I agree, and that was my point. They had a hell of an insight in Philbin. It had nothing to do with money though. Flynn was going to be a starter somewhere, regardless of money. If Philbin thought he was a starter, he would be here and we would have paid (assuming Ireland isn't a jackass, which is assuming a lot). The decision had far less to do with money and far more to do with his ability. You can't, in anyway, overpay for a franchise QB. Clearly Philbin didn't think he qualified as one.

We should be thankful it had less to do with money than ability (again, giving them the benefit of the doubt in assuming such). Going cheap on the most important position in football is flat out stupid.

Why does Seattle consider trading up for tannehill and this is an "open" competition? I don't see a "open" competition in Denver...get your head out your arses and face the fact that he is NOT a franchise qb...

Just wanted to point out again that I never said money wasn't a factor at all, just that it was (hopefully) far less of a factor than ability. If money was the bigger issue, it would explain the last decade of **** football pretty well.

An issue with this post is that you're basing your "factual" opinion on skepticism. You don't believe what Pete Carrol says, while I think it's beyond silly to bring in a guy like Flynn when the rest of the media are speculating that he's a franchise guy. You don't bring in a franchise guy and openly say "Hey guys, this is seriously an open competition. Anyone can be our starter this season"

If Flynn starts all 16 games this season, he's getting about 13 million dollars for his first 2 seasons there. That's starter money.

Jackson is and always will be a backup/transitional starter. He's Frerotte, etc. You know what you have in him. Flynn still has some untapped potential. He'll be starting in order to (in my best FHer's tone) "see what he's got."

He would rather double up on the position then sit on his hands(unlike Miami). With the trade of Charlie Whitehurst and then the signing on Jackson the following year, Seattle has shown they are not afraid to be aggresive when trying to lock down the QB position.

But why 11? Because teams around the league know how much Seattle loves Tannehill. And you can write this down: If Tannehill were to be there at 12, Seattle would take him, even though the Seahawks just paid medium dollar for Matt Flynn in free agency. That's how much Seattle loves him. "At Tannehill's workout,'' one source told me, "[coach] Pete Carroll was giggling like a schoolgirl watching him throw. His attitude was like, 'What are we even doing here? He'll never be there for us.' ''

Because there is a really good chance that this was just spin to cover up getting outbid because they mismanaged the cap...

Ireland has ABSOLUTELY put HIMSELF in the position where there is NO option to pass on Tannehill... He ran the length of Henne's contract... He had the owner (thankfully) nix his deal for Orton... Manning and Flynn slipped away and now he has TWO (one who was not even in the league last year) 'backups' EACH ON ONE YEAR contracts!!!! I don't know how he could better demonstrate his complete lack of foresight or how little he thinks of the position then where we sit RIGHT NOW.

And I still bet that Ireland is secretly hoping Tannehill comes off the board before 8 so he doesn't have to make any kind of bold move and can further lay blame on another team... If Tannehill succeeds he can say 'Hey I wanted him but he was off the board' and if he blows 'See? I told ya'... This guy is the ultimate arm's length GM...

But if Tannehill is there at 8? HE HAS NO CHOICE and it is his own fault.

Because a 3 year deal worth 26 million is absolutely not a "investment". Tim Tebow and Kyle Orton are both making around(or over) 5 million this season, both are penciled in as backups. 6-7 million just isnt that big of a deal when it comes to potential starting quarterbacks. The deal Flynn signed was half of what Matt Cassel signed when he went to KC. It was simply a good deal for Seattle.

Plus Pete Carrol has yet to have a winning season up there. A large part of that is because he doesnt have a quarterback. He seems to get that it is of the upmost importance. If you end up with 2 starting quarterbacks, all the better. If you feel like a prospect can be a franchise quarterback, you pull the trigger, no matter who else is on your roster. Its not like the Eagles havent shown just how many draft picks you can get for potential starters.

Clayton is right about the draft. Miami needs a started under contract for next year and the only 2 guys worth drafting are Tannehill and Weeden. If they pass on Tannehill they will certainly have to trade up for Weeden. If they miss both of those guys, Miami is screwed in 2013.

He's wrong about Flynn though. In my opinion, Matt Moore is as capable of a QB as Flynn is and costs a fraction of the price. I don't think anyone can say for certain that Flynn is a better QB than Moore. Flynn's edge is he already knows the offense. I'd be extremely unhappy with Ireland if he spent 6 million a year on a back up QB.

that might be a workable theory except they had plenty of cap room at that point. in fact, they have signed 10+ players since then for much more than the difference between our offer and Seattle's.
also, the Dolphins as of a couple weeks ago were about 15th in cap space and are estimated to be $50+ million under the cap next year
