Devil Rays Could be Gone for 2007
Tampa Bay ownership exploring name change after '06 By: Marc Topkin - sptimes.com
January 15, 2006
The team on the field might not reflect it, but the Devil Rays organization is undergoing significant change.
With a fresh approach and attitude under the new ownership and management, there are millions being spent to upgrade the facility and improve the fan experience. There are creative executives being hired, and holdover ones being empowered. There are all kinds of innovative concepts (clean restrooms! a decent sound system!) floating around along with new ideas, such as plans for a huge touch tank of live rays on the right-centerfield patio.
Bigger news might be coming.
Top officials are privately talking about ideas that would change the entire look and identity of the team for the 2007 season - from the name to the colors to the logos to the uniforms.
At the least, it seems likely the word "Devil" will be dropped, as it already is in some official team references. Then a decision has to be made whether to continue associating Rays with the sea creatures or to connect with the sun. Or there could be a new name, such as the Tampa Bay Tarpons.
The name issue likely will drive the others, and it reasons that if one is changed they all will be, and done neatly to commemorate what will be marketed as the 10th anniversary season.
Discussions are very much preliminary. Concepts have to be designed. Focus groups need to be convened. MLB officials have to be consulted. Procedures must be followed, including a March 31 deadline to notify MLB of a possible change and details by May 31. Decisions have to be made.
The team on the field in 2007 is expected to be considerably better. From the sound of the whispers, it will look considerably different too.
This is a portion of an article which originally appeared in the St Petersburg Times.

YEAH AND WILL THE SPONSER BE JOHNSON & JOHNSON.

I like this "new" organization. They are going in the right direction. I like the term Devil Rays. I hope they don't make the Rays because.... it's stupid. But color change might be a good idea IMHO

:refuse:

the tampons will never be the name. players have already spoke agaisnt it. no more gay *** fish...if we change we need a tough animal or something tough as our mascot...

its not likely to change though imo. we just put a HUGE take with a bunch of rays in our Right center field stands.

Tarpons? You think there is a nice ring to it? Change their name from one fish to another? Come on, they can come up with something better than that!

We are talking about a pretty new team, all the bad luck they have, ended up in the WRONG division, as their is no way in hell currently they can compete with such teams like the Yankees, RedSox, Blue Jays, and Orioles, but perhaps they can, if they make themselves more attractable. They got a bunch of nice prospects, let's just see if they can hold on to them as they mature.

They should look over the NFL, and come up with something that goes well with the "Tampa Bay" name; too bad that the "Buccaneers" are taken, cause that really matched perfectly for the Tampa Bay NFL team.

Anyone here got any other ideas besides Tarpons?

Lightning.......DOOH:goof:

I don't see anything wrong with the mascot they have.
Rays are very cool creatures and the idea of a tank in the stadium would create a very unique experience at the games.

Maybe the ownership should just pay more attention to the team on the field rather than gimmicks like name changes.
No one will care if they are still a sub .500 team with a new name.

They've got some good players on that team and some good talent in the minors. A couple of good moves and I fell they could be a contender.

I don't think they should have gotten rid of Huff.

He recently moved to Miami Beach.

IMO, one problem they have is where they play. That area sucks.

The Lightning play in downtown Tampa. The Bucs play on Dale Mabry. The Rays.....well they play next to a dirty Winn Dixie in a residential neighborhood across the bay in south St. Pete. And you have to go in a big circle to get there. I can't believe there was actually an All-Star game there. Maybe it's gotten better since the last time I went.

And the name is just fine IMO.

no. it hasnt gotten better, its pretty much in the hood.

Tampa had some young talent a few years ago, but how can u compete in that AL East w/o any big names. I mean its cool to have had guys like Huff, Crawford and whoever else, but they have never really had any big FA's come there and contribute. Even Florida had Sheffield, Bonilla and company in 97 and picked up Pudge for the 03 run. Its about time they just start over.

Tampa Bay Tarpons . . I can see the tampon jokes a mile away, tho it has a decent ring . . come on wtf is a tarpon, sounds like what they do when there is a rain delay.

They can use the old USFL team name
Tampa Bay Bandits

or the NASL tampa Bay Rowdies
