I'm overstating to a degree but, what he does has such a domino effect on everything Miami will and can do this off season as well as the team's future. Some food for thought.

If he signs a reasonable long term deal we are in good shape with the cap, can keep Miller, add a VG FA at CB along with an OG, and have space left for other need.

If we tag him, we need to restructure Suh at 29 where we have no out after 2017 affecting the present and future of the team.

If we want to tag and trade, he has to approve the deal or there will be none. We could get left with nothing.

OV's decision will have a big impact on what we will do in FA as well as the draft.

I can't recall any single player having this much impact on what our team does. This coming from a third round pick. Who woulda thunk it

I don't understand what you mean in the Franchise & trade scenario. How does he have to approve it?

No team is going to make a trade unless OV agrees to a long term deal with them. There is no way they will give up anything to pay over $15M for a year.

Aligning ourselves to allow his decision to have influence over our offseason is a mistake.

Frankly, if I'm keeping him, I'd give OV a fair chance to negotiate before the deadline. Upon the deadline, if no deal in place, I tag him and move on to my other priorities. I wouldn't address him again until FA and the draft are over. I'd reserve the $15M in my budgeting and work around it.

If he negotiates a deal, then roll the savings from his $15M into next year's cap and move on.

I say this because we should be targeting a DE in the draft regardless. Either OV is gone or Wake fades into the sunset in the next year or so. Either way, I'm drafting insurance. His decision would not impact my offseason other than reserving the cap space.

We have enough restructures and looming cuts to create the space we need to maneuver in FA. Besides, my priority at this point is the draft. This draft will be the key to rebuilding our D. Unless it is an OG, I want an entire draft for the D.

OV wouldn't be a concern for me, honestly. Either he wants to be here or he doesn't. Don't misunderstand, I do want OV back. But I wouldn't let him hamstring me.

All this over a guy with 7.5 sacks and 5 personal fouls....lol

All this over a top ten FA to be who is 25 and a building block for a team in dire need of them.

So Be - there is a pretty simple solution and that is to put the franchise tag on OV and cut some money elsewhere. I don't think he's worth $15M for a season but that's where it stands. Tannenbaum and Grier will have a good handle on the Draft talent in a few days. If we let Olivier walk, our FA and Draft priorities are likely to change. However, there is a solid argument for fiscal conservatism when the value is probably not there and you know that you are paying way too much. He's a decent player with good upside but $15M can buy several good players. An interesting dilemma to resolve.
You are right, OV is the first domino.

If They sign him they will be in a worse shape bc they will be stuck w a bum thinking the position is solved

OV is not worth more then 7 or 8 million a year and thats over paying him. He is not that good of player. Get rid of him and spend the money else where. He will likely end up on the Patriots and have a hell of a season but the Dolphin management deserves that because we failed to sign him last year. The Dolphins will do fine without him though - he's just not that good of a player.

I would spend the 15 million on the offensive line. Plus draft at least 2 o lineman -

I would trade down as much as possible and try and draft 7 defensive players to boot.

I would get rid of grimes or offer him an incentive loaded contract take it or leave it.

I would cut Matt Moore too much $.

I would not restructure Suh - leave it alone - we are not a playoff team next year.

Draft well this year - next year and have some cap room and build it out...

Its another 6 and 10 year in Miami and f...ing OV will not make a difference...

And I am not a Miller fan for $5million - I'd give him 3 or let him walk - he can't break a tackle.

So OV is not that good but will have a hell of a season with New England? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense

You cannot budget $15M this year without restructuring Suh. It is not there.

Not that simple Spike. The space is not there for the tag without Suh. and it is sounding that it will only buy a year before we have the same problem.

Side note- If Tannenbaum and Grier need a few days to get a handle on draft talent, they are in the wrong line of work. :)

Yes it does because he's a piece of a puzzle for them not a pillar of their team.

Players like OV can produce in a system where he's just one part of something.

In Miami he's an every down player where by over spending on him we are left with too little else to work with.

Let the guy go - and suffer the humiliation that we blew it when we could have signed him for 8 or 9 a year last year.

So OV is not that good but will have a hell of a season with New England? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense

Anyone care to list, as many as you can, 4-3 DE's who are better than Vernon?
