Now that Bowens is out...

Now that Bowens is out for at least 3 months, do we try to make a play for another DE?

I pretty much thought our offseason moves were done except maybe a backup LT or upgrading bottom level players. But now I think we have a hole to fill. Bowens was the 3rd DE and 1st backup to each spot, and played frequently in rotation. I know Williams & Burnett have talent, but neither are a starter at this point and in the games we struggled with last year, I thought lack of a pass rush was part of the problem... and with Wally set to be a FA after this year...

I know our cap is tight, but we could probably squeeze out some $$$ by restructuring some contracts and moves like that?

So do we stand pat or try to trade/acquire another DE? Is there anyone still out there?

We may already have him on the team, Lamanzar Williams, who led NFLE in sacks this year, may be able to get a decent look and a chance to make this team..D. Bowens is his own worst enemy, he was slated as the starter last year, broke his hand and Ogun, took over and never looked back. Will DB's injury allown LW to do the same, not start, but become a good enough force to keep DB on the sideline, ala, Ogun.

Yeah I think Lamanzer should make the team now, and I'm glad. Of all the players in Europe he was probably the guy I most wanted to see on the team. I didn't come away from watching the World Bowl all that impressed with Kendall Newson. I think he's a good returner but he needs a LOT of refinement in his receiving game, and the World Bowl was actually one of his better receiving games he caught for like over 100 yards. It was obvious he was their best talent at WR but the Rhein Fire employed a spread formation run-based attack, with Newson often finding himself open due to a numbers game.

Marc Lester and Robert Baker were in a more WR based offense like Norv Turner's, creating all of the offensive opportunities because of the talent and polish both WRs have. If Charlie Rogers looks good on returns, I guess Kendall Newson will have to wait a while before catching on with us. Baker might be ready to bang on the door right now though. And if I prefer Marc Lester, its just because he seemed like the better all-around talent on the field as opposed to Baker. And before some of you guys go off about how Lester just had a good game and Baker didn't come on, please slow down, actually look at the stats, and realize that Lester had numbers just as good as Baker if not better. The Galaxy were Europe's version of the Bills and Lester was Eric Moulds to Baker's Peerless Price. Was Baker more of a homerun hitter deep threat? Absolutely. But Lester was the guy in that offense you get the ball to in order to move the chains, the guy you go to when you need an incredible looking catch. Think Gadsden, taller, with speed to go deep. Hopefully the Ravens let him get through their fingers and we snatch him, but the chances of that happening are virtually nil cuz at most we keep 5 WRs.

Anyway back to Lamanzer. He racked up 10.5 sacks in 6 games and only 4 starts. Nuff said. We won't miss a beat in passrush without D-Bo. We'll miss him on Special Teams, unless Corey Jenkins steps up and becomes a good wedge buster a la Larry Izzo...and basically we ear-marked Jenkins as a Dolphin months prior to the draft because they are absolutely convinced this guy will be an absolute maven on STs.

What we have at DE is currently better than what is available. We still have the best depth at DE in the league without Bowens. We are fine there.

DEs:
Jason Taylor
Wally Ogunleye
Jay Williams
Rob Burnett
Lamanzer Williams

We will be fine at DE.

Not much in FA, but players could become available once cuts start.

And the Bills should know, their team is defintely looking for some help in that department..They're still shakey at DE, even with all the help at LB and Tackle.

Hehe, well it is true though. The Bills DE situation leaves something to be desired. Actually it leaves a lot of things to be desired hehe.

Don't forget about Yeremiah Bell as a strong possibility on ST's to replace D Bo.

PFW's The Way We Hear It

Miami
The loss of DE David Bowens to a torn anterior cruciate ligament isn’t a season killer, but it does create a ripple effect. The nice depth on the defensive line that the Dolphins had is now gone. It screws up the DT rotation, where Bowens and Jermaine Haley stepped in as pass-rush specialists on passing downs last season. Now, Haley is gone via free agency, and Bowens’ injury will keep him watching from the sideline. That leaves Jay Williams and Rob Burnett as the main backups at defensive end. It could get even worse. Bowens’ injury also could have a chain-reaction effect on DE Adewale Ogunleye, who broke out in a big way with 9½ sacks last season and could hold out of training camp, citing an increased importance to the defensive line with Bowens being out. Ogunleye, an exclusive-rights free agent, had yet to sign the Dolphins’ tender ($375,000) at presstime, which has some team observers concerned. The injury also hits Bowens hard in the pocketbook, as his contract was laden with incentives, and he’ll likely be unable to meet those goals even if he returns as early as November, a possibility.

He's overreacting...Thanks for posting it though.

They're not taking into account

We have a young guy by the Name of Lamanzar Williams who tore up NFL europe... Yes he's a rookie with no experience, but the prince suprised everyone last year in preseason, beacuse Bowens got injured.

Haley was a backup Defensive tackle... he was replaced, I mean upgraded with Jeff Zgonina (sp).. No mention of that ..

Tackles Solo Assists Sacks Fum Rec
Jeff Zgonina 28.0 24 9 4 1 NOTE 4 sacks...

He can hold out all year only to be our EFA next year. They have no leverage. If miami gives him a long term deal it's to avoid him becoming a RFA... but with our cap, he's gonna have to settle for the 375,000 with incentives.

I don't think they really thought out and researched this article.
