Official FedEx Orange Bowl Game Thread - Iowa Vs. Georgia Tech

Coach Kirk Ferentz's 10-2 Iowa Hawkeyes of the Big 10 conference and Coach Paul Johnson's 11-2 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets of the Atlantic Coast Conference meet in the gridiron for the first time as bothy teams play in the 75th annual 2010 Federal Express Orange Bowl.

Richard Stockton and Charles Davis will announce the TV game commentary along with field reporters Chris Myers and Laura Okmin for FOX Sports, with WSVN FOX 7 televising locally in Miami on HD.

Clear skies at 56 degrees, 10% precipitation, 39% humidity, and west/northwest winds at 14 miles per hour, is forecast for tonight's 8:00PM Eastern Standard Time kickoff from Landshark Stadium in Opa Locka.

I picked Iowa in a low scoring game on a couple of sites but that game sickens me because it allows for continuing simpleton denouncement of the triple option. I've already seen it on college football sites tonight.

Georgia Tech would not sniff a BCS bowl in another offense. That attack allows them to severely outperform their talent level week to week in the regular season. Anyone who saw the Canes/Georgia Tech game witnessed how over matched Georgia Tech was.

But once they get to a bowl game the lack of overall talent is magnified. It's a plodding version of the option, not even close to what the great teams ran in the '60s through '80s. Nesbitt is a tough guy but no burst whatsoever and incredibly inept as a passer.

Switzer was 5-0 combined in bowl games against Paterno, Bowden and Osborne. There's no doubt the option is more vulnerable in bowl games. But a premier program could still win championships with it. When the same size is limited to Navy, Air Force and Georgia Tech, then naturally the ceiling is very low and it lends itself to simplistic criticism, like tonight.

Here's what the option looked like in its peak years. You'll notice how much faster and more varied Oklahoma was than the current Georgia Tech lumps:

Didn't Miami beat that great Switzer option team in 1988? And it wasn't as close as the 20-14 score would indicate.

That offense may be very good on a week to week basis, but after two years of getting drubbed in bowl games I think most major teams can come up with a good game plan to slow it down when given a month to prepare.
