From a talent standpoint, it's a really uphill battle Sunday, and that starts with Newton. I enjoyed calling him 'Scam Newton' for a while as did many others including the person who authored the moniker, but lately he's been awesome. In his first 2 years, he'd as much to lose you a ballgame as he did to win it, and his failures were often as spectacular as his success. Now, he's taking care of the football and he's just really hard to stop. He's everything that Michael Vick was supposed to be but wasn't. He can make any throw, and can make plays on the run, and his running ability at the QB position is matched only by Michael Vick only on Vick's best days.
Our offense is gonna feel compelled to keep up with Carolina's offense, which will play right into the hands of an emerging powerhouse defense. Luckily for Miami, Panthers are missing a pretty big piece in Charles Johnson. Still, that's tough D to battle when our D will really up against it all day.
Having to cover Smith, LaFell, and Ted Ginn, who's probably never been as dangerous in his whole career as he is now (cuz he's the #3 and the #3 CB of opposing Ds are no match) seems like too tough a task for our secondary, especially if Patterson is constantly on the injured/healthy fence. With Patterson healthy, we might have a shot, but with Carroll at #2 and Stanford at #3? Yikes!
Then there's the fact that DeAngelo Hall is looking as good as he has in years and Olsen really is a top 15 TE...man, I just don't see how we win this game. It's that simple.
Nothing against the Dolphins, but Carolina is just a more well constructed team.
I think that Newton's progress is encouraging in that he's doing this in year 3, so there was definitely room for him to improve from last year and he did improve. It gives solid evidence that Tannehill can probably take his game to another level next season.
You play the games cuz anything can happen, but I don't see, at this time, a scenario where Miami overcomes a pretty good-sized talent deficit.
