Listen guys. I have been a dolphins fan as long as I have memories. I am 30 years old. I wasn't privileged enough to watch the dominant phins of the 70's, as I am sure most of us on here weren't.

That being said, most of us really probably remember the middle 80's and more vividly the 90's to current. We remember marino making all the bombs to clayton/duper but coming up short because the F.O. didn't know what a defense was. We remember guys like j.b brown/vestee jackson getting torched repeatedly by andre reed. We remember Louis Oliver running back a Jim kelly interception 103 yards for a td in 92. We also remember the 92 AFC championship game where Kelly and Co. ran repeated screen passes to thomas/davis the whole game and killed us.

THOSE years were dissapointments to me because we knew at any given minute dan and co. could bring us back only to have the lead taken away on a flick of the wrist by warren moon, jim kelly, or ken O'brien. Football seemed to mean so much back then, or at least to me back then.

Then the scenery started to change. Marino went down in the cleveland game. We endured that only to see him come back as a very good qb and continued to watch the team erode. Then jimmy johnson took over and we know how that ended. Then we had to endure the years of wanny and saban and cam. The team spun into mediocrity.

I always stayed a die had fan. My direct tv bills prove it. It isn't cheap. However, win the continued losing and the broken promises, I didn't expect this year to be any different.

We got a supposed busted up qb and a loud mouthed linebacker that we "overpaid" for just the year before who didn't amount to much at the time. We also got a new front office and coach. I didn't know what to expect because this was occuring so often that realistically I didn't think it was going to make any different. I was burned by our supposed savior saban after practically rejoicing when wanny resigned and bates too over. Saban bolted but the repeated jabs from the franchise started to sting less and less over time as apathy started to reign in.

This year though, I was overly critical of the team because of things that had happened in the past. Then I started to see a change. This new guy TS started to demand accountability for players peformances. Players didn't fake injuries and actually were over performing. When I look at the team, I don't see a team loaded with individual talent. Sure we have some guys and we all know the household names but it was/is obvious where our holes are and what needs to be done in the long term. That being said though, the guys were still finding a way to win.

Looking on that I began to start to see that the culture of the dolphins was changing. For years, I had seen guys like marion, surtain and madison leave the team. The problem was the end result was the same when we had them than when they were gone. We still were losing. Ok maybe not as bad when we had our real solid defense in the early 2000's but again we didn't overall amount to much. I started to wonder about the culture that was left from this losing regime. That led me to thomas and taylor. I liked them but began to wonder if we should cut ties and start over. I wrestled with that because surely "they" weren't part of the overall problem.....or were they???

Now that they are both gone, the attitude and mentality of this team has done a complete 180. We are wininng with the odeyle's (sp?), hills and goodmans of the nfl. Who? My point exactly. These guys would be 2nd team players on other teams but yet since the atmosphere has changed, we had guys that weren't relying on their own individual talents or lack thereof and buying into the program in which BS and more importantly TS was laying the foundation for. What was the end result of that? An AFC championship and an 11-5 record. All for a team that was basically discarded as the 80's lions and bucs of the NFL.

What am I saying here? HOW IN THE WORLD CAN YOU BE UPSET AT ANYTHING THAT HAS HAPPENED THIS YEAR? Rome wasn't built overnight and yet as usual, people are jumping the gun and lashing out at players who will be the framework for a very good dolphins team in the years to come. Pennington is the stop gap mentor for hopefully henne, beck or someone else that we are going to bring in. Porter may be the same for crowder or another emerging linebacker that may be brought in. You guys have to see the bigger picture. If you want any proof that the culture and mentality is changing in the locker room, get a hold of any of the mic'd up stuff of TS in the locker room with our guys or even pennington walking the sidelines. A better indicator is that our guys are re-learning how to be football players? How do I know this? Fundamentally sound teams don't turn the ball over and they win close games. Didn't we tie an amazing record this year for lack of turnovers? Now magnify this by the fact that we have glaring talent holes, a new regime and F.O. and players that didn't even probably know each other but yet were relying on each other to get it done in the trenches. THAT tells me enough.

That being said and many thoughts have elluded me as I write this but be proud to wear your aqua and orange. There are what 23 other teams in the NFL that cannot say they are where we have been this year, let alone hoist a division champtionship bannner AND say they came around from a 1-15 record to win their division.

Next year is going to be the big year. Our schedule is brutal but who knows. Teams ebb and flow. This years titans could be next years 4-12 team.

Keep your heads up. Any long term fan that has been with the club long enough can sense what I am talking about.

I will say this though. I am quite surprised at the much reduce quantity of "oh noes the sky if falling and I am going to kill myself" type threads. I figured the site would be well on it's way to burning down.

Amen brotha. No one can be angry about anything that went down today. Yes, be sad it's over (as I am). But there's nothing to be angry about.

I don't think any Fins fan worth his salt is saying the sky is falling. Everyone is absolutley ecstatic about how this season and turnaround went.

But make no mistake: the team in purple today is the team that the Trifecta want to build. A power team with a big line and suffocating defense. Face it people, the Fins of 2008 were a finesse team. Do you think Parcells likes running backs running east-west all day in a playoff game?

The fact is, the Fins need to build the identity of power. They still do not have the players to do that. No Rome was not built in a day, but make no mistake - this team wants to be like the Ravens. I for one hope they get there.

The bottom line is that nothing was going to ever change until the diseased and festering mentality that plagued this team easily since the days of marino and shula and reached it's pinnacle IMO during the end of the wanny's years was finally cured.

While nothing is absolutely certain, it seems we are on the right path. Could this season be a one hit wonder? Doubtful. We were fundamentally sound in too many facets of the game this year. I guess we will be able to start seeing the bigger picture after next year. The schedule definitely will give us the opportunity to showcase our ability.

i just wish the bills would of traded for brett favre and let go trent edwards

Edwards hasn't proven anything yet. The Jills getting favre has set their team backward at least 2 years IMO. If he comes back, then even more. Who on their roster is going to get it done, kelly clements (sp?).

I do believe we have found the qb for the next couple years in pennington and that will leave either beck or henne to duke it out.

Regardless, we are on the right path. To me this season has been like taking a long flight that you know is going to take a few hours and then the captain coming on and saying that your arriving in your destination about 30 minutes early. That is the kind of satisfaction I have right now looking back on our franchise.

i agree with much of your post. I think that a season like this at the end of the decade symbolizes a new era for the dolphins. I dont agree that we hit mediocrity until saban and the ricky shinanigans. Wanny had some ****ty drafts etc but we were a contender then at least a serious threat. our defense was one of the best. I see how this year we were a finesse team. I dont mind playing with a nice short pass game, alotta tricks etc. but i too hope we can add a power running game, a deep threat at wr and a more merciless defense. we'll have to see

Don't get me wrong, we were mediocre since the last superbowl appearance. Our last best shot was the AFC championship in our own backyard in '92 until jim kelly ran screen passes all day against us.

Our front office even with shula in the waning hours of his career, didn't know what a defense was. Does marco coleman or chuck klingbeil scare anyone? How about TJ tuner and david griggs??

Anyway plain and simple you win through the draft. I don't care what people say. Probably the most glaring example of our franchises mismanagment was the following stat:

Take a look at our draft history since 1993 and then tell me a guy that actually remained on the team for any length of time except for the obvious ones like O.J. Mcduffie and Tim Bowens, Zach and Taylor and obviously the recent crop of guys from the past 2-3 drats. THAT is your telling stat right there. Billy Milner...yeah that is a great one. Yatil Green...ooops.

Even MORE alarming is the fact that since that time we only have a HANDFUL of players that are still on the team and that is because of the last few drafts. Sickening.

BP KNOWS you win through the draft and that is why we will NOT be getting any marquis players through free agency.

That is such a load of crap. Parcells wanted Pace last year and offered him a $20 million signing bonus. Miami is in the best position cap-wise in the league being almost $30 million under the cap. It's obvious PArcells and Ireland will definitely spend the money if the right "marquee" player comes along via free agency.

Sure you build the core of your team through the draft, but they will also spend the money in free agency if the right player (to them) comes along. I bet if Jordan Gross comes on the market that Miami will be the first team that contacts him (just like Miami was on the phone with Smiley last year just seconds into the free agency period, and closed the deal).

And let's not forget that Miami all of a sudden is a very appealing place to play. Free agent Players don't see a 1-15 team to come to, but now they see an 11-5 team, and an AFC EAST champion team, that is headed by a fantastic front office and a coach that you love to play for.

Ok since you know BP's tendencies in free agency, tell me the last time bill parcells (non jerry jones because we ALL know who calls the shots in dallas and that is why BP left IMO) went out and broke the bank?? Parcells is going to build this team in the trenches first but he isn't going after a pre-madonna who demands big money. I will be very surprised if he did.

I agree that free agents are going to look here but again BP isn't going to break the bank on guys IMO. I will be very surprised if he even went out and got boldin. Just not the way he builds his teams.
