Once upon a time there was a formation that I just couldn't get enough of. Whether I was watching games or playing in them. I was fascinated with its flexibility, functionality, and flash.

There was this guy I used to watch play, and when he ran that shotgun offense, you just KNEW something magic was going to happen. Heck, even listening on the radio, when you heard "...is back in the shotgun..." made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up with anticipation.

From the fan's perspective, the shotgun represented the formation that ALL your best players could be on the field at once, so many that an opposing defense just couldn't cover them all. And you just KNEW, we would be moving that ball down field. You KNEW IT!

When I played, I loved the extra time it game me to throw, I loved the options it gave me, and I loved the vantage point you got standing back off the O-line, it made things ALOT easier to see. Naturally, there were drawbacks, namely, not having anyone available to pick up blitzers, but if you were smart, you could see them coming and burn them by hitting the guy left open....

Of course, I wasn't anywhere near as good at running it as that guy I used to watch on TV.....But damn, I just couldn't get enough of it.

Well friends, I never thought I'd say this but....I'm ****ING SICK OF THE SHOTGUN! Or maybe I should call it the LAZORGUN.

So farewell old friend, my first formational infatuation from the football field.

Thank you Mr. Lazor, for destroying something I once held so near and dear to my heart. Thank you for defiling my fondness of the shotgun. You actually transformed those warm fuzzies I felt when I heard "...in the shotgun..." into a nauseating disgust for those words.

Farewell my love.....

It's not Bill Lazor. It's a trend around the NFL. NFL offensive coordinators are fascinated with the shotgun and are using it a lot more, even though there's a mountain of evidence indicating that it's counterproductive. By and large, NFL quarterbacks perform less efficiently (as measured by passer rating) when they are in the shotgun as opposed to under center. This is not even debatable. There was a Wall Street Journal article about it recently (I'm sure you can google it) that was pretty damning and picks apart just how stupid and stubborn NFL 'offensive gurus' are when it comes to actually doing what works best.

It is almost time for teams to switch back to the power running game. You can see outlines of it happening already don't write that fullback position off just yet, I have a feeling he will be back pretty soon.
