I've been saying this since before the draft: Besides stabalizing the QB situation, getting another BIG, talented body in the middle, (ala Jamaal Williams, Casey Hampton, Shaun Rogers), was this team's BIGGEST need. I've posted messages to this site several times before concerning the loss of Bowens and Chester two years ago. If they both hadn't been injured, our season would not have gone the way it did. YES, the offense was a mess, but teams ran STRAIGHT at us all year long. On THIS team, we have bodies, and talented veterans: Zgonina, Holliday, Carter, and a few untested young-uns in Vickerson & Evans. But NONE of these is a TRUE run-stopping NT. If Traylor misses any time due to injury, we are in a LOT of trouble defensively. Who will man the nose in a 3-4 alignment? None of these guys has the size to do that effectively. Teams will run STRAIGHT up the gut, and push our smaller d-lineman around. Look around the league: All of the great run-stopping NT's are BIG men: 330 lbs+. I wanted Ngata in the draft more than I've wanted any other player in recent memory. Didn't happen. With the Manny Wright situation now reaching a boiling pt, Evans becomes our back-up NT. He is small and untested. He is a 7th rounder, and needs time to develop. I don't know about the rest of you, but I am REALLY concerned about the state of this defense. The secondary is a BIG question mark, and if Traylor misses time and the guys up front don't hold the line, we're in trouble on several fronts. And good coaching can only go so far when you lack the talent to run your schemes efficiently...

next year weve got rod wright coming in... he is certian to be a beast if he comes back from injury.

I'm sure the Wilkerson signing is imminent. But you gotta figure that both Traylor and Wilkerson will only play this year, leaving a huge hole next year. Hopefully younger players can develop in a year's time, but you never know.
You're right about Ngata, I would've taken him over any of the other players at our position. You need a fairly dominating NT to run the 3-4 well, and he was that type.
As for Manny Wright, I'm not so sure that Saban outright cuts him. Saban might try to steer him into therapy for a year. He's a coach that doesn't strike me as the type to give up on talented guys with emotional issues so easily.

I too was thinking NT with the first pick. Guess the 'value' just wasn't there, but still.

After reading Manny's words, I seriously doubt he's playing for the Phins again. Guessing the FO is asking around as we speak to see if anyone wants him for a conditional pick.

R.Wright, Evans and Fifta have potential, but none of those guys can be counted on to start as the 3-4 NT this year if Traylor goes down for any period of time, which is very possible.

I'm thinking they'll bring in Big Dan or someone else for a look-see soon enough.

Hopefully Big Daddy Wilkinson will sign. Pretty obvious he just did NOT want to go through the heat of Saban's camp in South Florida. He didn't want to go through "Camp Marinelli" the new coach in Detroit - which is why he left Motown.

Lazy? Maybe but I think he's got some pride and the former #1 draft pick wants one last shot at the Playoffs. He was very solid last year for the Lions and would be an excellent backup for Traylor.

Means we'll see more snaps line-up in the 4-3 then 3-4. We have the personnel to do either.

OMG you didn't get the guy YOU wanted in the draft? I just cannot believe Saban & Capers didn't consult you before drafting, or surely you'd have gotten the guy you wanted. :sidelol:

I wouldn't worry too much, we will do ok for the moment. Nick has said out loud that big eaters trump all other players after qb, that he is always looking to upgrade that situation. I am confident he hasn't forgotten that. As for the question marks...by mid season, we will be formidable on defense.

not only that, manny wright was figured in so the biggest need was not defensive tackle. ngata also went 12th overall, to move up from 16th would have probably required giving up the 3rd round pick which was hagan. i would rather have allen at safety (the real biggest need filled) and hagan than ngata

Very true. Also keep in mind that Ngata also had a couple of horrible games last year (Keiper's knock). His great games far outweighed the bad ones, but the fact that he can lay down like that means that we wouldn't have counted on his presence as much as you should for a 12th pick. Balt. is a good fit for him.

I agree whole-heartedly.

Maybe they can develop a NT and groom them to take Traylor's position next year. The last time the Dolphins used a 3 -4 alignment with any regularity they had T.J. Turner play NT, he was not spectacular at it but he did what he was supposed to engage the center and guard and let the inside backers run to the ball.

In looking at the current roster they may have 3 DT's to develop as NT's that are comparable to Traylor in size. Green at 6'2" 320, Vickerson 6'5" 305, and Fifta 6'0" 327. Traylor for the record is listed at 6'2" 337. One is certain they will be learning and playing behind one of the better NT's in the NFL. That kind of tutoring can only enhance their development.
