll be very motivated to do well. IF he can somehow return to the player he once was he's a giagantic upgrade over the BS we had a RCB last season. If he doesn't, then we'll have to hope and pray that Lowery is better in his second season as a pro. Personally I'm not very optimistic on that one, but I know a lot of Jets fans are.

As another poster pointed out we do have a great NT in Kris Jenkins when healthy, a great CB in Revis, and very good players in Rhodes and Pace. The Jets D was pretty damn good last season when Jenkins was healthy, when he hurt his back it went south real quick. I think it will ride on his shoulders again.

Ryan will be calling the D on Sundays so I'm hoping he can scheme some nice pass rushing in. He was a master at that in Baltimore, granted he had some future HOF'rs on that D. Can he do it without them is the $64,000 question.

I think depth is our biggest question mark on the defensive side of the ball.

I really don't have a strong feeling on Lito either way I think he is a gamble which may actually pay off for the Jests.
But, I wouldn't listen to anything eagles fans have to say about former players. Any players that leave the team or play bad are instantly the worst players on earth. While any player joining them are Top 5 in the league. Philly.....worst.....fans....ever.

One of the problems Ryan will face is the coordinator-to-head-coach challenge that seems to dog a lot of coaches, in that the area they were responsible for and did well in as a coordinator turns out to be the challenge area as a head coach. Tony Dungy was a defensive whiz but his offense shone much brighter in Indy (had some good D's though). Cameron's "offense" stunk up the 1-15 Dolphins. Brian Billick was supposed to be an offensive genius but only won consistently with great defense. Is there a reason for this? Micromanaging? Thinking you can get by on your talents (in your strength area) while underestimating the demands of being a head coach? I was amazed last year by Sparano's ability to delegate and supervise, two key head coaching talents.

Oh, and WhiteShoeWillie, thanks for the good Jet take on the changes to their D. Textbook example of a good "opposition" post on another team's board. Realistic, honest, even humble, why still ardently backing your team. Dang.

I'm puzzled by your take on Bart Scott. The Jets new ILB will be earning 27 million in his first three years of his new contract. I would expect a huge playmaker with that investment. Filling a void with $48 million. Questionable.

Scott should be able to cover the TE on his side in a 3-4 defense, that is his responsibility.

As far as Jim Leonard the guy is a blue collar tough nosed S. The guy was a starter on the Ravens D. I can't really question that. Nice pickup.

That does seem to happen all the time with coordinators turned head coaches. You never know until they actually run the show how good they'll be as a head coach. Sometimes it takes getting fired and hired by someone else.

A lot of that probably is just what talent the team they're on has. Dungy got Manning/Harrison and company, Billick got Lewis, Reed and all those guys.

I like the example of Sean Payton though. He was an offensive guy who got the HC job and calls the offense for them. They obviously have a very good offense. He also has the players. I think Rex's situation resembles that a bit in that he will be calling the defense and has some solid players to work with.

Thanks for the kind words btw.

I think you misunderstood my post a little. When I said fill the void I meant the skills Barton was missing. Basically he's better than Barton in every aspect, especially in pass coverage which was a huge downfall for us last season. You're right he should be able to cover a damn TE, Barton sucked at it.

He also brings strong knowledge of the system being implemented which is invaluable, and a big mouth.

Nobody is intimidated by the jests. Their new head coach is a clown and they have a rookie QB. The jets are the ones who should be intimidated by the phins.

ahhh Lito Sheperdis is a good guy to start with so i hope his best playing days are not over...A few years ago he was a very good CB, anyways.

Scott has not slowed down at all and he can play outside or inside and do both very well.

The Jets defense should be better but it will be hard to tell, intell they get good play from their QB, so their defense can rest some.

The Jets will be lucky to be 8-8 at the end of the year and i'm sure most Jets fans know that.So why would anyone be intimidated??

bart scott product of the system, when you play next to suggs, and lewis, come on. thats like if crowder would have left after that year when he played with seau, and zach, he looked that good because he played next to both of those guys

Nice post. Totally agree on Jenkins. When he was healthy last season the Jets D was tough. If he stays healthy I can see them being a Top 5 D. I think a lot of people question the Scott and Leonhard signings because the did not sign here. That's ridiculous. They are both upgrades. I still think you paid way to much for Pace and the book is still out on Gholston.

For the Jets to be sucessful this season they will have to resemble the Ravens SB team because they don't have a lot of talent on the offensive side of the ball with a rookie leading them.

Bart Scott got ROCKED by Ricky Williams in that game.......I do not remember exactly what time within the game it was but i was watching the replay also and had to pick up my jaw after watching Ricky run up the gut and knock Scott to the ground, with an old school Ricky POP!
Man, it took me back to 2002..........ahhh Ricky and Wannstache, those were the days (not)

And i am sure Bess is looking forward to being covered by Leonhard , he burnt him like toast in their previous match ups.

Yeah, but Jets suck
