I know we all dislike twitter toughguy Omar Kelly, but he does provide some decent insight on radio interviews. On today's Joe Rose Show interview he reiterated what many of us have already believed for some time, that Philbin (not Ireland) was the main driving force in pushing out talented but troubled players off the team, including Vontae, Dansby and Brandon Marshall. He states that he heard this directly from the players involved.

While Ireland can still be faulted for the bad compensation and the poor use of those draft picks, the fault for getting those players off the team in the first place lands on Joe Philbin...

As long as Philbin is around, don't expect too many playmakers or outspoken leaders on the team. (And without that, you can kiss playoffs goodbye)

Duh...I said it then and was killed by others that it was all J.I. It had Philbin written all over it then and still does.

Terrible coach.

Were taking Omar Kelly serious now ? Since when?

i'm sure a gm has zero say in who's cut or traded :rolleyes2:

The GM certainly has input, but in the roles constructed under Tuna and the one that succeeded him, the GM didn't have power over the HC, they were on equal ground and worked together. In such a structure, the GM's job is to make moves that fit the HC's vision. If the HC doesn't want a player around, the GM needs to find a way to get value for them or get rid of them. Likewise, if the HC wants a certain player, the GM needs to find a way to get them.

When Philbin replaced Sparano, the type of player the HC was looking for was completely different. In the case of Philbin, he didn't want strong personalities around that threatened his role on the team. He also didn't want troublemakers. I can understand the Marshall move and supported it at the time. Ireland's failure to adequately replace Marshall that season falls entirely on Ireland. As is the inability to replace Vontae and Dansby.

But it's pretty clear that Philbin was not only on board with those moves, but he was actually driving them. Philbin didn't get along with any of the guys that were cut or traded, including Vontae, Dansby and Bush.

I betcha Odrick is gone because he "talked back". I do not want him back necessarily, but he is out because of attitude not performance.

Anyone that has a voice will be gone. As much as I hate the hit they would take on Wallace I almost expect him to be gone.

As someone else stated, Philbin has a vision for the team. And for better or worse, I believe he doing his best to stick with it.

This is brought up because Vontae is playing at a much higher level than when he left. Some of that is attributed to growing up and some to development through coaching. This is nothing more than piling on.

Vontae Davis, Karlos Dansby, and Brandon Marshall were rightfully shipped off this team. I do not miss any of them. Vontae Davis was all Ireland though.

Most people could see that Vontae wasn't done developing. He never "sucked" while playing in Miami. His problem was maturity... But rather than coaching up an immature physically gifted player like Vontae, Philbin would just rather get rid of him. It's lazy coaching and has been a problem here since Philbin got here.

Yet amazingly Philbin couldn't get Ireland to trade for Brandon Albert in 2013...go figure. He apparently has all this pull but couldn't swing the deal that was for the taking because of Jeff Ireland.

maybe they doctored that video in hard knocks where ireland says to joe in a meeting "the colts have inquired about vontae and i'm thinking about doing it"

even miami isnt so disfunctional where the gm has no say in who stays and who goes

Ireland trades one of the ONLY draft picks he ever drafted worth a damn... All his own idea. Mmmmkay.

Did you listen to the interview? He actually touches on that. You'd have to be pretty naive to believe that that was the only conversation the two had about that... I thought Hard Knocks made it pretty clear that the coaching staff was at an impasse with Vontae because of his "pee break" and that's what framed the Vontae trade.

Jeff Ireland was working on that trade, likely on Philbin's word. But Ireland didn't complete the trade because he had a bug up his ass about the value of the pick. He let his ego get to him on that trade. But he was definitely actively working on that trade because it was a player the coach wanted.
