San Diego shake-up could be coming

Posted by Mike Florio on October 8, 2009 7:26 AM ET
The recent comments from Chargers G.M. A.J. Smith regarding the performance of the team he built weren't merely idle chatter.

Smith and the coaching staff apparently are serious about taking action on the fly to fix the problems that have plagued the team.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Smith is "spending time on the phone" with other teams, possibly in the hopes of swinging one or more trades before the October 20 deadline. (And given linebacker Shawne Merriman's comments from Wednesday, his contract status, and the general vibrations coming from the organization suggesting that he won't be part of the team's future, Merriman possibly could be on the block.)

The Union-Tribune also reports that there's a feeling within the locker room that defensive jobs are "up for grabs." Defensive coordinator Ron Rivera reportedly sent that message to his troops earlier this week.

"I think it was the best thing for our defense," cornerback Quentin Jammer told the Union-Tribune. "You get your [rear end] run through like that, it puts everything in perspective, and I think we'll be better for it. There is going to be changes. You change the way you approach things, change the way you do things. I think it was the best wake-up call for us."

It remains to be seen whether the changes result in any changes in the on-field product when the Chargers return to action on October 19, with a Monday night visit from the Broncos.

I just came across this on Profootball.com under their 'rumors' page. Just curious to get other people's thoughts on this. IF Merriman is on the block what are your thoughts about it? I understand the rift between he and Jason but if there is a chance to get a player the caliber of a Ware would BP jump on that?

I know Merrriman is hurt and is not 100%.. Think it's his groin that's bothering him.

But imagine a 100% healthy Merriman with Porter, Wake and Taylor as your OLB rotation.

You can design a lot of blitz packages with that foursome on your roster. But I would have to think BP would look for any good ILB who is on the block.

I don't know about Merriman but I would sure as heck be looking at the rules about trading a player on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list. If we could trade them Matt Roth prior to the October 20th trade deadline, I would be all about it.

Let's face it, they need to stop the run. Matt Roth is a run stopper. Miami has been stopping the run excellently (2nd or 3rd best in the league, matter of fact). Roth isn't going to give us anymore pass rush, which is what we've lacked at times. The guy hasn't been here and yet we've rolled right on. That's the definition of a luxury item.

If we could get a draft pick for Roth, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Or the definition of average to begin w.?

Would be awesome to pull it off and get a draft pick -- 100 percent agree.

I'd be happy if the Dolphins sign Merriman. He can't be any more obnoxious than Crowder. And if he moved to Miami, maybe we can get him to strangle the Kardashians this time!

We don't really have anyone to trade for Merriman, unless we package some draft picks.
