Over the last several years we have heard balance talked about by our previous head coach very often. To him it meant that we run the same number or plays on the ground as in the air, 30 runs 30 passes. However what is important in the NFL is not to actually have balance, it is to have the THREAT of balance. The best example of this that I can think of was the Colts last year. They had the most feared aerial attack in the league and yet when defensive coordinators talked about defending the Colts the first word out of their mouth was Edgerrin James. The reason that offense was so effective was that on any given play you had no idea whether it was a run or a pass. (This was of course helped by the great play fakes) Defenses FEARED both the run or the pass on any given play. This is what made them so good last year. They didn’t necessarily have a balanced offense in terms of the number of runs vs. passes in a given game but defenses had to play them for both the whole time. The reason I bring this up is that last night someone commented that Scott seams very pass happy which we aren’t very used to. I think this is partly due to having a young rb and an offensive line that at this point is better in pass protection than in run blocking. However when he was in Minnesota in 2003 the Vikings had were the number 4 rushing team in the league. The year Ricky won the rushing title they were ranked first. Last year they were only ranked 18 which worries me a little but I think that was partially due to the great year that Dante had. Overall I think Scott wants an offence that can be explosive in both phases of the game and I think we will see the play calling reflect that more and more as both the line and Ronnie come along.

Comments? Also have you been happy with the play calling? I have only got to see the last part of the first game so I cant do much but look at stats. A fan from Minnesota was saying that he hadn’t been very happy with some of the calls when he was there so I would love to get some thoughts.

I've actually been really happy with the play calling. I think our team is a lot more fun to watch than last year, and where with Wanny I could pretty much always predict what we'd do, this year it's not nearly as predictable.

ive heard that linehans system is to set up the run with the pass instead of vice versa... by establishing a verticle passing threat you open up a lot of running room...

but also they will go with what works, the running game wasn't working against the broncos, but the passing game was... why keep trying to force the run to balance out the play calling in a situation like that? as long as what we are running leads to victories im all for it...

The one thing I've noticed that hasn't changed is when its like 3 and 5 from their 15 or less and we take a shot at the endzone. Why oh why don't we just go for the 1st down. I think our chances to get a TD exponetionally increase with a fresh set of downs. Am I crazy?

That's also what I've heard. Stretch the defence out with some long attempts so they don't keep eight men in the box.

Ricky will eat that alive. :D Ronnie too before long.
