Now that the combine dust has settled and FA is mostly covered as far as the major players go I figure I can throw up my mock and see what comes of it so here goes. Oh and I don’t predict trades on draft day because they are not a given.
1 Calvin Johnson (Raiders) - Moss to Packers. Al Davis is a his way kind of guy and he likes freakish athletes over 1st round QBs. Johnson is probably the best in the draft so it is no stretch. Davis will grab his QB in the second and fail with him as he usually does.
2. JaMarcus Russell (Lions) - Lions picked up George Foster and although not a left tackle he does strengthen the line to the point that they can go another direction than Joe Thomas. Martz likes the long ball and Russell has the freakish cannon. Kitna is adequate with time to throw, but age and arm is to much to overcome with this pick.
3. Adrian Peterson (Browns) - How long was Jamal Lewis signed for. Yep 1 year deal. He is no longer the back he used to be. There are a lot of good players on the board, but Cleveland was 31st in the run dept last year and need a playmaker there. Peterson can run and catch opening up a whole new dimension for the Brown attack.
4. Jamaal Anderson (Bucs) - The Bucs have a descent to solid oline, picked up a QB in free agency and have two young qbs to back him. Both their pass rushers are 33 this year and they lost their back up DE to the lions in free agency. Where would you go? DE and the best one is Anderson
5. Joe Thomas (Cardinals) – The no brainer of the draft award goes to this pick. None more needs to be said here.
6. Gaines Adams (Redskins) - Their entire d line is shot and they couldn’t sack a QB even if the opposing team only lined up a center to block them all. Adams just fits what they need, plain and simple.
7. Ted Ginn Jr (Vikings) - Not the smartest pick in the world for them as far as a person is concerned, but they have no proven playmakers at WR and they always seem enamored with speed picks so they will go that direction again.
8. Brady Quinn (Texans) - With all the constant hype of Carr going this way and that way even if Houston denies it there has to be some truth to the rumor they are trying to get rid of him and there is no franchise back up behind him. Now here he is.
9. Alan Branch (Dolphins) - Offense Offense Offense yes we need it, but we go defense here. He is a monster in the middle that will take double teams to block and is a true legit nose tackle where ours are aging to the point of extreme at that position. Tell me how do you double team branch, taylor, porter, holliday, thomas, crowder all at once? this eliminated another problem in our secondary as well because the opposing QB will have no time to throw.
10. LaRon Landry (Falcons) - I love this guy as well and although kinda stupid I think he would be worth the dolphins trying to get here with back to back picks. (so where would our weakness on d be again after that lol?) This guy is going to be champ bailey and A Samuels all rolled into one team leader. Falcons fall on a gold mine here at 10 and look out for their secondary.
11. Amobi Okoye (49ers) - It is all about d this offseason and it will continue into the draft. They love young quick and explosive out there and Okoye fits all those categories and with the most possible potential of anyone in the draft at a need position, that is to hard to pass up at 11
12. Leon Hall (Bills) - Clements out. Hall in. Simple math with Hall being the 'best' CB in the draft. I am not a fan of his and will welcome him to our division rivals with open arms :)
13. Charles Johnson (Rams) - Rams did fairly well against the pass but did horrible against the run last year ranking 31st. Although Johnson is a DE with awesome explosion off the edge he is a big body that can clog the running lanes if need be. With no interior dline talent until further down the board this is the smartest pick.
14. Levi Brown (Panthers) - The panthers were semi descent in the passing arena, but poor in the running department. The ‘sliding’ of brown finally stops here and the panthers are happy. They get a potential franchise left tackle and although they are young in that spot, it still needs an upgrade.
15. Lawrence Timmons (Steelers) - Porter out. Timmons in. Simple math again. Has shown to fit very well into a 3-4 pass rushing LB scheme.
16. Marshawn Lynch (Packers) - Green is gone, Morency can't carry the load. Lynch is like a tank with rocket boosters on him when he hits the hole. If he can learn patience, he could become the steal of the draft.
17. Dwayne Jarrett (Jaguars) – They have a semi anemic passing attack and this will help to get it back on track. Jarrett will provide red zone scoring and take pressure off Matt Jones
18. Reggie Nelson (Bengals) – Descent against the run last year, but terrible against the pass. Look for a def upgrade here and although S is not huge for them at the moment, their secondary will get much younger and faster.
19. Sidney Rice (Titans) – Their top 2 wide receivers are gone along with their often injured top tail back. Young has no one to throw to at this point. No where else to go to at this point and Rice is going to be a very good receiver in this league.
20. Paul Posluszny (Giants) – DE play killed the Giants although no fault of their own due to injury. But they should get those guys back healthy this year. So it is off to the LB core where they lost 2 this off season including the disappointing Arrington. Posluzny is a prototypical Coughlin LB
21. Adam Carriker (Broncos) – They played well last year with their ‘Cleveland browns’ line, but they are aging a little and lacked a consistent pass rush. Shannahan loves his DE early and his RB late so look for a DE here and Adam is a very safe pick at 21.
22. Brandon Meriweather (Dallas) – Dallas is just above average all the way around on offense and defense. Their biggest area of need seems to be FS of all the positions. Meriweather is a gifted athlete with character concerns so naturally he is a perfect fit for Dallas here.
23. Chris Houston (Chiefs) - yeah not so much at the CB position. It is a need position for them and also they have their selection of some very good CB prospects at this point. Houston seems to fit KC best after the 4.3 40 so they will go with him.
24. Patrick Willis (Patriots) – Teddy and Mike can’t go on forever and Willis, well at this position I believe he will be the steal of the draft and I don’t want to face him. Damn you patriots, damn you
25. Greg Olson (Jets) – With the addition of Jones the backfield should be solidified. Now with Olson putting up the numbers he did at the combine, he is great value here and will provide the not so strong armed Chad with an underneath legit target opening up the offense.
26. Robert Meachem (Eagles) – After losing stallworth this off season the eagles need to fill that position. A number 2 with the potential to be a number 1 and has burning speed. A 4.39 40 time and good size makes Rob the man here.
27. Aaron Ross (Saints) – Fred Thomas was the Achilles heal of NO this past season with everyone setting their game plan to attack him. That ends with the addition of a tough aggressive corner with outstanding ball skills.
28. Derrelle Revis (Patriots) - Good size and speed with flashes of big play ability. The patriots have been struggling with the injury bug back there the last few years and BB loves his DBs.
29. Jon Beason (Ravens) – The loss of Thomas is to much to overlook in the LB core so they head in that direction. Had Beason run a better 40 time he would have been drafted much higher. He can read defenses and can break down film so he is a solid pick up here.
30. Dwayne Bowe (Chargers) – They are still looking for an answer as to a legit #1 receiver. This late in the draft and a possible one still on the table, I say they take a shot at it.
31. Ben Grubbs (Bears) – With WR and TE the biggest need for them and the top tier of those players gone they go Oline. Grubbs is a big man that will both give grossman more time to pass and let Benson have a little more time in the running dept.
32. Justin Harrell (Colts) – it makes me sad to agree with Mel Kiper, but this is the pick (and looking back I found out he stole some of my other picks to lol). Their run defense was last in the league last year and they need help there bad. He has talent, so long as he comes back from his injury.
