im sorry if this has already been posted but what is uo with the o - line? culpepper didnt get a good pass against the first team deffensive line of the bucs, and they were missing rice. sure culpepper had a great drive on the 3rd or 4th possesion but lets not forget it was the back up deffense. NO im not saying oh no culpepper sucks and so does the line we are gonna lose all are games, no its not like that i just want to see wat u guys think about this?:dolphins:

They look average to slightly below-average to me. Hopefully they get some cohesion and better individual play at some point. It's the only place on the team (other than the D backfield) where we don't have a pro-bowl caliber player out there setting a high bar.

It may be time to stop thinking Saban can "teach" the DBs into being good, and time to stop thinking Houck can "teach" the O line into being good and just go out and get some good PLAYERS.

Where is he supposed to get the CAP room let alone the players to do that?

I think it is the situation that makes "me" most nervous. Most poeple have overlooked your point that the starters were going out when we finally got our act together. If you put Rice and Brooks back into it, we might still be looking for a first down. A lot of work and only three weeks to get it settled.

O-line issues

 The new guys, LT Shelton and RG Anderson need to understand how important their jobs really are. I'm sure Saban and line coach Houck will get it straightened out. The line showed improvement last year after struggling mightily with false starts. In their defense, they were working on a silent count for away games. I do understand your concern, but don't freak out yet. We'll be OK. GaroDuper

Calm down, remember how the OL looked last pre-season and before that, and how did it look once the season started. Let's don't forget that. Also, the secondary after Surtain left wasn't that bad, it wasn't the best but it wasn't too bad. Let's pay close attention to them since it appears those are our weaknesses, but we can't rule them out so soon. Come on! the secondary and the OL need time, after the season starts then we can say they are no good or whatever...

I don't mean this year, I mean as a long-term philosophy.

The O line hasn't looked "good" since we had Mark Dixon and Jamie Nails and we at least had one side we could run to. This line is adequate, not good. Unfortunately, adequate lines get shellacked against good D-lines, and that's what you face in the playoffs.

Mark my words -- there will be many games this year where Ronnie sputters and Daunte has people in his face all day, and it'll be because of the line.

i think....that we ar going to be ready for the 1st game......i have faith

the problem is bennie anderson ..he was gettin dominated by mcfarland who is an excellent DT and barret ruud was blitzing from his side i think seth mckinney better get back here soon

Keep in mind that in this game Saban decided to use a silent count for the 1st time this preseaso. He wasn't focused on simply winning the game.
That explains a lot of the false starts.
While it's true Tampa had a lot of 2nd string defenders in on DC's TD drive, we also had a lot of 2nd stringers in also.

You're just going to have to get used to it. Shelton has never been very good....he'll need help against speed rushers. Anderson was not so effectionaly named a fat tub of lard for his inability to stay in shape and his distinct lack of quick feet. You just have to hope that they play well enough together to give Daunte a chance.

I do agree about signing someone. The phins should of signed one of the top FA Olinemen over the last few years, whether it be Gandy, Woody, or Kreutz. Granted all were overpaid but a pro-bowl calibre player that can dominate his counterpart would certainly be appreciated.

i agree with u i think we should have taken kevin mawae cause every QB deserves a good center i mean look wat happen when u put dwight stevenson and marino on the field at the same time...MAGIC!

Most of the great OLine players in NFL history were not "great" athletes by their own rights. OLine players are cultivated, not picked.

OLineman are typically mid-to-late round picks. They only become great after time. It's attributed to coaching and putting the right guy in the right system.

In order to get better at some positions, you must be willing to temporarily step backwards. Seth McKinney, while serviceable, had reached his plateau as a center. He was simply playing to best of his ability. He could have refined his technique over the years, but the increase would have only been marginal. Fact was he was undersized and underpowered.

Rex Hadnot is a complete upgrade. But, he needs some time to get up to speed mentally. Once he's completely there, he will be a force for us in the middle.

Many times in the previous games, I've seen the pocket collapse. It's disheartening, but you have to look to see why it's collapsing. An OLine is like a stack of dominoes. If one falls, everyone shifts to compensate, inheritently making every other position weaker to some degree.

One thing I've noticed while the pocket is collapsing in preseason... Culpepper and Harrington have been able to step up to avoid the rush. That tells me that Hadnot is getting a push and is winning the 1-on-1 battle. Last year, AT BEST, Seth could contain his man and stalemate his block. He was not getting a push.

And, honestly, most of our weakness appears to be RG. But, it seems to be mental mistakes. To me, that's an indication of lack of reps and lack of cohesion. That makes sense considering Anderson just got here.

Shelton was brought in because of physical tools. Houck's work last year was noted around the league. And, if you look at our line stats, we have one of the better lines in the league. But, it didn't look it, did it? That was Houck's work. But, he saw the limitations in the line. He knew Seth wasn't the answer at C and McIntosh wasn't the answer at LT. But, I believe he saw Hadnot, James and Carey as the anchors.

You can see in the ground game right now we are getting massive holes and deep penetration on the front lines even against some of the best DLines in the NFL. The Bucs and Jags sport 2 of the best DLines around. And, after watching the games, I honestly felt good about the potential of the line. If you subtract the negatives and see those as coachable improvements, now look at the positives. The wide open holes, the deep penetration, the sustained blocking.... I see a unit that is leaps and bounds ahead of last year's. I feel this line can be the best we've seen since Dan was here. And, I think it will show up in Week 5 or 6. Just about the time the rest of the offense finally gets on the same page.

We won't have this problem next year. The near future of our line is in place. Now, it's time to build chemistry. I honestly feel we finally have made the OLine one of the strengths of our team. And, it's been a long time coming.

I just don't see it. We will be serviceable, and certainly better than last year but we are still going to do a lot of it like last year...at the expense of something else. Last game we didn't start to protect until Tampa's starters started leaving and they were without Brooks and Rice. How badly would they have kicked us around if they HAD been playing. Make no mistake, I want you to be right and I think we WILL be OK, just not dominating. Not a "strength" IMO
