As Chris Mortensen noted just a few minutes ago, Miami is one of three teams in trouble in this draft because of only having 5 picks, not one from #2 until the 3rd round and a ton of needs.

Sorry to bring him up, but this just burns me up! :fire:

Consider: We finished at 4-12 and we now have Only 5 picks. Compare that to the Eagles who last year scored one of the two best WR's in the NFL and made it to the Super Bowl. How many draft picks do they have? 13!!!

You don't give up draft picks. Saban has to think seriously about letting Spielman go after the draft - not b/c he's mad at him, but you have to question Spielman's judgment. Trading away our 2nd rounder. Then, after getting a 3rd round pick from the Bears, he trades our 3rd round pick. And, the 2nd rounder was for a 3rd string QB who wasn't going to play a down; the 3rd rounder was for a 3rd string RB who had never shown true ability to excell as a starter.

I know we an rehash all that - and I'm not trying to, but I think that this draft situation shows how bad a position WannSpiel have put us in.

I'm glad we have Saban - he's a breath of fresh air - especially with his recognition that accumulating draft picks are critical to building a strong team.

what is philly gona do when terrible owens holds out? mcnabb will go back to sucking it up

speilman is now here just to evaluate talent he wont be making any picks/trades.

I doubt Saban is going to fire Spielman just to make you feel better

I don't think it is entirely clear that those trades were all Rick's idea. He was the GM, but he still reported to somebody. That somebody was ultimately the same person who decided it was a good idea to let Wanny have a last ditch effort to deliver. I think you can argue those trades were heavily encouraged and that without them, we could *still* be living with Wanny today.

Wanny was fired a year too late.We threw away picks in a desperate effort to save WannySpeil jobs. They were not concerned about our future. Now we are paying the piper.

There is no need to fire Spielman as long as he does the job that Saban wants....which is to scout talent and compile reports. Spielman no longer has the power to trade away picks, so why get rid of him?

I have to agree. If this draft goes well, this could be the start of a great working relationship until Rick decides to move up to become a real GM again. If it is shown he has any talent for the job, that will eventually happen. There aren't enough legitimate GMs in this league...

One of the reasons Wannstedt stayed around was because he pretty much put a "win now" team out there. He was willing to trade draft picks for players who would "apparently" make an impact straight away.

Because of this, people praised his overall record in Miami. "Oh, he still has the 7th best record in the last 4 years of all NFL teams". But Dave was not constructive. This showed when he finally resigned, giving us 5 draft picks and a defense so over-ripe in age, they could sign on as the endorsers of Cialis Sport.

Whoever's decision it was to trade away all those picks for mediocre players should be fired.

Oh wait...

Slight change. You don't give up draft picks unless your in a position to.

That was Wanny/Spielman's big downfall. They kept thinking that this team was only 'such and such' away.
