Let's start with making it loud and clear. The Dolphins suck. Ok, now that everyone accepts that, we can start looking at how it began and how things could get better.

At the end of the "Wanny" era, a powerful, supernatural RB named Ricky Williams showed up. For two years, he basically covered up the decline in Miami. The defense in Miami at that time was really good too. Those were the 2002 & 2003 seasons.

Then 2004 came. Ricky was gone, and Wanny was exposed. The defense was still pretty decent, but the offense was horrible with Sammy Morris as the star RB.

In 2005, this phenomenon named Nick Saban showed up and some how changed everything. Well, that is obviously not true. The 2005 Miami Dolphins were a ONE HIT WONDER. That season had a certain dynamic about it that enabled the Dolphins to somehow finish at 9 - 7. The record was actually far better than the team.

And that brings us to 2006. There is arguably MORE TALENT on the 2006 Dolphins than the 2005 team. But the Dolphins are losing more games. So why is that? It is because Miami has DEEP issues. It isn't just running plays, blocking schemes and special teams. It isn't about the game.

They have team chemistry issues. They have old players mixed with new players. They have no identity. The Dolphins always market their PAST. I really think that is a BIG problem for Miami. It is one thing to remember the past. But it is a totally different thing to relive it every season.

So instead of trying to save face and make the Dolphins seem better than they are, just give in to the truth and get ready for the turmoil. It will get worse before it gets better. Forget 2006. The Dolphins can still develop the young guys a lot this season, and make room for some more good draft talent next season.

And don't forget this big fact...

RICKY AND DAUNTE SHOULD BE BACK NEXT SEASON.

Culpepper should be good to go by then, and Ricky will be just the thing to help Ronnie split the carries like the 2005 season. Maybe Miami can get a really good 1st round draft pick to help out their problems in the secondary. And you have to think Jason Allen will be ready next season to start.

It will take time. Look to 2007 for victory. Don;t get your hopes up in 2006 anymore.

Ricky back next season? We dont know yet. Nor is having Daunte back healthy and playing like he did 3 seasons ago. Zach Thomas will be a year older and JT may slow down with another season under his belt.
Too many over-paid over-hyped players im afraid. We need to get rid of alot of these players. We cant catch and we cant get interceptions and make plays when the ball is there to be caught. I hate our defensive backfield. I have done since we lost Surtain,Madison and Marion. We havnt replaced one of those players.
When one of our best players is a pickup from the Chargers and was primarily brought in as a KR/PR and is the most consistent WR on the team we are in trouble. Welker has shown what having heart and commitment can do. Shame alot of the other players on this team cant show the same.

Exactly. You might as well get used to waiting.

it's not so much that you're wrong... it's that you said nothing beyond the obvious... of course we're horrible, of course this season is lost, and of course it's more promising next year...

I pretty much agree. This season is a lost cause. We should consider this preparation for 2007. 1-15 should give us a draft pick in the top 3.

Might I add that we need to fire our WR coach, if he can't get these players to catch the damn ball.

This is really good stuff. It is very true. We should all stop talking about Miami and the playoffs - forget Super Bowl. Everyone should start enjoying the idea of building that team over the next few years.

And I am all for cutting big names if they aren't playing well anymore. I think Thomas has showed decline this seaons a bit. JT still looks like he will go to the Pro Bowl.

Great. Thanks for sharing. Do you have anything to add maybe? Some ideas about improving the Dolphins team?

You said something that really intrigued me. The Dolphins always market their past, its true. Your absolutely right. We have put so much value in the fact that we have a couple of guys ike JT and ZT that we refuse to adress the rest of the team as much as we worry about these guys. I love these two players, but was it a sart idea for Saban to keep them while trying to rebuild, it seems as though Saban was afraid of getting blasted for trading them so he kept them even if that meant he would have to alter his strategy around it. I would love it if we could win with these guys bc they are my favorite fins, but youre right when you say this team has a split identity between these old players and the new ones.

Dont get it mistaken, the Wanny era ended in shambles, but Saban should have started the rebuilding process instead of grabbing a bunch of old d linemen and keeping Zach and Jason. We need a new Dolphins team, our hopes of having success with zt and jt are blind, although they should be understood. We have to face it, time to blow this thing up and start a new. Saban needs to forget about what people want and start assembling a new team, with a new identity, and new players. If this means trade zach, taylor, chambers, mcmicael or whoever, then so be it.

Very good post. However I dont agree that we should wait until 2007. IMO, it will take much longer than that.

You're probably right. I think I said a few years. But you can't go any lower than the way Miami is playing right now. 2007 has to be a bit better, and hopeful things can keep inching up from there.

Actually, I felt like it was the most vague post ever. So I guess you two are speaking some other language.

perhaps you're new here... i have done so several times in the past... starting with the spring of 05 when we ignored dozens of capable offensive line free agents and draft choices, and instead gave tens of millions to 3-4 30 something defensive linemen who each play perhaps 15-25 snaps per game...

if this team doesn't take profound steps to draft or lure proven, coachable, heralded, physical specimens on its front wall next year, we'll be talking about the failed Saban tenure after another underwhelming '07... so damned arrogant to think this team, for the past 20-some years, can get by on "just a guy" on its offensive line... in this league, in this era.... it's just ridiculous, year after year...

i had typed up a 10-point program for making smarter personnel moves, but finheaven loves to log people out after a half hour, and i lost an hour's worth of work...

We've developed a culture of disappointment for the last decade plus, a losing culture will come from that if things don't change.
