Interim Head Coach Dan Campbell said Wednesday McCain would get the start if he has a good week of practice.
The fifth-round pick from Memphis has appeared in every game this season but has yet to make a start. He played 95 of the 96 defensive snaps in the victory against the Philadelphia Eagles Nov. 15, but wasn’t on the field for the first one.
Taylor started the past six games at cornerback opposite Brent Grimes after replacing veteran Brice McCain in the starting lineup.
GROUP EFFORT
The offensive game plan against Baltimore became more of a group effort than it has been all year, with more input from quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
That’s how Campbell described the situation Wednesday when asked why quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor hadn’t been given the title of offensive coordinator when he was selected to replace Bill Lazor as the Dolphins’ play-caller.
“To build this game plan we all had input,” Campbell said. “The staff had input; I had input. Certainly Zac did. That’s just the way that I wanted to make it at this time.”
As for Tannehill, Campbell said the quarterback was more involved for a simple reason.
“I’m a big believer that your quarterback should have some influence on what he likes, doesn’t like, influence on the game plan,” Campbell said. “With that, you’ve got to make sure that it doesn’t go too far and you clutter his head with a bunch of things that slow him down.
“I told him that I want him to come in Mondays and whatever ideas he has, let’s talk about them, we’ll clean it up on Tuesdays, which we did. He’s got ownership in it as well.”
NEW ‘SLAB’ ON THE BLOCK
The Dolphins got their first up-close look Wednesday at new defensive tackle Robert Thomas, and he certainly made an impression on Campbell.
“He’s built like ... looks like a big concrete slab,” Campbell said with a smile. “I went over there to say hi to him and I kind of popped him on the shoulder and he didn’t move at all. He’s stout. He was very active today. He’s a guy that I think will go in there and help us plug the run a little bit.”
The Dolphins signed Thomas, a 6-foot-3, 325-pound first-year player from Arkansas, from the New England Patriots practice squad Tuesday.
Thomas spent time on the Seattle Seahawks practice squad earlier this season after spending most of the 2014 season on the Washington Redskins practice squad.
“Just a great situation,” Thomas said of the opportunity to join the Dolphins. “I’m sorry about the guys being injured, but it’s the game. That’s the game we play. I’ve got to take full advantage of every opportunity I get.”
