Unless we pull off some blockbuster deal for a #1 wideout (like Boldin) I think we might be finished until the draft. Now everyone can update their mocks based on our signings. We have really plugged some holes in the past week, especially with the signings of our own free agents. Now we are in a position to solidify this team and I have been trying to figure out the plan that the trifecta has up their sleeve. This is what I see in the draft (position wise) without being very specific about naming the actual player selected:
Round 1- I think BP and Co. go with the best available pass rusher here. I know we still need CB and WR among other positions, but based on the way these guys have picked in the past, I think they will want one more guy to get in the QB's face along with Porter and Wake. This will take pressure off the secondary. Possibilities are Cushing (although probably gone), C. Matthews, L. English, or C. Sintim.
Round 2a- This is where we draft the best available WR if either H. Nicks,
Heyward-Bey or K. Britt is still on the board.
Round 2b and Round 3- Draft the two best available CB's on the board. There should be some talent there with these two picks. Maybe a couple of guys like Sean Smith and Domonique Johnson. This will complete the rebuilding of our secondary. I'm still not convinced that we are not planning on starting J. Allen this year to give him one more chance. I could see our staff telling him, "Son, you were a first round pick. Now get off your a** and show me something!"
Round 4- Inside Linebacker- We need to develop someone to take Adele's spot, if not right away, then in the near future. Personally, I like Adele, but we can always try to get better. Jasper Brinkley perhaps?
Round 5-Nose Tackle- Unlike many on this board, I don't look at nose tackle as a PRESSING NEED in 2009. Next year there will be plenty of them to draft, and I don't think Fergie and Soilei are that bad. But if a really strong guy like Terrence Taylor slips down to 5, this would be a good time to grab him for development and depth.
Round 6- no pick
In the 7th, you really have to take the BPA of what's left, but this is what I like:
Round 7a- LB..... I would actually go with more linebacker depth here. Parcells is king at finding those sleepers that others passed over. Perhaps a guy like Lee Robinson from Penn State will still be on the board.
Round 7b- OT.... Offensive Tackle Depth- a guy like Garrett Reynolds from North Carolina comes to mind.
Round 7c- RB.... This is where we might find our version of Darren Sproles. We have power guys in Ricky and Ronnie. Lex Hilliard is built the same way if, God forbid, one of them goes down. And Cobbs is Mr. Do Everything. WE could take a chance on a little guy here who can catch and block. Someone like a Tyrell Sutton from Northwestern.
Just kicking it around a little and trying to be realistic. Just wondering how everyone else's opinions will change after all the signings.
