Everyone is flipping out over the cap and the labor issues. A lot of people are assuming that because of our cap issues, we can't sign someone like Brees. I think there are three things the team needs to keep in mind:

1. We were not going to win the Super Bowl this year.
2. Pro Bowl QBs are incredibly hard to acquire.
3. While it is possible to win the Super Bowl without a really good QB, it is rare, and for all intents and purposes, you need to have a top-ten QB to have a realistic shot.

Therefore, no matter how much it hurts in the short term, we need to clear enough cap space so that there is room to acquire Brees (who is only 27 years old, by the way). We can replace the role players next year, but we probably won't have the same opportunity to acquire a proven QB next year. This opportunity comes along rarely, so we need to jump at it now, regardless of the cost.

Brees would be a fool to sign more than a 1 year deal if in fact we do have the money.

I for one am in panic mode.

It's probably alittle bit premature to panic, trust in our team and whatever happens, happens.

Brees is fine with a 1 year contract.

5-6 mil guaranteed + 4 or so in Incentives gets Brees. Black and white.

Finfang: I assume you are saying that because of the supposed uncapped year in 2007, but I don't think the players are counting on that. There is a whole year of negotiating before that happens, regardless of the posturing going on right now. Additionally, I suspect we would see a lockout before we would see an uncapped season. Furthermore, and more importantly for the purposes of this discussion, players don't normally like to sign one year deals because then they can't get a big signing bonus. Signing bonuses are paid up front to the player but pro-rated over many years for cap purposes. If Brees signed a one year deal, then he would only be able to receive a signing bonus of an amount that could fit under a team's cap this year.

Regardless, even if, for the sake of argument, you are right and Brees would only sign a one year deal, then I would still do it. If he doesn't agree to re-sign with us, then we could frachise tag him.

Great idea for a thread. "Its okay, we were not going to the superbowl anyway so there is no reason to be upset about us not being able to acquire a franchise quarterback". Come on dude, we had and still have a good enough shot at the superbowl as any team. Ben Rothlisberger won the Super Bowl with Pitt last year, you can believe the hype if you want but he did not have a great season; at times he was a liability. What you are basicly saying is that oportunities to land a franchise quarterback are slim and we should not be upset about missing out on Brees because we would be extreemly luck to get him in the first place(Is it only me that takes that from this post, because it makes no sence).

I guess my point is that the NFL is the NFL and the teams with the best players do not always win. The Patriots only have two star players and they have been the best team in the NFL the last four years.

Why arent we going to the Super Bowl this year? Anyone can do it. We're no different

Contrary to what this thread says

Alrighty then. I bet none of you can tell me the law firm that handles the league. Hint: that is where Tagliabue & the previous commissioners came from. It is the reason this crap is so complicated. It is probably the reason, along with a healthy dose of blame for Mean Gene Upshaw, we are in our current predicament.

Final Hint: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ & _ _ _ _ _ _ _

and trust Saban is prepared for the worst. I agree with a poster a couple days ago, this situation just made coaching that much more critical to success. Good thing we have one of the best. :dolphins:

I respect your opinion, but I question your faith. The Dolphins can beat any team on any day. We have an excellent team despite the circumstances. Yes the QB issue needs to be addressed, Ferrotte is not the answer, but at what cost. If clearing enough space to give Brees a 10 million dollar a year deal means cutting key players like Zach or Taylor, then I say take our chances elsewhere. Dont get me wrong, I want to get Brees, but he is the BIGGEST free agent at his position, so we need to out bid the other teams unless he comes here for reasons other than the money. I just do not think we should sell the farm to get him.
