I know the opinions here will be biased. I'm sure mine is but I had a long discussion/argument with a bunch of my Patriots friends on Facebook last night that started as Manning vs. Brady. Obviously all the Pats fans say Brady is better than Manning and say he's the best QB of all time. Myself and a couple others said it's clear cut Manning is better than Brady. I also believe if Manning gets his 2nd ring then the media and general fans will call Manning the GOAT. The ONLY argument they used for Brady was rings. Nothing else.

Then it turned to Marino talk and them bashing the no rings argument over and over. It's the most pathetic argument I've ever heard about Marino. The amount he did with less talent around him than all the other top QB's ever is amazing. 48 TD's and 5,084 yards stood for over 20 years. Look at the top 10 lists of best QB season stats and 1984 sticks out like a sore thumb with all the other years in the past decade. They all laughed when I said he would have a 6,000 yard season with 70 TD's playing today. I think if Manning wins it this year it will be tough not to call him the best ever though.

I know this topic is and has been debated to death and it's tough to compare different era QB's but Patriot fans are just painful to discuss it with.

Marino was before his time. He was the best passing QB before the nfl turned the league into a pass happy league where you can't touch anyone on offense. Marino would put up ridiculous numbers today.

Is this a serious question? Of course it's Dan.

I always look at the discussion like this- you are given an NFL franchise and can pick whatever QB in history/present that you want to build around, who do you pick? It is arguable and will most likely depend upon your perspective but I would take Marino every time, he was the total package as a passing qb and he did not miss out on super bowl rings through any fault of his own.

I love Marino as much as the next Dolphins fan but I think if you look back at his career and the lack of success in the playoffs, I realize its a team sport but he really cannot be considered the greatest. We only made the AFC Championship twice I believe under him. Whereas Brady and Manning have made it various times and have each won a championship. I know we like to harp on how he never had much help, but tell me the help that Brady has had en route to 8 AFC Title games? We constantly came up short in the playoffs in his prime and that has to be attributed somewhat to him no?

I just thank God that he allowed me to watch Danny Marino play quarterback. Best of all time is just a matter of opinion. There is never and can never be a best of all time. No one can argue that Dan Marino was one of the best quarterbacks ever. It is easier to judge basketball players by the number of rings their teams have. In football it doesn't make sense. That would mean Joe Flacco, Trent Dilfer, Mark Rypien, Joe Theismann, Brad Johnson, and Jeff Hostetler were as good or better than Peyton Manning because they have a ring, and better than Marino. Too many moving parts in football.

They changed the rules to make passing the way to play. Plain and simple if marinos 84 team was on the field this season he would have thrown for 7000 yards.

One of the best? Absolutely? The Best? I don't think so IMO. There will never be an undisputed GOAT NFL QB, it's too much of a team oriented game. However, if there truly was a QB better than the rest, it would take a historically bad supporting cast for him to not at least win a single chip, and Dan's Dolphins weren't THAT bad. He is a hall of famer for a reason, but the best...?

I have him in my top 5, you can rank them in any order.

Montana
Brady
Unitas
Graham
Marino

I judge whether I think they had enough talent to win SBs. For example Peyton Manning. I am so critical of him b/c I believe he has played on SB caliber teams the majority of his career and only has 1 title(as of today), I think he should have 3 or 4 by now.

Marino's best team was 1984 but they lost to an all time great team in SF- no shame in that. He never really played w/ a SB caliber roster after that, he elevated average talent to postseasons in most years. If he was on the Colts/Broncos like Peyton he'd have enough rings to fill up one hand.

Marino never won a ring, but if he played on a Dolphins team that was even somewhat consistently good at defense, it would have been tough for any team to beat him. With todays rules in the NFL, it would be called unfair to allow Marino to work with the same rules.

Marino is the only QB I have ever seen throw passes to receivers with defenders all around him (We are talking 3 or 4 players to the one receiver), the window was microscopic...literally no room for error, put it EXACTLY where it needs to be, or risk at best a near INT, at worst pick 6, and he rarely failed.

I'd have a tough time arguing against that list. Developing a list is such a hard thing to do. How do you leave QBs like Tarkenton, Staubach, Young, and Elway off? And if you replace one on your list, how do you justify leaving that person off?

All around QB.......Best pure Passer
..Montana..................Marino
..Marino....................Manning
..Manning..................Unitas
..Unitas.....................Graham

I think Young is vastly overrated so it was easy to keep him off. I think Peyton is working his way into the discussion. if he plays well again next week and does again next postseason- I didn't say win SBs but if he's playing well giving his team a chance that changes things for me b/c far too often he didn't pay well and that is why his team lost so much.

It's very difficult to separate, we all have our opinions and we should have fun debating it. cases can be made for a ton of different guys. I have my top 5 b/c:

Montana- won TWO SBs pre-Jerry Rice, helped change culture of a franchise. 4 SBs w/ 11 Tds and ZERO INTs. Handed keys to dynasty to Steve Young and they only won one more after he left.
Unitas-won 2 NFL titles pre SB years and then won a SB, 4 time MVP, still top 15 all time in pass yds and top 10 in TD passes.
Graham- not a QB the way we judge QBs today, played in a very different era but was ultimate leader and winner. won 7 championships in 10 seasons, 7 time 1st team all pro in 10 seasons.
Brady- 5 SB apps, 3 title, rescued floundering franchise and turned them into a dynasty. look at BB's record w/ and w/o Brady.
Marino- scariest opposing QB I have probably ever seen(close w/ Brady). never out of a game, made average talent into playoff caliber teams.
