Checking in at No. 5 on the bottom five Raiders free-agent signings is right guard Mike Brisiel…
Too soon? Perhaps. Because it was not as if Brisiel was terrible; far from it. He was an absolute warrior for Oakland in his two years, fighting through countless injuries. Through the week, he could barely move in the Raiders' locker room, yet there he was on Sunday. He only missed two games in two years.
But he was not terribly effective. Again, not entirely his fault.
You see, Brisiel was the centerpiece of cash-strapped general manager Reggie McKenzie’s first free-agent class, signing a five-year, $20 million contract in 2012 to help with the Raiders’ transition to a zone-blocking scheme with Greg Knapp at offensive coordinator. It was a move made by then-rookie coach Dennis Allen that backfired.
Brisiel, who had been a dependable run-blocker with the Houston Texans, was hampered by an ankle injury that required surgery in the offseason and the Raiders' run game had trouble adjusting to the new scheme as running back Darren McFadden averaged a career-low 3.3 yards per carry.

The Raiders announced they had released Brisiel, according to Scott Bair of CSNBayArea.com.
He signed a five-year, $20 million contract in 2012, but took a pay cut last year after they abandoned the zone blocking scheme he was brought there to be part of.
With this year’s acquisition of Austin Howard to play right guard, they didn’t need him, so getting the $3.85 million off the books was of more benefit to them.
At least until they change directions again.

Raiders guard Mike Brisiel might be on his way out of the league. ESPN reported Monday that the 31-year-old guard could retire this offseason following an injury-plagued 2013 season. Brisiel has been a bust for the Raiders since coming over from the Texans as a free agent a couple of years ago.
And even after all of that, he would still be a huge upgrade over Shelley.
Just like Tyson Clabo was....And even after all of that, he would still be a huge upgrade over Shelley.
Help me understand? Is the report basically saying that at sometime between now and April, when Brisel was released, Miami showed interest? So as far as we can deduce from this statement Miami could have been interested in Brisel but opted to sign Shelly Smith or Daryn Colledge instead. It reads like Miami might still be interested, but in reality it could just be old meaningless news, maybe something put out by Brisel's agent to make in seem like there's a greater market for his client.
Did a little more digging. Brisiel has ties to OL coach Benton with his stint with the Texans.Help me understand? Free-agent OG Mike Brisiel has reportedly garnered interest from the Miami Dolphins this offseason. The New York Giants could also be in the mix following the retirement of OG Chris Snee.

I don't disagree with any part of your discription of the guy, but what you fail to mention is he would STILL be an upgrade over what we now have on the OL.Yeah lets get a washed up injury prone guy with a 75 year olds body to play on the o-line
Just like Tyson Clabo was....
