Tristan (Hamden, CT): Who is the top-rated OLB right now? I'd select DeMeco Ryans (but I am biased b/c I love 'Bama).

Mel Kiper: Ryans is right up there. Hawk is No. 1. Chad Greenway is three. Hawk, Ryans and Greenway. An underrated LB is Cameron Vaughn from LSU. He could go second or third round.
Interesting. If Vaughn is underrated, Saban would certainly have the inside info on him.

edward, minneapolis: Mel- Where do you see Brodie Croyle going in the draft? Could he be a productive pro starter?

clear.gif
Mel Kiper: He's going to be viewed as a guy where Kyle Orton went. He'll go in the 4-5 area. They lost their starting center, starting receiver. He was up against it over the last two, three weeks of the season. He held up physically. He had some injury problems before this year. He's got the arm. He has the NFL skills.

Mel Kiper: I thought before he could be a 2-3 rounder.

Andrew (Grand Rapids, MI): Hey Mel, Merry Christmas. What position do the Lions need to draft for and who are the possible candidates they might take?

Mel Kiper: Merry Christmas, Andrew and to everybody that has participated in chat all year. Have a safe holiday and travel safely. As far as the Lions, an interesting guy is Jay Cutler from Vanderbilt. Of the other senior QBs, behind Leinart is Cutler. He's the No. 10 player on my senior big board. He'll draw consideration from Detroit, Miami, Arizona.

Also he said that Leinart's grade will end up being better than Carson Palmer or Eli Manning.

Finally, he thinks Vince Young will go top 5-10 this year and if he stayed for his senior year he would go top 2-3.

Looks like Cutler is up to #10 on Kiper's Senior big board.

This is from another Kiper chat today regarding Cutler:

Q: I caught a few Vanderbilt games this year and really liked QB Jay Cutler. I'm a Dolphins fan and would like to see him in Miami. Where do you project him?  Dave, New Jersey

Cutler might even be gone before Miami picks, if you can believe it. Miami right now is going to be in the middle of the draft, and Cutler could be a top-12 pick. He could be an intriguing player for teams like Arizona, Baltimore and Detroit. Several teams that are picking ahead of Miami will be in the market for a quarterback.

Cutler does need to have a good Senior Bowl week. The Senior Bowl is what propelled Philip Rivers into the top of the first round of the 2004 draft and Jason Campbell into a late first-round pick in 2005. If Cutler has a good Senior Bowl week in Mobile, Ala., he could be an early- to mid-first-round pick. He'll probably go a little bit before Miami, but he might be there for the Dolphins.

Miami head coach Nick Saban is well aware of what Cutler is capable of doing from his days as the head coach at LSU.

Boo. I am really starting to like the idea of Cutler going to Miami and taking over by about 2007. It seems as if we are going to miss out on a top QB prospect once again. Last year was not very good for QB's so I didn't mind not getting one. However, this year is different and there are a few talented guys out there. It is too bad that the folks in front of us all seem to need a QB as well.

If only Brady Quinn came out. He would probably be snatched before us but it would mean Cutler may turn out to be available when we pick. Oh well...

*Still no idea why 99% of this board are sold on Cutler*

Hope he has an awful combine and we can take him in the second, where be belongs

I think we can still get Cutler in the middle.

If Young doesnt come out, he could go higher.

Dont forget that some team (probably the Jets) is going to trade for Rivers.

What has Ngata done in college, he had what 3 sacks this season and he is supposed to be great? 3 sacks in college doesnt scare anyone.

Not sure why but Ngata certainly appears to be slipping a bit in the rankings. In October, people were talking about him as a potential top 5 pick. I haven't seen him play, I just keep hearing 345 lbs. and runs fast. Did he have a unproductive 2nd half? Cause I would think with the potential I've been hearing about, had he been dominating, he would still be talked about as a potential top 5?

:sidelol:

thanks for that

anyway, kiper has said what i've said all along. cutler needs a great senior bowl to get drafted as high as some project him to be. an average game could place him around where we pick
