miami currently has the most rostered players in the nfl at 78. most teams have in the mid 60s. the chargers only have 54.
there were some changes based on the cba to roster sizes, such as gameday roster can be 55 players technically with 2 practice squad players able to be elevated for gameday only then sent back to restore the 53 man limit. and practice squads can now be 12 players.
with that said, miami has 14 picks in the draft. if they make all 14 selections, they would need to cut 2 players just to get under the 90 man roster limit. then that would leave no room for undrafted free agents.
so i think we will see some definite movement on and around draft weekend. its almost a given miami will move around and probably walk away with around 9-10 picks instead of 14. i could see them packaging players as part of their movement around the draft board - like charles harris and a 6th to move up a few spots in the 6th - just spitballing. i am sure there will be cuts immediately after the draft too. and i dont think we will be signing a huge number of ufas like in years past. and while i dont really buy the move up to #1 for burrow, i can definitely see us moving a lot of picks to move up in other rounds. we do have a pretty big gap between our third (#70) and fourth (#141).
even though i dont really have a good feeling about grier's talent evaluation skills, i do commend him for setting the table for a total roster reshape over the past 12 months. here's hoping that flores will have a big impact on who is selected as i feel better about his eye and ability to predict future success.
in looking at the roster, its pretty obvious that we will be drafting tackles (yes plural), a defensive lineman or two, and definitely a running back. i think grier and the team thinks we are pretty set at linebacker and edge, but probably any other position would be up for drafting.
right or wrong this is how i broke it out:
thanks for letting me nerd out :) boring being locked in all day every day so plenty of time to waste on pointless activities like this ha
