Something to consider on the OL. Benton has 23 years of coaching the OL, is very well respected, and has a proven track record. Philbin was an OL coach for many a year. Tannenbaum has at least seen VG OL play with the Jets, Lazor has been a coach in seeing a great OL in Philly, and Campbell has also seen his fair share of VG OL play Combined they total over a century of OL experience.

So, what is going wrong? And why do some fans think they know more than guys who individually forgot more than any fan knows on the OL? Some question guys on the OL on footwork, etc. Anyone really believe this is a revelation to what coaches have not seen?

I do not have any answer other than players play and why they were picked but, cannot fault coaching and the overall OL knowledge of the team. JMO

Well my first question would be why Douglas over Turner. Turner seems better no? Why did they go with Douglas first.

I get what you're saying, but Turner's play since given the opportunity to start does make me question the talent/performance evaluation of the coaches and the front office. Most fans assumed Jamil Douglas would compete with Dallas Thomas on the left side since LG was the position he played in college. Why confuse a rookie by making him switch sides, and what have the coaches seen that make them believe Dallas Thomas should continue to be a starter? How has Hickey gone 2 off seasons without adequately addressing the guard problem?

The O-line isn't the only position where questionable depth chart decisions have been made. Jelani Jenkins didn't get on the field until there was an injury. Philbin and the FO didn't recognize what they had in Rishard Matthews until it was almost too late. How about Earl Mitchell continuing to play over Mosley and Phillips.

Sometimes teams mess these things up. I think it's healthy for fans to continue to question these moves, or lack of moves in certain cases.

Turner was bad in practice and preseason. All rhey really had to go on. Has shown improvement since moving in the lineup. Sad that we can't find a better opt option than Thomas.

Qb holds the ball waaaay to long takes sack and safetys. You kind of answered your question, we keep changing o-linemen, coordinators, etc...but same results.

Qb. No one is addressing that in the equasion.Tanny takes sacks, gets safetys and the nfl already knows he dreads going deep, they know 70% of the time, hes looking for landry and their keeping guys around our line which doesnt help our run game either.

This o-line isnt as bad as its made out. If brady or rogers or manning (either one)were qb-ing this team, no one would be talking about the o-line. Their not the top line, but their not near as bad as fans think. Thomas needs to be a reserve and not a starter.

Coming into this season I thought that if Albert were healthy, we would be OK with Pouncey, James, and two of the three young guys in Dallas, Douglas, and Turner. The reality has been that Albert was not ready and now much better, Pouncey has been great, James was pretty good but injured, and the young guys have been so-so.

Not only do the five have to click together (which they have not had a chance to do) but, Tannehill and Miller have to know what to expect them to do (which they have not had time to do). Not making excuses, this is OL reality.

There has been no stability with the team. Just think about the last 5 years or so. We go from Tuna and power blocking to a ZBS and Philbin, change Ireland for Hickey, change OC and OL coach, add Tannenbaum, and change to Campbell. All of these moves have an effect on the OL even more so than the rest of the O.

We have tried to fix the OL through the draft and FA but, have to wonder with all the changes if we have been looking for the same type of player on the OL on any kind of consistent basis.

A lot of these "gurus" build their reps on bull****. It's getting harder in this league to recognize the true grit from the fluff perception. After watching Benton, you have to believe Kubiak was the one doing the heavy lifting.

Sorry, I'm not buying the excuses some of you are making for this offensive line
You have New England who had 2 undrafted free agents starting this season plus another
4-forth rounders who have had substantial playing time who seem to be getting the job done

Yeah , I have no idea what games you have been watching , or how much OG you're packing in bowl after bowl .... But anyone can see that this line is garbage . Regardless of what QB you have.

And if you think that this line is better than the one Manning was playing with , I say was because he got benched then you're out of your mind .

You can't compare our o line to the Broncos .

Also , why does everyone try to Compare Tannehill or other qbs to Brady who is possibly the best QB of all time and Rodgers who is one of the best all time . Ofcourse our team would play better with one of the greatest qbs of all time , that's idiotic . Just cause we'd play better doesn't mean the o line would be better.

Michael Jordan would makes the 76ers a playoff team , that doesn't mean the players around him aren't garbage . Wake up that argument is moronic

How much heavy lifting is Kubiak doing in Denver where their O is a mess, run and pass?

Pats have not run well (under 4 ypc) but have a Brady who can get off most of his passes in under 2 seconds when need be. We do not have a HOF QB who some consider as the best of all time. Not a very fair comparison.

Dallas Thomas is still regularly getting blown up. It's not every play like in years past but he's still good for 3 or 4 what-in-the-world-did-I-just-see?-type plays in any given game. Billy Turner is a better run blocker than a pass blocker and that's okay if we had a coaching staff that believed in running the ball more than 12 times a game. Play action would help OL like Turner until they get good enough veteran skills to pass block more effectively. They do this in places like Green Bay and Dallas and it helps in their OL development.

And I agree with the perplexity over moving Jamil Douglas to the right side in his rookie year when he played his whole football career on the left. If there's one bone I have to pick with this coaching staff - and it goes back to the beginning of the Philbin era - is that this coaching staff is absolutely obsessed with trying to prove they can have 'versatility' at every position on the team. They are constantly moving guys all over the place on offense and defense in the name of this ineffable quality when they should be focused on getting the guys better at what they already do early in their careers. Lineman, linebackers and corners are constantly being shuffled all over the place on this roster. It's dizzying!

In my opinion, this is just coaches having inferiority complexes over Bill Belichick and his legendary ability to pull this off. Everybody wants to prove they can do the same. It's like our offensive coordinator who can't just be happy sticking with plays that work. He inexcusably at some point in every game has to "get cute" and start running WR bubble screens or shotgun runs in short yardage to show how brilliant he is.

I'm of the opinion that in today's NFL the limited practice reps in the offseason and during the week in-season mean you need to maximize the time a player gets at his best position. If Juwann James goes down it won't matter if Jason Fox split his reps 70-30 between the left and right sides. He still will have spent most of his time at LT and will not be really solid at RT until he's put in a full week of practice on that side, anyway. Stop crazily switching guys all over the place!

In related news, Chris McCain is not a LB - I thought we were past this. The jury has long been in. Keep him at DE and keep getting him his reps.
