For anyone who actually watched the individual play of our OL, I am curious as to what you think. Tuff to do with the injury to James and Albert being up and down. Also, there was trying to use Cameron as a blocker, and a whole lotta team sacks from guys unblocked on the blitz.

IYO, was Pounce a Pro Bowler? Albert worth keeping? Was James improved before the injury? Did Dallas improve in his first year as a full time starter? Did Turner show enough to think he will be a solid starter? Will Douglas fit in? Anyone want to keep Fox?

If turner can ever be consistent he could be really good.

But right now he's almost completely hit or miss. He will either open up a huge whole to run through or completely whiff a block. No thanks on keeping fox, and Douglas fits In perfectly with the other soft lineman (martin, Thomas) we have drafted since philbin got here.

I actually think a big part of our oline problems was play calling. Tannehill was like a boxer who never moves his head. You know exactly where he's going to be, it doesn't exactly take much work to hit him.

I don't think we moved him around near enough, I also don't think we took advantage of our agile lineman.

If you watch some of Lamar Millers runs vs The Texans, you see our lineman pretty far down the field, they got them in space, and it was beautiful, that's what we brought them here for, that's what the oline is built for, but it seems like we never do it.

Miami needs a total and complete shift from Philbin's philosophy for OL, he sissified the OL. He preferred "finesse" offensive lineman who are so soft at POA. And this is the kicker, these "light" OL are allegedly good for running game because of their ability to pull, shift and move but where is the running game? These guys gets pushed back too often by bigger and stronger defenders. Tony Sparano did one good thing for Miami and it was building a strong OL. Wheres the beef, now ? Miami needs cornfed, big and strong OL. They need to get bigger on the OL, PerioD!

How exactly did all the cornfeds do? About the same as Joe's finesse guys as I recall.

This article is about the Raverns ZBS but is applicable to the Dolphins. Both guards are worth replacing and Jason Fox should never ever wear the Phins colors ever again.

A lot can be fixed with reps in practice and in games. The guards (Thomas and Turner) are young enough and teachable enough to get a chance but Fox is not worthy.

**
FWIW: When Lazar was fired and THill takeover calling protection and audibling the OL play improved to just plain suck from god-aweful suckage.

We need to bring at least one solid guard via FA. Get rid of Dallas Thomas, he's trash.

And we need to upgrade our #3 tackle position. Jason Fox is a disgrace as a football player. There has to be someone better out there that we can sign.

Pretty Simple in my opinion....

Dallas Thomas is a complete joke. He doesn't belong in the NFL
Jason Fox is a complete Joke. He also doesn't belong in the NFL
Albert is injured far too often. I give him 1 more year..... But I draft a tackle or sign one in FA
James is Average. I give him next year to prove himself
Turner and Douglas get next year to improve but I definitely draft a guard and bring another one in via FA

That linked article is very good because it summarizes correctly: In a zone scheme you are relying on combination blocks and decisions on the fly.

Extra variables, like a parlay with an added game or two. There's a reason those parlays pay big when they connect but generally aren't the best choice.

I prefer simple. Tough guys who defeat the man in front of them. Our offensive line recently is more like a Cotillion.

I was preaching all last off season that the biggest need on the OL was a swing OT to replace Fox. How the hell do you keep someone who was unable to replace Dallas at RT last year.?

Pouncey played well and is a lock. Next.

James has not proven anything but, has not really had the opportunity to show what he can do. Have to stay with him.

Albert is great when healthy, about 75% of the time. IMO, a LT who is 75% as good but plays 100% is better because of the continuity he gives the OL as a whole. A much better back up than Fox evens thins out but, I would still look to trade him next year if we can get a decent offer for the future.

Dallas has showed some improvement but, not as much as I was looking for. I still give him another year.

Turner has also showed improvement in he redshirt rookie year. Have to see more.

Add in Douglas, who flashed some talent as a rookie in very limited snaps. It would not surprise me to see the same three fighting for two jobs next year and the team not making and substantial moves at OG. this depends a lot on the new coaches.

My Analysis:

LT- Great starter, extremely injury prone, nobody to take over when he goes down.
Guards- Bad to horrible, even less talent to back up positions.
Center- Very good starter, extremely injury prone, nobody to take over when he goes down. (Hmm, sounds familiar)
RT- Solid talent that is actually getting better, coming back from 1st major injury (Does it effect his career?), No talent behind him to take over.

I really think if Miami can get one great (maybe even good) guard, and some luck injury wise, this line could be much much better.

I think the whole OL should be on the hot seat. Pouncey being the best of the group. Albert is a good player but too fragile. How many missed time injuries this year, 5, 6? James is a promising starter, but he would have needed a solid entire season with a good guard next to him to know for sure, he had neither. Everyone else should be very worried IMO. I think we bring in a lot of OL this offseason, have open competition for every position and field the best 5 next year.

That said, no unit in football is more dependent on coordination and chemistry than an offensive line. The same 5 guys need to line up together on every practice and every play of every game. When they do, they become better as the season goes along, They also get synched with the running backs and QB. The holes are anticipated in the run game and the QBs clock in his head sharpens. But our line was not very good to start with, Albert missed all of camp and preseason and the whole thing went downhill from there.

That's the way I see it anyway.

This is a reply I got from Phintim Menace on the other forum I visit. Thought it was worth sharing.

to me the OL has been the biggest issue on the team in Philbin's time here. It's been so frustrating to watch

Agreed, this OL is not that bad it's what we are asking them to do that's rediculous. We just need to upgrade the weak links and teach them to run block because it's easier to run block than constantly hold blocks for 2.5-3.5 seconds. We also need to be able to adjust our blocking schemes. If you saw a football life of Shula, he knew each football game was 2 half's and essentially two different games. You have to counter the defensive adjustments the other team makes. I really wish we would have kept Todd Bowls.
