Omars OTA updates

So many oddballs that I have to wonder just how much is smoke.

I am, though, really interested at the prospect of Martin playing ILB. As an OLB, he's a very good athlete with good size, as a 3-4 ILB, he's a great athlete with superior size. But, again, could be smoke. I mean, do they really have Wake playing SOLB and Taylor playing WOLB? Unless they plan on starting Wake at SOLB, I don't get it. But, Roth was working with the D-line . . . after losing weight to improve his quickness . . . *cough* Smoke.

Couple things that I thought were interesting:

Wilford is working strictly TE thus far. Turner is running with the 2nd team and Davis is the Nickel CB.

Frye is again the starting RG.

orion Martin is working inside LB.

I noticed Turner was working with the 2nd sting offense in the video of OTA #2. Hopefully, he turns into the red zone threat we have been lacking.

I do not think this is just smoke. I predicted a while ago that Orion Martin would be one of the two UDFAs to make this team and now they're giving him the opportunity to prove his versatility. That can only be a good thing. If he proves himself versatile enough to play OLB, ILB and be a Special Teams guy...he will have nailed a roster spot.

Frank Beamer can't say enough about what his leadership meant to the team his senior year when he was voted captain and was All ACC. He was a walk-on transfer from Norfolk State, and immediately started winning all kinds of team awards for hard work, practice habits, off field stuff, etc.

He set the DE position record back in 2005 for the fastest 40 time with a 4.52. I don't know how much he weighed back then but if he's moving to ILB they could scale him back from the 260+ pounds that he is to a more trim 250 pounds, and perhaps he will go from a 4.70 guy (his time at the VT Pro Day) to a 4.60 guy. He has it in him to get faster, because he was faster before.

As a Defensive End he was a tremendous run stopper that was very competent but not explosive as a pass rusher. Also he was asked to frequently peel off and cover running backs in pass pro, and supposedly only 19% of the passes that went into his area ever got completed. As far as his being a run stopper goes, on run plays the tailback only gained something ridiculous like 1.5 yards every time he was tackled by Orion Martin.

You take that skill set, great run stopper with good pass pro instincts, the ability to get smaller and faster, and I think you have a good formula for a guy moving to 3-4 ILB.

I hope you're right. We could definitely use the depth at ILB, and he sounds like he'd be a better run stopper at the position than Ayodele. This is all terribly speculative, but it doesn't sound unreasonable to view him as a potential starter at the position next season - based on his skill set. It'll depend upon how well he takes to the position.

I know he was a tremendous leader and a hard worker and he made plays against the run and in pass protection, and showed ability to rush the passer. What I don't know is if he has the side-to-side agility to play ILB or the speed to play zone coverage far up the field without looking stupid.

He's a rookie. I'll only go as far as predicting he'll make the team. And a big part of that reason is because he was a standout special teams tackler for Frank Beamer before ever he was a standout Defensive End.

IMO there are few ILB that can.

Rookie Brian Hartline makes his Dolphins OTA debut

Dolphins rookie receiver Brian Hartline, the Dolphins fourth-round pick out of Ohio State, made his OTA debut Thursday, and seemed to catch on rather quickly. "It's hard to play fast when you're still learning,'' said Hartline, who is also part of the punt returning unit. "First thing I do is learn the playbook.'' Hartline said he was able to find a loophole in the NCAA/NFL rule that prohibits rookies from attending organized practices until their college class graduates because his last course is an on-line class. "He can bring a lot to the table,'' said receiver Ted Ginn Jr., who was three years ahead of Hartline at Ohio State and in Ohio inner-city high schools where the two competed in track events. "He's got to listen to everybody, learn the system and once he gets the system down his athleticism will take over.''

DE Randy Starks returns to Miami Dolphins OTAs after arrest

Miami Dolphins defensive end Randy Starks was back at his normal spot bowling over offensive lineman in search of running backs at Thursday's organized training activity session. That's a lot better than knocking over a police officer with a giant Freightliner on Ocean Drive, which was detailed in an arrest report from an incident involving the veteran defensive end following his arrest last weekend on South Beach. Starks, who was charged with aggravated battery on a police officer and spent most of Sunday in jail, turned down all interviews as he came off the field. Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said the team and league are investigating the matter before both make decisions on Starks' future.
