One Fan's Question: ESPN's John Clayton's Response RE: Dolphins/Draft

It is when you take into consideration he has had one good game in his career up to this point. Obviously Philbin had input on his worth and said he didn't dictate that sort of value. As as far as not much of an improvement over what is currently here I would agree which is why I said overpaid.
Ten million dollars guaranteed is way too much for Matt Flynn.
I agree, and that was my point. They had a hell of an insight in Philbin. It had nothing to do with money though. Flynn was going to be a starter somewhere, regardless of money. If Philbin thought he was a starter, he would be here and we would have paid (assuming Ireland isn't a jackass, which is assuming a lot). The decision had far less to do with money and far more to do with his ability. You can't, in anyway, overpay for a franchise QB. Clearly Philbin didn't think he qualified as one.

We should be thankful it had less to do with money than ability (again, giving them the benefit of the doubt in assuming such). Going cheap on the most important position in football is flat out stupid.

Wrong. Matt Flynn is NOT the answer to any QB question.
The QB mistakes he alludes to were made by Wannstadt (Brees) and Saban (Rodgers).

The Dolphins have probably made more mistakes at the quarterback position than any other franchise since Dan Marino's retirement. They've wasted five No. 2 draft choices either drafting quarterbacks or trading for them.

Also refers to Ireland's drafting of Henne and White.

No way i would move up to take tannenhill but i would take him at 8

I disagree with making bad football moves just to make the fans happier. We'll see what Flynn becomes, but 8 million? Come on man.

I'm not 100% convinced that Flynn would have been the answer either, but we did turn around and pay Paul Soliai, a nose tackle, $6 million/year, after a down year.

If philbin did not believe Flynn could be a starter he would never have invited him to Miami. It all came down to his affordability against current QBs and who we could get in the draft. There is merit to this as our 2 current QBs are in their last years and have not been extended. I am sure Flynn was offered a 3 or 4 year contract making more then what we got at QB.

I would say that the Fins passed on Flynn for a reason..

And if they pass on Tannehill there will be a reason as well. If they pass on him his old coach must not have been sold that he's the guy to build around.

his college coach that said during the 2011 season that tannehill is a 10 year starting qb in the pros??? something tells me shermans on the tannehill train...

Then that's assuming they just went cheap with the most important position in football, which is flat out retarded. If Philbin felt he could have been a true starter (not another backup amongst backups "competing" for the starting job, which is pathetic), then they should have paid him. If Philbin felt he was a legit starter and Ireland just went cheap, it confirms Ireland is a horrible GM. I'd rather give them the benefit of the doubt and say it was due to ability (or lack thereof), because if it was solely to be cheap, they need to be run the town.

Really it started before Marino's retirement. We should have had someone in waiting, Jimmy Johnson should have drafted someone in 97 or 98 to groom behind Marino as it is Jimmy and Wannstedt never drafted a QB.
This is the pure truth. Where the writer is correct is that we better get someone in for next year now with our two guys on one year contracts. Problem for me is I have no idea if Tannehill is a good choice. I hope someone knows.

Pete Carroll just announced that there will be a legitimate competition between Flynn and Tavaris per PFT; more than that the rumors of them pursuing Tannehill have not died down. Anyone who doesn't believe Flynn would be here if Philbin wanted him and felt he needed him to launch his HC career IMO has another, more subjectiv agenda going on. It's more likely that Philbin, in consideration of their years together threw Flynn a bone by having him come out and extend courtesy him a courtesy offer as post purchase reinforcement for Seattle so he didn't appear to them as pathetically unwanted as he apparently was in a QB hungry year. This was a 7th round pick with 1 game better most everyone and actually 1 game worse than one of early Moore's, who couldn't even beat out JaMarcus Russell in college and along with Rohan Davey, we know how he panned out in the pros. :idk:

So please, there are plenty of reasons to legitimately hate on Ireland and the Fins if that's the way you're hard wired, but you're deluding yourself if you believe this is one of 'em!

Clayton GETS IT that with no QB under contract after this year, drafting Tannehill or Weeden is a MUST!

What if Moore or Garrard perform well, could we not resign one or both, especially with projected 60 mil in cap?

I don't understand why more people don't get this ^ perspective. If Philbin thought he was even remotely close to a franchise QB he would be a Dolphin right now. Just as people will bash the FO if they pass on Tannehill or if someone trades up, if M.Sherman is telling everyone he's the real deal we will trade up and secure him.

I have a funny feeling the only QB we will be drafting will be a mid to late round guy. They can give M.Moore the year to thrive or dive, if he thrives then we can sign him again to a decent 2/3 year deal, if he dive's we will be in decent position for Barkley or some other top QB coming out 2013. And that's fine by me!
