There was big news coming out of Jets camp this week when it was announced that Geno Smith would replace Michael Vick as starting quarterback, but it really wasn’t a big deal for the Dolphins’ defensive players.
“Honestly, we can’t get into all that,” cornerback Brent Grimes said. “What we’ve got to do is go out and play football how we’re capable of playing football and play our game no matter who’s the quarterback. They both have things they can do well and we just have to play our game and make the game difficult for them and try to make some plays.”
“They both kind of play the same watching them on tape,” linebacker Jelani Jenkins said. “One is left-handed (Vick), one is right-handed, but they both can run, they both can make plays with their feet and also throw the ball. They both do the zone-read stuff. I don’t think it changes their offense too much with which quarterback (is used). They still pretty much run the same stuff.”
Head Coach Joe Philbin said the switch didn’t come as a surprise.
“We were getting ready for both players obviously,” he said. “I don’t know if either one is a huge, dramatic shift from the other. They have some similar traits. Offensively, the good thing is there’s film on both guys. You can certainly take a look at both of them.”
When Mike Pouncey joined his Dolphins teammates Wednesday to distribute Thanksgiving meals to 500 South Florida families, it marked the second time in less than a week he had done that type of charitable work.
Last Friday, Pouncey rented a private jet to fly to his hometown of Lakeland, where he joined his brother Maurkice to distribute turkeys to families in that region of Central Florida.
After the turkey giveaway, Pouncey hopped back on the plane with Maurkice, who as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers was enjoying his bye weekend, and some friends and returned to South Florida.
“I just feel we’re in positions where we can be able to give back to our community, somewhere that we grew up and made us the people that we are today,” Mike Pouncey said.

Then we go on to the next week. I don’t even know who we play after that. This game is a big one because it’s double-weighted. We need it if we want to go to the playoffs.” — CB Brent Grimes
