Ok, guys. I broke down the film this morning of the colts game. This is what I found........
1. Our corners are playing great football. Our rook S. Smith pretty much shut down Reggie Wayne.
2. The reason Dallas Clark was open was because our defensive Coordinator had no confidence in Smith and provided over the top help for him thus pulling him out of TE coverage leaving Wilson in man coverage on Clark (horrible move)
3. Why are we running quarters coverage on 3rd and 3? Makes no sence. everyone knows that Indy is known for the quick slant to RW. When you run quarters your playing off. (also bad move )
4. Notice the Colts got nothing deep on us because we were playing 2 safeties deep zone and man up front. Yea we got nothing deep on us but, Manning recognized that and threw the dink and dunk passes. When you run two deep your safeties responsible fot the TE's have to play catch up. Its very eaasy to get caught committing your shoulders when playing catch up and breaking hard towards the ball in front of you. Very easy for a semi-athletic TE to make one simple juke and catch you committing to him. Hence the TD to Garcon. Everyone was committing to the intermediate pass, but the pass was short because Manning recognized that we were bringing the house, thus audibling to a dink and dunk pass. He caught us committing, and burned our CB on the short pass. Our secondary was too worried about the deep ball.
5. See our problem is not the abilities of the secondary , or lack there of. After breaking down the film, I came to the conclusion that there was numerous questionable coverage calls throughout the game, which caught us out of position. Our coverage scheme is very vanilla, and Indy knew that. They knew we were worried about the deep ball and took advantage of it. Our problem is out defensive coordinator calling the wrong coverage packages. Paul P. I think needs to be re evaluated, and Miami needs to think about getting a new one this offseason. We need to go spend money on a good hard nosed DC. Someone like Spagnolo. If we had him on our side Monday night, guranteed we wouldnt have gotten gashed by the TE! So, I leave you with this. We have a really good secondary, you just cant see it because we have a bad DC. Thoughts?

Yeah we all know Miami ran a Tampa 2 coverage for most of the game.. But you should pay attention to the defensive front more. This is what I wrote in another thread:

It would be nice if they would disguise their blitzes instead of letting the QB and offensive line know where it's coming from on every snap..

Watch the Steelers and watch Rex Ryan's Jets against Brady on Sunday. They were shifting and moving defensive linemen and linebackers before the snap all game long.. They did a lot of overloads to one side, a lot of stunting and crosses with their defensive linemen, then shooting someone through the cross (X).. They also did a lot of zone blitzes confusing Brady and their offensive line.

The Dolphins don't do any of that. They show their hand way before the snap and never check out of it. They do nothing to confuse the QB or the O-Line.

A prime example of that is the last TD pass to Garcon for 48 yards. The Dolphins loaded the line showing blitz with a bunch of people. Manning easily audibled for a quick screen pass to beat the blitz.. Their O-Linemen went downfield to block becuase there is no use staying on their blocks with a quick pass, and those O-Linemen went to block our safeties so GArcon can easily score a TD.

If we had some imagination and disguising, like running a zone blitz on that play after Manning audibles for the quick pass, maybe you drop back a couple people from the line and get in the way of that pass. At the very least if you dropped back a couple it would get in the way of their O-Linemen going downfield, allowing others to make the tackle for a minimal gain (because they wouldn't have been blocked).

Throughout the entire game the Dolphins showed their hand on the defensive front. Manning and their O-Line knew what was coming on every play. The Dolphins make is very easy for offenses to game plan against us because there is no imagination or creativity on defense at all.

Watch what we did to Brady and the Pats when we shut them out 21-0 in 2006.. We were moving JT all around right before the snap-- he was sometimes on the left, up the middle, sometimes on the right side, confusing Brady and their offensive line. We had linemen moving all around right before the snap, as well as linebackers.. Just like the Jets did to Brady on Sunday.

The Dolphins do none of that. That is the problem.

In this league where everyone copies one another, it's a joke that we don't watch film of other 3-4 defenses like the ravens and steelers last year (and jets this year), who do a lot of disguising and looping, crosses with their d-linemen, and have a lot of movement before the snap to confuse offenses and get them off their timing and rhythm.

We should have Wake activated and keep his explosive first step on the outside. This makes an olineman shoot out and creates a big gap from center to outside of the guard. We should be moving around Porter and taylor all over the place right before the snap, and shooting those gaps.. That's why Justin Smiley looked so horrible against Atlanta, because Abraham's speed made Long switch out, giving a huge area for Smiley to cover.. The Falcons were smart as they used their other d-tackle to slant to the opposite side of the center, leaving Smiley in no man's land.

That's confusion.. The Dolphins do no slanting, no looping, no double shooting, no setups to create a hole on an offensive line to shoot through.. All they do is go man-on-man, and that makes it so easy for offensive lines to read, and makes it very easy to play against.

The Dolphins have all these young talented defensive lineman, and pass rushers at LB like Wake, Porter and Taylor, and they don't know how to use them.

The Dolphins defense this year is so easy to read for QB's and offensive lines. The Dolphins ranked 4th on defense in 2006 because Saban had those guys up front on defense shifting and moving around confusing offenses, getting them off their timing and rhythm.. Many times Saban would have two guys shooting through one gap, but instead this stupid Pasqualoni just goes man on man.

We have this schmuck pasqualoni who doesn't do any of that. That's why we suck. It all starts up front.. He has no imagination or defensive creativity at all when it comes to setting up and offensive line for the pass rush on a play-to-play basis.

Rex Ryan gets it.

We have more pass rushers than the Jets do with Calvin Pace out, yet Ryan gets so much more out of his defensive front with all their pre snap shifting and movements. Along with setting up offensive lines to create holes for people to shoot through the QB. They do so much to thwart off an offensive line with their disguises and overloads, shifting, slanting, looping, stunts etc etc etc.

They shut down the #3 offense from last year and destroyed the Texans offensive line in week one. And then look what they did to the Pats.. What's frustrating is that there is no reason why we can't do the same with our young talent on the D-Line, and all our pass rushers at OLB.

We don't move around anyone. We do nothing to confuse or thwart an offensive line.. Opposing offensive lines know what's coming, and who's coming from where, on every snap.

It's like showing your hand when you play poker. You will lose every time.... The Dolphins always show their hand.

Rex Ryan knows how to play Poker. So does Dick LeBeau of the Steelers... Because showing your hand before every play is stupid.

You all may hate Nick Saban, but he is a good poker player too, and knows how to run a defense putting people in places to succeed. Remember in 2006 how much movement we had on our defensive front ? We had so many stunts going on up there. That's why we ranked 4th on defense that year, and led the league in sacks.

Coincidence ? I think not.

One of the big advantages in having a 3-4 defense is it allows you to disguise really well. And it allows you to run so many more variations up front on pre and post snap.... And the Dolphins don't even use that big advantage. Watch the Steelers 3-4 defense with all their disguises, the Ravens 3-4 defense with all their disguises last year, and the Jets who are embarrassing offenses this year with their 3-4 disguising up front.... That why offenses are so off in their timing and rhythm when teams play them..

The Dolphins however, HELP opposing offenses have timing and rhythm with their bland vanilla scheme.. Which isn't really a scheme, because it's so basic and simple for offenses to pick up... And pick up fast.

Pasqualoni is useless.

Rex Ryan really gets it man.. That confusion up front allowed the Jets defensive backs to play closer up in tight coverage. Because their D-backs knew the ball had to come out in 2.5 seconds, allowing them to take more chances.

I mean, even Strickland (their 3rd CB), and Lito Sheppard looked like superstars because of what they did up front.

The Texans had the 3rd ranked offense last year.. And the Jets made them look like a high school offense, because of all the whacky crazy things they did up front.. It ALL STARTS UP FRONT !! And it was beautiful to watch.. And it works it's way back allowing their d-backs to play tight and take more chances knowing the ball must come out in 2.5 seconds.

And all that confusion makes O-Linemen miss blocks, and makes QB's throw errant passes...

Even when they faked the blitzes and didn't send more than 4 people later in the game, they were getting through causing the offense to make mistakes (missed blocks and errant passes) !! Because the O-linemen and QB were tentative and rattled from all the crazy stuff from earlier in the game..

THAT'S HOW YOU THROW AN OFFENSE OFF IT'S TIMING AND RHYTHM !!!

That's all part of the setup plan to throw offenses off kilter.

Dick LeBeau, Nick Saban, Rex Ryan, they all know this... That's how you shorten a field.. It's no wonder that out of Brady's 50 passes on Sunday, he only attempted to throw for 2 over 20 yards (one was incomplete, the other was intercepted)... Because that ball had to come out fast, and against tight coverage.

That's what you call attacking an offense... Making an offense make mistakes...And destroying their timing and rhythm.

It shouldn't surprise you.. Because the Dolphins defense under Saban did it to Brady and the Pats in 2006 when we shut them out 21-0. That's how you beat elite QB's and elite passing attacks like Peyton Manning. And what we should have done A LOT more of on Monday night.

E verything thing you said is correct, this team runs everything very basic and vanilla even the wild cat iit's either ronnie taking it up the middle or handing it to ricky....elementry stuff ! I have a feeling thats why jason allen is not at safety cause he dosent have the secondary calls down, because he is a good tackler and from what ive seen from wilson id take jason allen over him any day.

I really think if we did the crazy shifts and packages up front like Rex Ryan does, it would make everyone in the secondary so much better-- including Wilson... Like I said, crappy secondary players like Strickland and Sheppard have looked like super stars for the Jets.. When you know the ball must come out in 2.5 seconds, and you don't have to cover long, most secondary players can look amazing.

People in NY were scared to death of Lito Sheppard, because he looked HORRIBLE in pre season.. And he had the worst metric scores of any corner in the NFL last year.. Sheppard was dead last.... Then when the season started and Rex Ryan blew the doors off with his schemes up front, he looked great. That's not a coincidence.

When you're not getting a consistent pass rush, and have to cover for 4 and 5 seconds here and there between plays, then it makes players in the secondary more tentative and unsure of themselves... Making mistakes in the process.

Once a secondary gains a lot of confidence in the pass rush, there are like totally different players on the field. Playing with a much higher level of confidence, and a higher level of production...

Rex Ryan has done an amazing job of that in NY... He's got that whole defense playing with great confidence, because of all the whacky stuff he does up front with all the twists, overloads, zone blitzes, stunts, shifting, movement of players in the 3-4 front pre snap, etc etc etc etc.

Coaching is all about putting players in the best position to succeed. And Rex Ryan gets it when it comes to coaching defense, and playcalling a defense.

It pains me to say that as I hate the Jets.

Greyboy you are right on the dot. i don't understand how no reporters never ask tony why Pasqualoni use this retarded scheme. Hell when has this system ever work. Do you guys remember fins play the ravens and how Joe had all day to throw? The whole offensive line knew exactly what dolphins d was going to do.

our defense couldn't even figure out how to cover Wilford as a tight end. true story.

Yeah we all know Miami ran a Tampa 2 coverage for most of the game.. But you should pay attention to the defensive front more. This is what I wrote in another thread:
I was paying attention to the seconday only, thank you sir.

Best post I've read on here in a while. I dont get it, you know Peyton likes to audible based on his pre-snap read, so why not disguise the **** out of your defense?? I trust that our coaches will put our players in the best situation for them to succeed but I agree that was not the case on monday night

The defensive game plan was horrible. I watched it again yesterday and our game plan looked like it was manufactured by a Colt coach (for them to win), not by our staff.
