Chad Pennington has the same problem that Jay Feidler had when he was our QB, both have little arm strength and do not threaten a defense more than 20yds. beyond the line of scrimmage. As our defensive foes did when they game planned for Jay, they're are going to stack the box and cover the short routes. They will take the calculated gamble that they can give limited coverage on the deep routes.

I'm not here to hate on Chad. He maximizes his strengths and minimizes his weaknesses. He is a very a intelligent player when he is in the game, but it is going to be increasingly difficult to generate offense as the season wears on.

This is why I think that we should give Henne a shot. If we put him in there, he is going to take his lumps. But he will give us an arm that can utilize Ginn's speed and loosen up the defense. Maybe as the Ds back away from the LOS, R&R can get into a groove and we won't have to rely on Chad as much. I think it is a win/win proposition. We get needed experience for the future and we can have an even more productive running game.

Some may say that you are going to ruin his confidence. But I say that is BS. How long has he been playing the game? He'll know the hand he has been dealt and if he doesn't, you sit down and explain it to him. If he is so weak minded that he can't handle it, I don't want him as the starting QB anyway.

Though both struggle with throwing the deep ball, there are some huge differences between Fiedler and Pennington.

Let's point out a few:
1) Fiedler had more or less a 1 to 1 touchdown to interception ratio (69 touchdowns and 66 interceptions). Pennington, on the other hand, has thrown 88 touchdowns to just 58 interceptions.

2) Fiedler had a career completion ratio of 58.7 (very sub par). Pennington has completed 65.9 percent of his passes (astronomical even for a dink and dunk passer like him).

3) Fielder had a career passer rating of 77.1 while Pennington has a career passer rating of 89.6.

So other than their pedestrian arm strength, they have little in common.

I was comparing their arm strength. I am aware that the similarities end after that.

Gotcha. I figured as much, but I thought it would be worthwhile to point some of them out.

Didn't Fiedler QB our last playoff win?

Didn't Fiedler QB our last playoff win?

Yes he did, and god knows, I was one of the bigger Fiedler apologists.

That said, take a look at his stat line in that 23-17 victory over the Colts:
19 of 34 for 185 yards with 1 TD and 3 INTs

Miami won that game in overtime thanks to solid defense and superhuman effort by Lamar Smith (40 carries for 209 yards and 2 touchdowns including the game winner in overtime).

It would be hard to attribute that win to Fiedler.

I'm not necessarally saying Henne should get a shot but I think Chad's limitations are hurting this team. I think this is going the way the FO thought it was going to go, though, and, we'll see what happens. I think the FO is protecting Henne at this point, truth be told and we'll see a strong run next year.

this part i agree with and it is troubling and difficult to watch honestly, look at all the posts about how bad our recievers are. its a direct correlation with your points. its a total team game though and there are other factors involved. you raise some valid points though and i agree with your concept

You and GoonBoss bring up some valid points.

I think that the bottom line at this point is that Parcells and Sparano believe that Pennington bring enough to the table to win games (defense has been our main liability in the last two defeats).

Couple that with Parcells' history of distrusting young QBs and it spells a prolonged tenure for Pennington in my opinion.

and penny has not been bad. but you can't ignore the facts from our games. sparano and pennington both say long ball plays have been called, but they have not been thrown, not once. its possible that things just haven't worked out but man i'd like to see him just huck one down there anyway. it couldn't hurt to try and let your boy make a play or get a possible interference call, loosen up the d, and make me feel better. watch he'll try it this week and get intercepted, blow my whole argument up.

and i'm not saying longer plays. we have seen longer plays called, the ball has gone 20-25 yards in the air. but i'm saying, long balls, you know, fly routes down the field. i wanna see ginn go straight past a defender and 45-50 yards before a nice lofted ball settles nicely into his hands in stride....... sorry, maybe got carried away there reminiscing about marino,,,, but at least a little longer than we've seen so far you know

completion % is a very stupid stat. nevre takes into account the distance the ball travels. obvously a 2 yard passing QB will set the record for that stat.

Marino i think had a 57% as well, fiedler had a higher one, does that make fiedler better?

I don't think Trent Edwards is suffering from playing last season. Flacco and Ryan seem to be handling the pressure. It really is time for Henne to get on the field. Pennington will be an asset on the sideline. At this point, we're just prolonging the inevitable. Henne's been a starter everywhere, every year and he knows the left tackle pretty well.
