All of you have heard the rumors about the trade involving the dolphins and cowboys. This trade isnt close to happening. Correct me if im wrong but you cant trade a player that's not under contract. Barber is an RFA and can not be traded until signed by the cowboys.

they can trade the rights to marion barber if he is a restricted free agent. the dolphins would have to renegotiate with Barber. They would get compenstation if he signed with another team. it is like Wes Welker last year. He was a RFA and New England signed him and had to give us their 2nd and 7th as compensation. Is that correct?

im reading right now the cowboys put a tender for barber forcing any other team to give them their first and third rounder to grab him .

Well Dallas holds his rights as he will play for them under the tender offer if noone else signs him. While I'm not positive on the legality here, the way a situation like this normally works is we would need to negotiate a contract with Barber. Once terms are agreed upon, we would have to work out compensation w/ the Cowboys. Since there are other picks/ players potentially involved, we would probably get a ballpark of what he's looking for from his agent, then work out trade terms w/ Dallas, then finalize terms w/ Barber, then complete the trade. His status as a RFA complicates things a bit, but doesn't make it impossible. Of course, I still think a trade w/ Dallas is highly unlikely.

Which, correct me if I'm wrong, is the maximum that a team would receive for that player, theoretically, if a different proposal was presented & the team agreed, the trade could be made for less.

Yes, Dallas can agree to trade him for less or more than the required compensation for the tender, as we did with Welker. And the team acquiring the player still needs to have a contract in place for a trade to occur-- I'm not sure if that required, but it wouldn't make sense for any team to make a trade like that otherwise.

You can not trade a player that is not under contract. Welker was under contract last year when he was traded to the Patriots. He signed his one year offer by the Dolphins and was then traded. The following link is from peter king and explains it. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/peter_king/03/05/welker/index.html

Seeing as this would give the 'Pokes three #1's, I think this would increase the likelihood of Dallas wanting to move up, especially since McFadden would start looking really good in a backfield that's minus Barber. However, I don't see any team wanting Barber badly enough to forfeit a 1st and a 3rd.

One more little thing about the Barber trade:

It says that the Cowboys have a 1st round tenure on Barber and that they will try to reach a multi-year deal with him while trying to add another back. Darren McFadden, anyone? I guess this can somewhat solidify the rumors that talks between us and Dallas have been stimulated as a result of McFadden's 40-yard time. We might actually be looking at a trade, just not for Barber.
