Ok so we win the toss this Sunday...what do we do and why?

Ok so lets say we win the toss this weekend vs the Texans. Should we take the ball or defer to the second half.

I say defer because that way we can go out there on D set the tone show them we are here to play. Make them go 3 and out basically blowing the fact they got the ball first and then go get some points.

So what do you think we should do if we win the toss and WHY?

Defer is the best option. As a Penn State fan, I am very familiar with a team defering to the second half and kicking to start the game.

You want to kick to start, because like you said, it establishes the game if you go out on Defense. Plus, it is always nice to be able to start the second half with the ball.

Yeah i mean to start the second half with the ball can 1) kill any momentum the other team may have by going on a long drive and get some points or 2) continue with your momentum and go put them away and kill their hopes of coming back

I always like to defer and for all of the reasons listed above. I like to set the tone defensively and I want to start the second half with the ball in case I'm down a score or need to kill momentum carried back out from the first half.

I think you defer at home and take the ball on the road.

It is important to score first on the road in the NFL, take the fans out of the game if you can.

Thats actually a brilliant logic, never thought of that. I always used to want to kick first (if I was a coach) but this thinking is very good. :)

challenge the defense, make them go out and make the important stop and then get some good field position on special teams, get the ball and score...thats how i would like the game to start...


edit-i think you would take the fans out of the game if they see you can shut down there offense and then come back and score...

Seeing as though the 2 games we won we scored first, and the 2 games the opposition scored first we lost.....I think the decision is easy....TAKE THE KICKOFF!!

Well, on Madden, I always kick first for no particular reason, since if I want the crowd noise down, I can just mute the TV.

With our secondary, you always have a chance that they allow a huge play on the first drive. We're better now, but these are the same guys that allowed the Brett Favre's lobs to be caught, as well as Kurt Warner to throw all over us, and for Cassell to actually get a TD against us instead of getting an easy pick. We were much better vs SD, but still.

I would still kick it, because............I have no clue. For all of the reasons stated above?

The Chargers scored first they kicked a field goal first the we countered with a field goal.

I missed the game last weekend. Did they win the toss and elect to kick off?

I would always think you would want the ball 1st and set the tone.
I never see teams electing to kick off after winning the toss.

If anything I'd much rather defer on the road. Nobody wants to start off the game going against a tough defense and a pumped up crowd. Also, when you get the ball to begin the 3rd, 1/2 of the crowd will still be in the bathrooom or getting snacks, thus crowd noise isn't a factor on that first drive in the 2nd half.

Not true. I posted a thread about this. The Chargers scored first during the last game

We won the toss against the Chargers and chose to defer.

Defer is always the best option. It gives us the ball coming out of halftime (although it did us no good vs the Chargers) but its good to know we will get the ball and make them try to score first.

I have always deferred the kick on Madden.
