You're right for the most part. But if you're watching evolving game play you should not just be looking out for the weaknesses and whether he is improving on them. You need to be on the look out for strengths and whether they are degrading, and also be on the lookout for new "talents" or "weapons" or whatever you want to call it that can outweigh the weaknesses that are failing to improve.
I'll just answer your questions here. I was just stating to you, that you seemed to think Carey was gonna be a dominate stud tackle, at the Pro Level. When observing Carey at MU, the one thing about Carey, he was always in position, always on his marks. But one thing about the big guy, he would never get after the end. He would get his arms extended, but never really chase the end. He had awesome technique, but not "mad" fever. He lacked the passion. He never finished the guy off.
I look at it this way. I dont think I should have to keep an eye on a guy to see if he is declining. Point being, you take a guy like Courtney Brown, awesome left end. Then you get a dipsheet like Butch Davis, who tryies to put Courtney at right end. Courtney has always played left end, now he is going against what made him special at PSU. Some guys arent ambidextrious. If a coach aint smart enough to notice that, then I dont fault the player.
But, I understand your point. And, I do agree, that is the one thing me and my buddy ***** about too. When we are watching, it is very hard to get a good look at the secondary and WR 's. ESPN does a decent job, better then most, but they like getting to the play late, because of their jiving. None of em do an excellent job, some better then others. But, they all have their faults.
You definately need slow motion. We use a high quality gold VHS on short play, so when pausing, you dont get the filter lines in the screen. Well, I should say, my buddy, he has perfected the process, thats for sure. We get pretty good looks at the plays. He pretty damn smart on players, and has taught me alot. And, yes, by the way, he has coached before. Before I get the snide remarks, "If you know so much, go get a job in the NFL". Funny thing is, people that dont pay attention, think it is such an overwhelming thing to evaluate talent. Far from it, it is pretty simple, once you understand what to look for.
