QB-slash-WR
I know, there are tons of these threads already...but I just got through watching the plays on NFL.com, and am feeling the need to vent, albeit constructively.
1.) Wes Welker needs to get more time @ WR. Game plan for this kid, move him inside, move him outside, put him in the backfield behind Frerotte, keep him in motion, run reverses w/ him, etc. Give him more touches. He may not be the fastest on the field, but the kid is a worker...Mismatches can be created for him, especially if they can get him consistently covered by an OLB. Two words: Wayne Chrebet.
2.) Ronnie Brown needs to be the No. 1 guy...use Ricky to spell him and that's it. Give RB about 25 touches a game and Ricky 10 at the most. Ronnie was doing some good running out there w/ some pretty poor blocking. He's making guys miss and he's showing that he's learning every game. Keep feeding it to him. He'll only get better.
3.) Frerotte is holding the ball too long. This may be due to blocking breaking down, but there were several times when he double-clutched the ball and came close to getting sacked. W/ the Phins o-line situation, they need a guy to come in and make split second decisions...or to gameplan in bail-out routes. I'd give Frerotte two more games; if the team doesn't win in that span, start Rosenfels. Sage has a good arm, and it'd be a chance to see what the kid could do. Give Lemon some snaps, so that the QB situation is better known in the offseason.
4.) With guys like Chambers, McMichael, Booker, Welker and Brown on the field all at once, Defenses shouldn't have double coverage on anyone. There's enough talent in this list that to double cover any of them gets you killed by one of the others. Consistently.
5.) The Dolphins really need to get rid of Reggie Howard. The guy's confidence is shot, and he needs to start over somewhere. His situation in Miami has gotten into his head. The guy has talent, I just think he's mentally not there. Ship him out and bring in T-buck. T-buck can bring in the veteran leadership that the CBs need right now as well as big play ability.
6.) I really like this class of rookies. Crowder, Brown, and Daniels all appear to be set to contribute for at least the next three seasons. Roth and the others may contribute more next year. I'm looking forward to seeing what Saban and Mueller can mine out of the '06 draft...
7.) ZT and JT are the heart and soul of the D...they keep fighting, no matter what. If only that could go into the rest of the D. Too many times it seemed like guys just quit fighting out there against the Chiefs. Especially @ the Safety positions. The safeties haven't been getting it done over the last two games.
8.) This team is still better than I figured them to be this year. They may be 2-4, but there have been glimmers of hope. It's going to take time (maybe half way into NEXT season) before we really know how Saban's system works...because right now, there's still a mixture of Saban's regime and Wanny's. And Wanny's was bad enough to taint even the best stuff Saban could put on the field.
That's about it...Thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts, and as always, GO PHINS :D !
