Here are my questions for this team going into the opener and the season ahead:
1. Guard Play: I have killed this topic in other posts as have others. No need for more discussion. Agree.
2. B. Albert: Is he coming back too quick? How is the big man going to look? Is he in proper condition aerobically?
3. How are the receiving reps going to be spread around?Ride the hot hand
4. Are the LB's able to pull their own weight compared to the Dline? No. But many shortcomings will be covered up.
5. Is Walt Aikens going to be a liability in coverage? Is he simply ready? He will improve as the season goes on. Fortunately we don't have stellar QB's early on.
6. Is it wise to have two rookie, undrafted specialists? I think having a rookie kicker from a smaller than small school that never made a high percentage of his kicks is not wise. I am not a Sturgis guy at all, but I would have looked the veteran route. Darr? I have no issue with, but how about two rookies performing the FG operation...hold and kick? I am not a fan of the situation the FO and staff came up with.Sturgis had to go. I don't like getting rid of Fields; feels much like Carpenter.
7. Should the team have kept Don Jones?Good problem for a good team decision.
8. How do the two 30 year old plus defenders...Wake and Grimes...perform over the long haul this year?Wake should have plenty of rest throughout the season; Grimes is another story. Unless someone else steps up big time.
9. Can this team FINISH games and, later on, a season? Between the tough schedule, possible injuries and Philbin we could take a nose dive.
10. Was it wise for Philbin to put faith in Kevin Coyle to run his defense? no comment.
11. Joe. This season is on him. We have seen the feel good stories of him trying to relate to players better, allowing them to dress down on trips and taking trips to the Lincoln Memorial. However, at the end of the day this is going to be about how he and his staff motivates, designs game plans and his strength of decision in big spots. Would I feel better if Mike Tannenbaum was allowed to have picked a new coach this past offseason? Absolutely. I think it actually makes sense. That said, Philbin has another chance and he has a real opportunity to make good on his HC career. I am rooting for him to grow as a leader, and in game decision maker. Win and these issues disappear. If he fails it must be Lazor. Bringing in another coach, different system would not bode well for Tannehill.
