I'm writing an offensive line analysis for every NFL team. I'm looking for information on the Dolphins offensive line such as the :
-Projected 2008 starters
-Little blurb on each starter and the top backups (better at pass or run blocking, strong, agile, good or bad 2007 season)
-Best guys on the line
-Weak links on the line (if any)
-Why could the line be better in 2008?
-Why could the line be worse in 2008?

I'm basically looking for any information and would really appreciate if you could help me out.

Thanks very much,
Phil

LT - Jake Long: Dominant run blocker and good pass blocker. First pick in the 2008 NFL Draft and if he hadn't been taken #1 would have been selected at #2 because he is truly a special talent. I'm sure you can find plenty of info on him. ;)

LG - Justin Smiley: Very good pulling guard who is best suited to be the RG for Miami as they pull left and run off of Jake Long. Unfotunately, Miami has a 2nd year center and the veteran Smiley will likely play LG to avoid putting 2 rookies next to one another. Smiley is an average pass blocker, but exceptional run blocker who was injured for almost all of 2007. But, in 2006 he was the linchpin of a line that blew open huge running lanes for Frank Gore in San Francisco. He is exceptionally agile and plays with power, but he is a better run blocker than pass protector.

C - Samson Satele: He was a 2nd round choice of Miami in 2007 draft and the first rookie starting center in recent memory for the Dolphins. He has an exceptional punch and is a very good mirrorer in pass protection. He excels at reaching the 2nd level and finding his target in space. He has the potential to follow in the footsteps of former Dolphin great Dwight Stevenson, who was probably the best center in NFL history. Satele certainly isn't there yet, but he has a lot of ability and was very good on a poor Dolphin line in 2007. He far outplayed the more heralded Ryan Kalil of USC who was selected 1 pick ahead of Satele.

RG - Shawn Murphy?: This spot is wide open, and definitely the weak link for the Dolphins in 2008. Eventually Justin Smiley will be moved to RG, but not in 2008. New Head Coach Tony Sparano is a former OL coach who is quite high on Murphy--son of the Atlanta Braves' Major League Baseball MVP Dale Murphy--who transferred to Utah State as a DL and switched to the OL late in his career, but is 320 lbs. and agile for his size. If it's not Murphy, whom the Dolphins traded up in the 4th round to select, then it will likely either be 2007 7th rounder Drew Mormino who lacks bulk and strength, or 2008 6th rounder Donald Thomas who is very quick and strong in the upper body but also raw and weak in the lower body. If the Dolphins make a late trade or FA acquisition, it will be to fill this final position on the line. Ultimately, Justin Smiley will probably play RG, but until this final position is competently manned, Smiley will have to help out rookie LT Jake Long and 2nd year C Samson Satele by playing LG.

RT - Vernon Carey: Vernon played LT last season and if I recall correctly only allowed 3.5 sacks, which was quite respectable. But, he allowed a lot of hurries and our QB fumbled the ball several times as well. We didn't have as many offensive plays as many other teams either since we stunk. But, Carey, who is a solid run blocker and mediocre pass protector, acquitted himself as servicable at LT. The selection of Jake Long means Vernon Carey can move back to RT where he was quite successful in 2006, meriting much consideration for the Pro Bowl for his overall play. He could concentrate on his run blocking, which is quite good, and he generally didn't face elite speed pass rushers playing RT; and when he did the QB could see them coming and get the ball away.

All in all, we only kept 2 OL guys from our weak 2007 line, RT Vernon Carey and rookie C Samson Satele. Carey was out of position at LT in 2007, but will be a stalwart RT this year as he was back in 2006. Satele had a very very strong rookie season, and he is expected to build upon that and become one of the best young C's in the league. Top pick Jake Long is expected to be an extremely good player--the consensus best OT in a draft that is being called the best OT draft in memory. Those 3 are all top notch players. Justin Smiley is now healthy, and is considered one of the best run blocking pulling guards in the league. His weakness is pass protection, so we'll see how he fares this season now that he's finally healthy again. That last spot, probably RG because we need to play the veteran Smiley at LG to avoid putting 2 rookies next to one another, is the only question mark on the line.

Our depth is non-existant. We're rebuilding the line from the bottom up with draft picks. Our new Head Coach Tony Sparano, along with our new VP Bill Parcells and our new GM Ireland, built the Dallas Cowboys OL the same way. They are doing it again in Miami, and we should have a very good OL starting in 2008.

As for better or worse in 2008, there's simply no comparison, we've upgraded at every single position. Vernon Carey was a subpar LT but a good RT, so by switching him to RT we instantly get better at RT. Jake Long is a huge upgrade at LT. Justin Smiley is better than any G we had at any point in 2007. Samson Satele returns as our starter at C, but he was a rookie last year and he's a 2nd year player this season, so we naturally expect progression.

Hope this helps. If it does, thank me, lol. ;)

Thanks a ton man, you just made my job a lot easier :D
I'll write the article tomorrow morning and post it here for those interested. If you want to PM me your full name I can add it to the bottom of my article with a link to this board (which I will do either way).

Looks like we have a great run blocking offensive line this season but is pass protection a concern at all?

Looks like we have a great run blocking offensive line this season but is pass protection a concern at all?

It is definitely a concern since Long supposedly is weak against speed rusher and Smiley is more of a mauler.

My real concern is that we have no depth, especially at OT. How bad w/we be with Julius Wilson as the starting RT and Carey back at LT

Digital , that was an excellent write up - thanks for the good read.

I love this forum for the threads/posts such as that. Talking football with knowledgeable people.

pass protection sometimes comes with time tho run blocking takes time as well....when you trow the ball the QB can help you out by getting rid of the football quickly but on run blocking everyone needs to be on the same page....our o-line will have more talent this year but it takes time for an o-line to gel....I'm hoping that after a few weeks our o-line will be playing real good.

Ozzy rules!!

I don't think it is. From the amount of draft picks spent on the OL and DL I expect that we're going to be running the ball the majority of the time and using the run to set up the pass. I think we're going to be running a very conservative ball control offensive. We're going to concentrate on time of possession and not making mistakes. Pass protection while still important will not be as much of a necessity as it is in say the West Coast offense.

My surpirse at RG will be Donald Thomas. The dude has a ton of strength. He will be a bulldozer. Thats what this team is looking for. We will be running draws on 3rd and five and screens and such. Dont worry too much about pass protection.

Here is my article. Feel free to post any comments or suggestions:
2008 Projected Starters:
Left Tackle:
Jake Long
Left Guard: Shawn Murphy / Drew Mormino / Donald Thomas
Center:
Samson Satele
Right Guard: Justin Smiley
Right Tackle: Vernon Carey

2007 Injuries:
G Drew Mormino: All season

Overview:
The 2007 season was a disastrous one for the Miami Dolphins and as a result Cam Cameron was fired after only one season as the head coach. It all started when, to everyone’s surprise, the Dolphins selected Ted Ginn instead of Brady Quinn in the 2007 NFL Draft. The Dolphins won only one game but things should turn around this season with newly hired Bill Parcells as the VP of Football Operations. Parcells hired Tony Sparano as head coach and has made numerous changes to the offensive line for the 2008 season.

The Dolphins selected Jake Long with the first overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft and there is no doubt that he will be the starting left tackle on opening day. Long is very strong and has a very large wingspan at 6’7” and 315 lbs. He is an excellent run blocker because of his strength and intensity. His aggressiveness which serves him well most of the time will however occasionally play against him when opposed to more experienced defensive linemen. Long will however have to improve his technique as a pass protector and find ways to make up for his lack of agility and slower feet. There is no doubt that Long was the right selection for the Dolphins and he will be the anchor of this offensive line for years to come. On the other side will be Vernon Carey, the Dolphins first round pick in 2004. Carey played left tackle in 2007 and did an adequate job but he is much better on the right side where he played in 2006. He is a big body at 6’5” and 335 lbs who, like Long, is an excellent run blocker. The downside with him is that he lacks agility and has very slow feet so struggled in pass protection against the top defensive ends in the NFL. Now that he is being moved back to the right side, Carey will look much better as a pass blocker and will be able to focus on his run blocking.

The Dolphins also improved at guard in the off-season by signing Justin Smiley from the 49ers to a five-year deal. Smiley is quite athletic for a guard and has the ability to pull to the outside in order to block. He is pretty strong and has quick feet but lacks technique in pass protection and will get overpowered at times. Smiley is a very good run blocker and an average pass protector, a nice upgrade for this line. Smiley is a natural at right guard but could be moved to left guard in order to have a veteran presence beside the rookie Long. The other guard spot will be the weak link of this offensive line and will be a competition between three players. The leader for the job is 2007 fourth round pick Shawn Murphy, a very strong guard at 6’4” and 320 lbs. He is a smart player with excellent work ethic so he will improve rapidly but his technique and footwork are very lacking for the moment. He is expected to compete with 2007 sixth round pick Drew Mormino and 2008 sixth round pick Donald Thomas. Mormino spent the entire 2007 season on the injured reserve because of a shoulder injury. He is big and strong which makes him a decent run blocker but doesn’t have the agility to block to the outside or to adjust in pass protection. Thomas could surprise many because he is very strong and agile for a lineman but has limited experience. It will be an interesting battle to follow in training camp but there is no doubt that this will be the weak spot of this line.

The center position is much clearer with Samson Satele as the second year starter. Satele was a second round pick in 2007 and the bright spot for the Dolphins line in his rookie season. He is not very big at only 6’3” and 300 lbs but he has a lot of awareness which is the best quality for a center. Satele has quick feet and if he continues to improve has the potential to be a Pro Bowl caliber player in a few years with similar qualities as Jeff Saturday of the Indianapolis Colts.

2008 Outlook:
The only starter returning to the same position as he was last year is the center Samson Satele so chemistry could be a problem early in the season for this very young line. The Dolphins line will be much better in 2008 with Vernon Carey moving back to his natural position of right tackle where he was one of the top ten in the league in 2006. The left tackle position has also been upgraded with Jake Long replacing Carey and so has the right guard position with Justin Smiley replacing Rex Hadnot. The left guard position was pretty weak in 2007 with Chris Liwienski and will probably be even weaker this season. It is difficult to predict how good this line will be in 2007 but the Dolphins averaged 4.0 yards per carry in 2007 and have added two very good run blockers in Long and Smiley. The downside of this line is that there is absolutely no depth and the line will be in big trouble if any of the four good starters go down. Overall this line is well above average in run blocking as long as everyone stays healthy but remains below average in pass protection.
