I was watching some film of Virginia Tech DT Luther Maddy and the guy playing opposite him turned out to be the player who grabbed my attention, Alabama OG Anthony Steen. Turns out he's a Miami Dolphin, signed late last year. Strong as a field of onions at the point of attack, looks pretty mobile to me with good lateral movement and a good kick slide for a Guard. One man's opinion, but I already like him more than all but a handful of Guards that I've scouted for this year's draft, I'll be keeping an eye on him.

Steen is RG #61 going against DT Maddy #92

This was from Rotoworld

Cardinals signed Alabama OG Anthony Steen.
Steen (6-foot-3, 314) was a three-year starter at right guard for the Crimson Tide. He missed the Senior Bowl and Combine after suffering a partially torn left labrum in his shoulder during Alabama's Sugar Bowl loss to Oklahoma. Steen was a good college starter, but has T-Rex arms (30 1/2") and small hands (9 1/8"), and isn't a great athlete. He is a low-ceiling, effort-first prospect. Sun, May 11, 2014 07:15:00 PM

Pro Career: Signed with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent out of Alabama on 5/12/14. Released on 8/30/14 and added to Cardinals practice squad on 8/31/14. Promoted to active roster on 12/1/14.

2014: Spent first 13 weeks on practice squad before being elevated to active roster on 12/1 … inactive for final four games of the regular season and Wild Card game @ Car (1/3/15).http://www.azcardinals.com/team/roster/Anthony-Steen/7e7037ad-f7a3-4249-a620-458ad99c194c

What I see on film is a 6-3 315 lb player with excellent power at the LOS and good lateral movement. I'm far less concerned about the other stuff.

Poor athlete laterally and on the move...not good in space...tiny arms...maxed out overachiever

Right guard be the only chance because of the poa play and take on but everything else is really poor...theres like no upside here...get outside of the frame work of his body and its over...theres no recover ability here

Miami has to do better

STRENGTHS: Possesses a thick, compact frame ideal for winning leverage battles in the trenches. Surprisingly quick, both when asked to slide laterally in pass protection, as well as when coming off the line downhill in second-level pursuit. Fundamentally and technically solid in pass protection exhibiting patience to sit, punch and slide with good pad. Maximizes arm extension without over-extending despite lacking ideal length. Keeps his head on a swivel and displays good awareness, and has the poise and vision to pick-up multiple rushers in a given area, without panicking or abandoning his post.

Sustains blocks to the whistle and possesses enough power to drive bigger defenders into the ground. Adequate bend in his lower half allows him to get under his opponent and absorb the bull-rush without losing significant ground. Stronger than his size would indicate. Quick to pull and get out in front of the run, and does a good job of positioning his feet to seal the edge.

WEAKNESSES: Doesn't have as great an impact blocking downfield as he does within the box, appearing at times indecisive and late to recognize defenders approaching from an angle other than head-on. Despite having a strong anchor against the bull rush, Steen is susceptible to being beat with a swim or swat as he struggles to anchor once the duel goes lateral. Lack of height and length may lead some teams to classify him as a center.

COMPARES TO: J.R. Sweezy, Guard, Seattle Seahawks - Sweezy is a bit longer and more athletic than Steen, but one might project Steen to a similar type of NFL career as a tough, durable grinder who plays bigger and more powerful than his size would indicate, and is solid enough in both facets of the game to become a starter at the next level.

He's not supposed to be reaching out and grabbing the other guys anyway, so T-Rex arms and small hands are irrelevant.

He actually has pretty darned good feet and lateral quickness, not to mention the power at the LOS. There's a decent look at him moving laterally at 1:30, he also plays with a good level of awareness, which would be a nice change of pace for Dolphins Guards. At 1:39 he's aware and athletic enough to block 2 DL and pick up a stunt- imagine what would happen on that play with Dallas Thomas.

I would call that a sign of effective recovery ability, athletic ability, awareness and smarts.

He was one of the best guards in the 2014 drafts coming out of 'Bama but he just had a shoulder surgery so he went undrafted. We all wanted Miami to sign him as an UDFA but Zona signed him then he suffered a neck injury which sidelined him for a while so he was released by them at the final cut but them placed on the PS. He is also a back up center. Count it folks, that 8 OGs on this team-Anthony Steen, Dallas Thomas, Jamil Douglas, Jarmon Bushrod, John Ulrik, Turner Billy, Jacques McLedon nd the newly signed Kraig Ulbrik. You think we draft a coupe more?

I will be sorely disappointed if Dallas Thomas makes the team, waste of a roster spot. I'd draft at least one more Guard, move Billy Turner back to OT and I'd love to see us trade Dallas Thomas to KC for Knile Davis if they'd actually do that.

I liked Steen coming out. He definitely lacks length, but I think his athleticism is being sold a bit short. Always thought he was pretty good laterally, and had some intangibles. He's a guy worth having in camp, but agree that the ceiling is low.

What I see is a powerful Guard with good lateral movement who also has a good head on his shoulders and plays with awareness. I agree with most of what you said but I don't think that his ceiling is low, I think that he can turn out to be a solid Guard for us. He doesn't have the brain farts and lack of balance issues that Thomas has, that's an improvement right there. If I were Tannehill I'd totally want this guy starting ahead of Dallas Thomas.

12/16/2013 - Report: Alabama G Steen undergoes surgery...Alabama senior offensive guard Anthony Steen underwent shoulder surgery for a partially torn labrum after the regular season ended, CBSSports.com reported Monday. The Crimson Tide will likely be without their All-SEC guard for the Sugar Bowl against Oklahoma on Jan. 2. Steen (6-2, 310) is one of the top guard prospects available for the 2014 NFL draft. He is ranked as the No. 5 offensive guard by NFLDraftScout.com and No. 72 overall, and is projected to go in the second or third round.

I see the complete opposite re his feet and lateral quickness - which in my view are very pedestrian. He has some power yes when he is engaged but no explosion coming off the LOS. And your example of decent lateral movement at 1.30 - I would view just as a shuffle based off of momentum. And at 1.39, he doesn't stay square to the LOS and has little semblance of a power step when the DE crosses his face.
