This is not a gus bashing thread, but I do take the position that he is a short timer maybe 2 years tops. I thought it interesting to see who the serious off season contenders would be for the qb derby that is likely to occur. I have examined the qbs of all teams and come up with what I believe are the contenders for the Rivers/lienart sweepstakes.
Teams excluded. (They may draft lienart but imo would trade if they had a chance to pickup Lienart)
San Fran-Smith
Green bay-Farve and Rodgers
bengals-Palmer
steelers-Roethlesberger
Chargers-Brees
Patsies-Brady
Falcons-Vick and Schaub
Giants-Manning
Colts-Manning
eagles-Mcnabb
vikings-culpepper
Teams unlikely (have a young qb that has potential and/or unlikely to spend the money)

Rams-Bulger and Fitzpatrick
Redskins-Brunell-campbell
seahawks-Hasselback and Greene
Panthers-Delomhe and Lefors
Bears-Orton and Grossman
Titans-Mc nair and Volek
Raiders-Collins and Walters
Broncos-Plummer and Van Pelt
Bills-Holcomb and Loseman
Jags-Leftwich and Garrard
Teams that have a young qb with potential but no decent veteran(possible teams in the qb derby)
Ravens-Boller is a waste but not sure if Ravens have excepted that. Ravens are a running team and therefore I don't see them as a serious contender for a high priced qb.
Texans-They are so weak at the 0-line that it would not be fair to Carr to downgrade him at this point. Look for Texans to use money and picks for lineman.
Browns-They are high on Charlie Frye and have Dilfer keeping his seat warm for him. Don't see the Browns as a contender here although even with Fyre they are thin at qb. (Derek Anderson rookie only other qb than Dilfer and Fyre)
Saints-Brooks who is on his last starting season imo but Mcpherson is in the waiting and will likely get a shot next year at the starting qb. Saints are to cheap and in a state of disarray that I don't see them as serious contenders here although they should be.
Chiefs-Green is solid but his backup Huard so even though they need a young qb imo they are not at the point they would spend the money as green seems to have the job held pretty tight.

Serious Qb derby contenders IMO!!!!!!
Miami-Gus Rosenfels and Aj and 25 million in cap space.
Jets-Penningtons injury is not as bad as originally thought but he is so injury prone and having a second rotar cuff surgury in less than 2 years makes the jets in desperate need of a qb. I mean they have Testaverde playing end of analysis.
Cowboys-Bledsoe and parcells seem to be hitting it off in Dallas but Bledsoe's age and Jerry Jones $ look for Dallas to take a shot at Rivers and or Lienart.
Lions-Herrington has got that team so down on the qb position that they have to be considered contenders. They love Orlovsky there but with herrington out and Garcia in the backup role consider the lions serious contenders.
contenders Miami-Cowboys-Jets-lions

My prediction is Miami is couching itself in cap space for a run at one off the two top off season qbs. See Mueller's approach in New Orleans as he did the same cap clearing moves when they brought in bulger, delomhe, brooks in Muleller's first year.

i would put the redskins in with the fins, cowboys, and jets. i must admit, i thought there would be more teams wanting qbs. i guess not.

imo, the fins need to get a good qb next year if they are going to make a super bowl run with this defense. if not, than the fins are at least 5 years away from contention

First off thanks for doing this work up, it took some time. I think I would throw is the Ravens and Saints as being in the hunt as well. The Saints will run out of patience with Brooks at some point and might try to draft a Qb depending on what they think of Adrian McPherson. The Ravens may well have a new head coach as well as a real shot at the first pick in the draft, the new HC might decide the best move would be to draft a replacment for Boller.
If either the Texans or the Niners end up with the first pick then let the biding begin. If that happens I dont see us giving up what it would take to be real players in that conversation. NOTE on the Texans-I dont have a link but I read somewhere yesterday that the owner of the Texans said he has every intention of keeping Carr and that he is the future of the franchise.

The redskins already traded away next years no. 1 for Campell. I dont see them drafting another qb.

good post, I just want them to have a good draft, Draft players to play not to warm the bench! this is in reference to wanny past draft.

Very good post. I also thought there would be a lot more teams looking for Qb help.
If there are only 4 teams that are desperate for qb's then let see:
1. The Jets are commited to Penninghton because of all the money invested in him.
2. Lions appear to really like Orlovsky, and may look to fill another need area first.
That leaves us and the cowboys as serious contenders for one of these 2 guys.

Good post....but I am not sold on the Vikings though. I would trade Culpepper in a heartbeat if i had a chance to pick up Lienart, I could easily get a 2nd and 3rd for him.

The Redskins love Campbell! Gonna take a change in coaching staff for them to look at a Qb.

well jason campbell is terrible and has no shot in the NFL, so they might as well take another QB

Yeah, you are right! That is why they traded a first round pick and moved up into the first round to draft him. Because he is terrible and has no shot in the NFL. :shakeno:

that's also why the chargers traded up to get ryan leaf with the 2nd overall pick in the 98 draft, right? don't look at the what the redskins did to get him, look at film of campbell and watch him play. and his terrible mechanics and accuracy, etc....

I'm sure they did look at film before they drafted him and then decided to trade up and get him.

Was your comment that the Redskins should be included among those likely to seek a QB (the point of the thread) or was it an off topic comment about your opinion of Campbell?
