Off Topic: The rugby-style "Hawk tackle"

As co-chair of the NFL Player Safety Advisory Panel, Hall of Fame coach John Madden knew something had to be done about players leading with their helmeted heads when tackling.

But what?

From Madden’s inquisitive mind to Pete Carroll’s proven method of teaching players how to tackle – and then some – that are featured in an instructional video.

“The video is excellent,” Madden said Monday during a telephone interview. “We’ve been looking for something like that for a long time. One of the things the Commissioner is trying to do is take the head out of football when it comes to tackling, not using the head for contact.

“So we’re working on that and the question was: OK, if we take the head out, what do we put in? And Pete came up with this video. It’s not only good, it’s great. When I first looked at it, it was beyond what I thought it could have been and it was as close to perfect as it could be.”

Very compelling....I would like to see all team switch to this

I played rugby for years, I imagine all the pads and **** can make tackling a pain in the NFL

This is just fundamental tackling. It was how I was taught from pee-wee through high school. It amazes me how many NFL and even major college teams have such pool tackling technique.

Make it obligatory to wrap up with the arms, as with rugby, and you get rid of a lot of pointless injuries.

For those that know MMA like I do, this is a basic takedown technique. It's basically a running double leg takedown. Buckle the backs of the knees with your hands or a clench and it's nearly impossible not to go down. I don't understand why this isn't taught more in football.

looks good to me... implement that ****. It's basic though... wrap up. bring them down.
